Book Synopsis Labour Questions in the Global South by : Praveen Jha
Download or read book Labour Questions in the Global South written by Praveen Jha and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-02-24 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a focus on some of the main markers and challenges that are at the core of the study of structural transformations in contemporary capitalism and their implications for labour in the Global South. It examines the diverse perspectives and regional and social variations that characterise labour relations as a result of the uneven development which is an important facet of the intensification of capitalist accumulation.. The book provides important insights into the impact of the crises of capitalism on the wellbeing of labour at different historical junctures. Some of the issues covered by it include the conditions of work, and the changing composition of laboring classes and/or working people. The chapters also throw light on the multiple trajectories in the development of labour relations and employment in the Global South, especially after the ascendancy and domination of neoliberal finance capitalism. Some of the major aspects considered by the essays include the decentering of production and development of global value systems, crisis of social reproduction, and the rising informalisation of work.
Book Synopsis The Amsterdam International by : Geert Van Goethem
Download or read book The Amsterdam International written by Geert Van Goethem and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-28 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book charts the turbulent history of the International Federation of Trade Unions (IFTU) from its foundation in 1913, to its dissolution in 1945. Established to protect and advance the interests of workers of all countries and to further international solidarity, the IFTU from the outset was beset by difficulties. Within a year the First World War split the fledgling organisation, underlining national interests and creating resentment between some of the most powerful union interests. Although these differences were patched up after the end of hostilities, the Revolution in Russia and rise of Soviet Communism, with own aspirations to leadership of international labour, soon created new tensions within the IFTU.

Book Synopsis The Red International of Labour Unions (RILU) 1920 - 1937 by : Reiner Tosstorff
Download or read book The Red International of Labour Unions (RILU) 1920 - 1937 written by Reiner Tosstorff and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-09-07 with total page 936 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 'Red International of Labour Unions' (RILU, Russian abbreviation Profintern) was a central instrument for the spreading of international communism during the inter-war period. This comprehensive and scholarly history of the organisation, based on extensive research in the former communist archives in Moscow and East Berlin, sheds significant light on the international trade union movement of the period. Tosstorff shows how the RILU began as a revolutionary alliance of syndicalists and communists in defiance of the social democratic International Federation of Trade Unions. His text presents a full account of the organisation’s main stages: the decline of the revolutionary wave after World War One, after which many syndicalists left, and others were integrated into the communist parties; the continuation of the RILU as an international communist apparatus; and its dissolution in 1936–7 as part of communism's popular front policy. First published in German as Profintern: Die Rote Gewerkschaftsinternationale 1920-1937 by Ferdinand Schöningh, Paderborn, in 2004.
Book Synopsis Liberal Workers of the World, Unite? by : Magaly Rodriguez Garcia
Download or read book Liberal Workers of the World, Unite? written by Magaly Rodriguez Garcia and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2010 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of international free trade union organisations during the first two decades of the Cold War is an important but often neglected aspect of the development of post-war labour and liberalism. In this path-breaking book, Rodríguez García fills this void in the historical literature by offering a comparative analysis of two cases, the European Regional Organisation (ERO) and the Inter-American Regional Workers' Organisation (ORIT), which were created in the early 1950s as regional branches of the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions (ICFTU). The author employs the term 'labour liberalism' to describe their wide variety of functions. She argues that social democratic and reformist trade unions, which made up the bulk of ICFTU members, were fundamentally shaped by liberal values, even while calling for the active participation of organised labour in the planning and implementation of projects promoting liberal democracy and socio-economic development at home and abroad. By placing international free trade unionism centre stage, this book adds significantly to our understanding of post-war labour and liberalism.

Book Synopsis Workers' Movements and Strikes in the Twenty-First Century by : Jörg Nowak
Download or read book Workers' Movements and Strikes in the Twenty-First Century written by Jörg Nowak and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2018-04-05 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While workers movements have been largely phased out and considered out-dated in most parts of the world during the 1990s, the 21st century has seen a surge in new and unprecedented forms of strikes and workers organisations. The collection of essays in this book, spanning countries across global South and North, provides an account of strikes and working class resistance in the 21st century. Through original case studies, the book looks at the various shades of workers’ movements, analysing different forms of popular organisation as responses to new social and economic conditions, such as restructuring of work and new areas of investment.

Book Synopsis The Internationalisation of the Labour Question by : Stefano Bellucci
Download or read book The Internationalisation of the Labour Question written by Stefano Bellucci and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-11-26 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited collection is a global history of workers’ organisations since 1919, the year when the International Labour Organisation (ILO), the Comintern and the International Federation of Trade Unions were formed. This historical moment represents a caesura in labour history as it epitomises the beginning of what the editors and the contributors in this book call the internationalisation of the labour question. The case studies in this centenary volume analyse the relationship between global workers’ organisations and the new ideological confrontation between liberal capitalism, socialism and communism since the Bolshevik Revolution in Russia. Workers’ organisations, trade unions in particular, grew in importance and managed to organise internationally, forming alliances cemented by ideology and sustained by international institutional bodies or centrals. In the nascent capitalist versus communist struggle, trade unions thrived. Is it mere coincidence that today’s decline of unionism coincides with the end of ideological antagonism? This book emphasises important global labour issues such as gender as well as international workers’ histories from Latin America, Asia and Africa.
