Book Synopsis Public-private Relationships In Trade Policy-making by : Hyun-jung Jessie Je
Download or read book Public-private Relationships In Trade Policy-making written by Hyun-jung Jessie Je and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2018-06-12 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an ever more globalized and pluralized world, more attention is paid to engaging private parties in the process of trade policy-making, as non-state actors are often directly affected by trade policy shaped by governments. However, despite growing interest in this issue, there has been a relative lack of academic research on public-private relationships in trade policy-making under any kind of framework. The book, Public-Private Relationships in Trade Policy-making, proposes an analytical framework to examine various levels of public engagement, both in the international and national arena. By analyzing the WTO at the international level, and the US, EU, and Korea at the national level based on the author's proposed framework, this book goes beyond a mere descriptive approach to public engagement in trade policy-making to offer meaningful implications for policymakers in developing countries, which are increasingly acknowledging the importance of public-private relationships in the field of trade.

This edited volume critically examines the relationship between corporations and the US state in the development of foreign policies related to globalization. Drawing together a wide range of contributors, this work explores the role of corporations in using US foreign policies to advance the interests of transnational capital in a wide range of contexts, including: how US government policies have contributed to the globalization of production and finance the ways in which transnational corporations have influenced the US relationship with China, a crucial linkage in the new era of transnational accumulation how transnational corporate power has shaped capital-labour relations, humanitarian intervention, structural adjustment policies, low-intensity democracy and the G20 summits the "corporate centrism" of the Obama Administration, whose policies have been consistent with the growing power of transnational capital in US foreign policymaking the politics and consequences of the embedded relationship between various sectors of the transnational capitalist class, global institutions and the US state, including the limits and contradictions of this relationship during the ongoing capitalist crisis. This work will be of great interest to students and scholars of both US foreign policy and international political economy.
Book Synopsis The WTO, the Internet and Trade in Digital Products by : Sacha Wunsch-Vincent
Download or read book The WTO, the Internet and Trade in Digital Products written by Sacha Wunsch-Vincent and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2006-01-20 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rapid development of the Internet has led to a growing potential for electronic trade in digital content like movies, music and software. As a result, there is a need for a global trade framework applicable to such digitally-delivered content products. Yet, digital trade is currently not explicitly recognised by the trade rules and obligations of the World Trade Organization (WTO). This study provides a complete analysis of the related challenges in the ongoing WTO Doha Negotiations to remedy this state of affairs. It elaborates on the required measures in the multilateral negotiations to achieve market access for digital content and examines the obstacles that lie on the path to reach consensus between the United States and the European Communities. Negotiation parameters analysed include the current US and EC regulatory approach to audiovisual and information society services and the evolution of their applicable trade policy jurisdiction. Finally, this examination takes stock of how the Doha Negotiations and parallel US-driven preferential trade agreement have so far contributed to securing free trade in digital content. As new technologies are an increasingly prominent source of trade dispute, this book is an assessment of how WTO Members can maintain the relevance of the multilateral trade framework in a changing technological and economic environment. "This important work highlights the missed opportunity in on-going global trade talks -- the failure to pursue a free trade framework for digitally delivered content. If not corrected, one can readily imagine the rise of discriminatory barriers to digital trade of the type that have dogged global trade flows for years, and a failed recognition by the WTO of the reality of modern commerce. The WTO should, as the author argues, put a "spotlight" on electronic trade, and move forward in a comprehensive fashion." Ambassador Charlene Barshefsky, Former United States Trade Representative "Wunsch-Vincent provides a comprehensive analysis of the challenges to establish a liberal trade regime for trade in digital products. This book will become an important point-of-reference for anybody interested in e-commerce and the WTO." Carlos A. Primo Braga, Senior Adviser, International Trade Department, The World Bank

Download or read book Trading Down written by Peter Gibbon and published by Temple University Press. This book was released on 2005-05-16 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Africa's role in the global economy is evolving as a result of new corporate strategies, changing trade regulations, and innovative ways of overseeing the globalized production and distribution of goods both within Africa and internationally. African participants in the global economy, now faced with demands for higher levels of performance and quality, have generated occasional successes but also many failures. Peter Gibbon and Stefano Ponte describe the central processes that are integrating some African firms into the global economy while at the same time marginalizing others. They show the effects of these processes on African countries, and the farms and firms within them. The authors use an innovative combination of global value chain analysis—which links production, trade, and consumption—and convention theory, an approach to understanding the conduct of business. In doing so, Gibbon and Ponte present a timely overview of the economic challenges that lay ahead in Africa, and point to ways to best address them.
