Download or read book Policing International Trade in Endangered Species written by Rosalind Reeve and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-02-25 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive examination of the way in which the Convention on the International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) is implemented and policed. CITES is one of the oldest international environmental agreements and has been responsible for some striking conservation successes. But, given the way it has evolved, there are also some critical weaknesses that unscrupulous countries and commercial interests can exploit, especially regarding information, institutions and enforcement. The convention needs reform and this book gives a trenchant critique, including practical and effective recommendations for change.

Book Synopsis Endangered Species Threatened Convention by : Barnabas Dickson
Download or read book Endangered Species Threatened Convention written by Barnabas Dickson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-05 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) is the best known and most controversial of international conservation treaties. Since it came into force 25 years ago, debate has raged over its most basic assumptions. CITES treats the international trade in wildlife as the most important threat to the continued existence of wild species. It offers a prescription of trade bans and restrictions for endangered species. However, it is now generally acknowledged that for most species habitat loss is a much more significant threat. Some argue that the CITES remedy actually exacerbates the problem by removing the incentive to conserve wildlife habitat. This collection of essays, the first of its kind, charts the controversies and changes within CITES. It provides case studies of the way CITES has dealt with particular species and notes the growing role of the South in shaping the direction of the treaty. It considers the role of sustainable use, the precautionary principle and unilateralism within CITES. Finally, it examines options for the future of CITES. Implicit within a number of the contributions is the recognition that questions of wildlife conservation cannot be divorced from wider issues of land use, development and social justice. This book provides an essential resource for policy makers, practitioners, academics and students concerned with conservation, development and trade.
Book Synopsis The Illegal Wildlife Trade by : Daan P. van Uhm
Download or read book The Illegal Wildlife Trade written by Daan P. van Uhm and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-11-15 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book the author examines the illegal wildlife trade from multiple perspectives: the historical context, the impact on the environment, the scope of the problem internationally, the sociocultural demand for illegal products, the legal efforts to combat it, and several case studies from inside the trade. The illegal wildlife trade has become a global criminal enterprise, following in the footsteps of drugs and weapons. Beyond the environmental impact, financial profits from the illegal wildlife trade often fund organized crime groups and violent gangs that threaten public safety and security in myriad ways. This innovative volume covers several key questions surrounding the wildlife trade: why is there a demand for illegal wildlife products, which actors are involved in the trade, how is the business organized, and what are the harmful consequences. The author performed ethnographic fieldwork in three key markets: Russia, Morocco, and China, and has constructed a detailed picture of how the wildlife trade operates in these areas. Conversations with informants directly involved in the illegal business ensure unique insights into this lively black market. In the course of his journey the author follows the route of the illegal wildlife trade from poor poaching areas to rich business districts where corrupt officials, legally registered companies, wildlife farms and sophisticated criminal organizations all have a share. A fascinating look inside the world of poachers, smugglers and traders.
Book Synopsis International Trade in Endangered Species by : David S. Favre

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Investors' Environmental Guidelines will be useful to all those associated with the process of investment in Central & Eastern Europe. The Guidelines have been designed for rapid use by the investor who knows very little about the environment, as well as for the environmental specialist working in the corporate environment unit. The Guidelines , in particular the sections covering liability & regulatory compliance, will also be of particular interest to lawyers. The Guidelines give a unique & up-to-date coverage of environmental legislation which will be of far wider interest to policy makers, consultants, NGOs & others, both from within the region & from western countries. In particular, they will be able to compare how investor-related environmental requirements are handled in other countries in the region. Book Synopsis The Crimes of Wildlife Trafficking by : Ragnhild Aslaug Sollund
Download or read book The Crimes of Wildlife Trafficking written by Ragnhild Aslaug Sollund and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-01-22 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines trade and trafficking in endangered animal species and how the trade increasingly puts large numbers of nonhuman species at risk. Focusing on illegal trafficking, the book also discusses the harmful aspects of the trade and trafficking which is taking place in concordance with laws and regulations. Drawing on the findings of empirical research from Norway and Colombia, the study discusses how this global, transnational trend is addressed, and features of the trade and the ways in which it is controlled in the two case study locations. It also explores the motives driving the trade, and the consequences in terms of animal abuse and environmental harm. The book discusses whether internationally agreed measures, such as international conventions, actually help prevent the trade. Possible ways to address the harms of wildlife trade are considered, including a total ban. The work draws on a green criminology and eco feminist theoretical framework to provide a broad perspective on concepts such as harm, animal rights, species justice and speciesism.

Book Synopsis Animal Traffic by : Rosemary-Claire Collard
Download or read book Animal Traffic written by Rosemary-Claire Collard and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2020-08-24 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Parrots and snakes, wild cats and monkeys---exotic pets can now be found everywhere from skyscraper apartments and fenced suburban backyards to roadside petting zoos. In Animal Traffic Rosemary-Claire Collard investigates the multibillion-dollar global exotic pet trade and the largely hidden processes through which exotic pets are produced and traded as lively capital. Tracking the capture of animals in biosphere reserves in Mexico, Guatemala, and Belize; their exchange at exotic animal auctions in the United States; and the attempted rehabilitation of former exotic pets at a wildlife center in Guatemala, Collard shows how exotic pets are fetishized both as commodities and as objects. Their capture and sale sever their ties to complex socio-ecological networks in ways that make them appear as if they do not have lives of their own. Collard demonstrates that the enclosure of animals in the exotic pet trade is part of a bioeconomic trend in which life is increasingly commodified and objectified under capitalism. Ultimately, she calls for a “wild life” politics in which animals are no longer enclosed, retain their autonomy, and can live for the sake of themselves.

Book Synopsis The Trade in Wildlife by : Sara Oldfield
Download or read book The Trade in Wildlife written by Sara Oldfield and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-10-14 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'A valuable addition to the wildlife conservation and management literature.' Journal of International Wildlife Law and Policy 'This book provides the reader with a fascinating set of debates about the ethical, biological and socio-economic issues that arise in attempting to regulate the wildlife trade.' Development and Change The regulation of the trade in wildlife is failing. From the snow leopard of India to the monkey puzzle tree of South America, increasing numbers of plant and animal species are threatened with extinction despite improvements both in our understanding of the issues involved and in the management of global trade. Insight into why this is taking place, and how to halt it, is urgently needed. The Trade in Wildlife provides a timely and broad-based critical assessment of how the international trade in wildlife is currently regulated and how those regulations are enforced, or, all too often, ignored. Through analysis of key case studies and a comparative look at the trade in other illegal goods, it highlights the weakness in the current system, shows where it is failing and clearly outlines what must be done if conservation efforts are to be supported by trade regulations rather than undermined by them. This is a comprehensive resource for academics and students in economics, environmental studies, law and politics and a critical text for conservationists, policy-makers and NGOs.
Download or read book The Photo Ark written by Joel Sartore and published by National Geographic Books. This book was released on 2017 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book of photography represents National Geographic's Photo Ark, a major cross-platform initiative and lifelong project by photographer Joel Sartore to make portraits of the world's animals -- especially those that are endangered. His message: to know these animals is to save them. Sartore intends to photograph every animal in captivity in the world. He is circling the globe, visiting zoos and wildlife rescue centers to create studio portraits of 12,000 species, with an emphasis on those facing extinction. He has photographed more than 6,000 already and now, thanks to a multi-year partnership with National Geographic, he may reach his goal. This book showcases his animal portraits: from tiny to mammoth, from the Florida grasshopper sparrow to the greater one-horned rhinoceros. Paired with the prose of veteran wildlife writer Douglas Chadwick, this book presents an argument for saving all the species of our planet.
