This workshop highlighted its importance for the understanding of hadron properties, hadron matter and recent precise lattice and experimental results. Besides, heavy quark physics was also addressed.

Book excerpt: This proceedings volume collected papers presented at a recent symposium on Chiral Symmetry in Hadrons and Nuclei — the seventh in a series of international symposia — with an aim of providing a platform for discussions among the experts and an overview of the present status in the hadron and nuclear physics related to the chiral symmetry. The recent past years have seen a remarkable progress towards a unified description of nonperturbative strong interaction phenomena based on the fundamental theory of the strong interaction, Quantum ChromoDynamics, and Effective Field Theories. The topics discussed in these proceedings include: chiral and heavy-quark spin symmetry; chiral dynamics of few-body hadron systems; chiral symmetry and hadrons in a nuclear medium; chiral dynamics in nucleon-nucleon interaction and atomic nuclei; chiral symmetry in rotating nuclei; hadron structure and interactions; exotic hadrons, heavy flavor hadrons and nuclei; mesonic atoms and nuclei.

The series of this workshop has provided opportunities to discuss common interests of hadron and nuclear physics.Hadrons and nuclei show up different layers of phenomena governed by the same dynamics dictated by the fundamental law of the strong interaction, Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). The basic building blocks of matter, quarks and gluons, are confined in hadrons, generating their masses dynamically and breaking chiral symmetry spontaneously. The latter is the origin of the presence of the pion which governs the essential part of the nuclear interaction. Therefore, the common key words are chiral symmetry and pions. This volume contains reports of current achievements in hadron physics including exotic multiquark states, meson production reactions and non-linear dynamics of hadrons, and those in nuclear physics clustering phenomena, exotic neutron rich nuclei and the pions in nuclei. As related subjects, applications to astronuclear physics, including accelerator physics and laser physics are also discussed comprehensively.

Book excerpt: The main topic of the conference was the physics of strong interaction and the understanding of how quarks form hadrons, which are part of the atomic nucleus. The proceedings give a comprehensive overview of the present status of the physics of hadrons. Topics include: mesons, baryons, scalars, exotics, heavy quarks, theoretical concepts, hadrons in matter, and reactions. The timing of the conference was very fortunate as many new and surprising results appeared in the months before its start. The highlights were the discussions about the nature of the recently discovered arrow states.

Book excerpt: The International Conference "Bologna 2000: Structure of the Nucleus at the Dawn of the Century" was devoted to a discipline which has seen a strong revival of research activities in the last decade. New experimental results and theoretical developments in nuclear physics will certainly make important contributions to our knowledge and understanding of Nature's fundamental building blocks. The interest aroused by the Conference among the scientific community was clearly reflected in the large number of participants. These represented the most important nuclear physics laboratories in the world. The Conference covered five major topics of modern nuclear physics: nuclear structure, nucleus-nucleus collisions, hadron dynamics, nuclear astrophysics, and transdisciplinary and peaceful applications of nuclear science. It reviewed recent progress in the field and provided a forum for the discussion of current and future research projects.

Book excerpt: While perturbative QCD methods fully describe experimental results at high energies, and chiral perturbation theory is the low energy effective theory of the strong interactions, a form of duality is observed connecting these two regimes. In these intermediate kinematics, a wide variety of reactions are observed which can be described simultaneously by single particle (quark) scattering, and by exclusive resonance (hadron) scattering. The contributions in this proceedings volume discuss recent and existing results, and aim to foster current and future research, investigating the phenomenon of quark-hadron duality. This unique volume contains research work by scientists from different arenas of hadronic physics, dealing with different manifestations of quark-hadron duality. Sample Chapter(s). Chapter 1: Introductory Remarks on Duality in Lepton-Hadron Scattering (490 KB). Contents: Introduction and Review: Experimental and Theoretical Status: Duality in the Polarized Structure Functions (H P Blok); Spin Structure of the Nucleon and Aspects of Duality (Z E Meziani); Duality and Confinement: Quark Models of Duality in Electron and Neutrino Scattering (W Melnitchouk); Hadron Structure on the Back of an Envelope (A W Thomas et al.); Spin-Flavor Decomposition and in Polarized Semi-Inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering Experiments at Jefferson Lab (X Jiang); Duality in Photoproduction: Duality in Vector-Meson Production (A Donnachie); Onset of Scaling in Exclusive Processes (M Mirazita); Duality in Nuclei: A Partonic Picture of Jet Fragmentation in Nuclei (X-N Wang); Quark Gluon Plasma and Hadronic Gas on the Lattice (M P Lombardo); Duality in Neutrino Experiments: Neutrinos and Local Duality (F Steffens & K Tsushima); Duality and QCD: Higher Twist Effects in Polarized DIS (E Leader et al.); Highly Excited Hadrons in QCD and Beyond (M Shifman); Future Perspectives: Transverse Polarization and Quark-Hadron Duality (O V Teryaev); Research Perspectives with the Jefferson Lab (K de Jager); Perspectives with PANDA (P Gianotti); Summary Talk (P Hoyer); and other papers. This book was released on 1997-05-05 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of QCD in the confinement regime poses some of the most difficult problems of fundamental physics at present. The mechanism of confinement is not yet understood, and it is hard to investigate the properties of the fundamental theory in the determination of the structures and interactions of hadronic systems. As a consequence of these difficulties, the frontier between effective and fundamental theories has been intensively investigated in the last few years, and progress has been achieved in several directions. The 'Hadron Physics' workshop gathered together experts who have been taking the lead in these developments in recent years. Four sets of lectures were presented, providing a pedagogical and updated basis that gives support to research work in frontier problems. This book puts together the main current methods in the study of the properties of hadrons. The perspective of future developments based on different approaches can then be more clearly perceived.

Book excerpt: This volume discusses the exciting physics with new accelerator facilities, which are being constructed or proposed in various places. The facilities are RHIC (Brookhaven), CEBAF (TJINP), SPring-8 (Nishi-Harima), RIBF (RIKEN), JHP (KEK-INS), RIB (MSU), LISS (IUCF) and COSY (Juelich). RHIC aims at the creation of a QCD deconfinement phase and the study of the properties of such matter. CEBAF and SPring-8 use leptons to probe the quark-gluon structures of hadrons and nuclei. LISS and COSY use high resolution hadron beams to study hadron structures. JHP produces strong secondary hadron beams for hyper-nuclear physics and rare decay studies of basic symmetries. RIBF and RIB produce radioactive nuclear beams for the study of the nuclear structure of unstable nuclei far from beta stability, and astrophysics issues.
