Book excerpt: Continuous Emission Monitoring, Second Edition is the most comprehensive source of information on the latest technical and regulatory issues that are affecting the design, application, and certification of CEM systems. It provides a thorough discussion of CEM systems, how they work, their advantages and drawbacks, and the regulatory requirements that govern their operation. Equally suitable for an environmental engineer in a plant or control agency, a CEM user, or an inspector/auditor, this book makes it possible to assess the operating characteristics of commercial systems and to evaluate them for a specific application. Thoroughly referenced, with numerous illustrations, it features: * A comprehensive review of regulations, with clear information on changes * New measurement techniques, designs for "smart" analyzers, and advanced monitoring approaches * New chapters on flow rate and continuous particulate monitors * Techniques for recordkeeping, generating reports, and using data acquisition and handling systems * Quality assurance/quality control programs CEMs are becoming a fact of life in regulatory programs throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, and Asia. Environmental professionals as well as vendors and manufacturers will turn to Continuous Emission Monitoring for clear, up-to-date information on the technical and regulatory issues shaping this dynamic field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neutrinos can arguably be labeled as the most fascinating elementary particles known as their small but non-zero rest mass points to new mass generating mechanisms beyond the Standard Model, and also assigns primordial neutrinos from the Big Bang a distinct role in shaping the evolution of large-scale structures in the universe. The open question of the absolute neutrino mass scale will be addressed by the Karlsruhe Tritium Neutrino (KATRIN) experiment, currently under construction. This thesis reports major contributions to developing and implementing new laser-spectroscopic precision tools to continuously monitor the isotope content of the windowless gaseous tritium source of KATRIN. The method of choice, Raman spectroscopy, is ideally suited for in-situ monitoring of all six hydrogen isotopologues. In a series of beautiful experiments the author obtained two independent novel calibration methods, first based on a comparison of experimental Raman depolarization ratios with corresponding quantum-chemical calculations, and second on a gas sampling technique. Both methods yield consistent cross-calibration results and, as well as yielding improvements in precision, will be of major importance in reducing systematic effects in long-term neutrino mass measurements. The methods developed in this thesis also have great potential to further broaden the applications of Raman spectroscopy to study extended sources such as in atmospheric physics.

Now a completely updated new edition has been published. It was prepared by a team of industrial textile specialists at Auburn University to provide both technical and management personnel with a comprehensive resource on the current technology and applications of today's industrial textiles. All aspects of industrial textiles are covered: man-made and natural materials, manufacturing and finishing methods, and all applications. There are also sections on properties, testing, waste management, computers and automation, and standards and regulations. The appendices provide extensive reference data: properties, specifications, manufacturers and trade names, mathematical equations and measurement units. The text is organized for easy reference, and well illustrated with hundreds of schematics and photographs.

The volume covers green chemical processing in the context of climate change. The impact of catalysis, remediation of pollutants, and sustainable practices in process development on climate change are themes addressed in this volume. We also explore the adoption of sustainability and environmental justice in educational curricula. The American Chemical Society’s 12 Principles of Green Chemistry are woven throughout this text as well as throughout the series to which this book belongs.
