This book was released on 2013-04-18 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transboundary animal diseases (TADs) are a major threat to livestock. They are highly contagious or transmissible, and they have the potential to cause high morbidity and mortality in both susceptible animal populations and humans. In addition, not only are TADs detrimental to national economies, they are also a serious threat to world food security. This volume presents the proceedings of an international workshop on Vaccines and Diagnostics for Transboundary Animal Diseases that was held in Ames (Iowa, USA) in 2012. Experts and scientists from academia, industry and government reviewed the current status of vaccines and diagnostics for high priority TADs, decision-making and regulatory processes for veterinary biologics, and the roles and responsibilities of government agencies. The discussions also addressed achievements and gaps in vaccine and diagnostics development for 11 important TADs as well as the translation of research findings into licensed novel vaccines and diagnostics for high-priority TADs.

Download or read book First International Conference on Rabies in Europe written by Betty Dodet and published by S. Karger AG (Switzerland). This book was released on 2006 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rabies is still one of the most feared diseases in the world and its control remains a key objective in large parts of Europe. This major meeting brought together veterinarians, scientists, clinicians and public health officials to share their experience in rabies control, to examine the threat posed by the common rabies virus and emerging strains, and to develop strategies for the prevention, control and eradication of rabies in Europe. Rabies in Europe reveals the true epidemiological situation of an often overlooked menace and presents the latest research by over 40 prominent scientists in rabies prevention and control. It proposes practical solutions and includes the official WHO/OIE recommendations issuing from the meeting. The book provides researchers, healthcare professionals and public health officials with an up-to-date, in-depth look at the threat still posed by rabies and shows how medical and scientific advances have been employed to stem the growing number of infections spreading from Eastern to Western Europe since the end of World War II.

Book Synopsis Advances in Transfusion Safety by : Albert Farrugia
Download or read book Advances in Transfusion Safety written by Albert Farrugia and published by S. Karger AG (Switzerland). This book was released on 2007 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Improving the safety for blood and blood product transfusion It is amazing that in the first years of the 21st century there are insufficient blood supplies and that some supplies are unsafe in certain areas of the world. Regulations and codes call for continuous improvement in processes and attitudes to assure safety everywhere. To that end nearly 200 transfusionists and their colleagues gathered in Sydney in October 2005 to conduct a marathon symposium on methods and advances made towards achieving universal safety for blood and blood product transfusion. Sponsors of the latest products joined in to support this extraordinary meeting of information and ideas. Advances in transfusion safety were put forward from all areas of the blood transfusion process, including establishment of services, donor selection, infections that may affect donors, safe testing, risk and safety assessment, the roles of government and regulation, the use of blood and its products as well as the need for effective communication. The resulting papers from internationally renowned experts are published in these proceedings.

The purpose of this conference was to review current data and progress in the field of cell substrates, discuss the continued use of existing tests and the appropriateness of new ones at this time, and develop consensus recommendations on how to address these issues, by either recommending implementation or identifying research gaps that preclude decision-making. Scientific topics covered oncogenicity of cellular components, both latent viruses and cellular DNA, viral adventitious agent test methods, level of assurance provided by the current tests, bovine (and porcine) viruses in (primarily) bovine-derived raw materials, and bovine spongiform encephalopathy agents as potential contaminants of cell substrates. Also presented were tests that ensure the safety and quality of novel vaccine cell substrates for investigational vaccine production. Academia, regulators, the vaccine industry and the testing industry developing, regulating or testing viral vaccines will greatly benefit from the wealth of new findings.
Book Synopsis State of the Art Analytical Methods for the Characterization of Biological Products and Assessment of Comparability by : Anthony R. Mire-Sluis
Download or read book State of the Art Analytical Methods for the Characterization of Biological Products and Assessment of Comparability written by Anthony R. Mire-Sluis and published by S. Karger AG (Switzerland). This book was released on 2005 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the latest advances in analytical technologies, most biological products can now be extensively characterized in terms of their identity, heterogeneity and impurity profile. The currently available analytical methods (both physicochemical and biological) can characterize the primary, secondary and to some extent, the higher order structure of proteins. The sensitivity and selectivity of these methods allow for the identification and characterization not only of the desired protein component, but also many product-related substances and impurities as well as process-related impurities present in the drug preparations. Using an appropriate selection of analytical tools, it may be possible to demonstrate physicochemical and functional comparability between protein products manufactured before and after a manufacturing change or during product development. However, the extent of demonstrable comparability depends on the tests used, on the nature of the product and on the basic understanding of structure-function relationships. Assessment of immunogenicity is also a critical component of product characterization and is highly dependent on the types of assays used.
