Book excerpt: The United States has long recognized that the nation's prosperity and security depend on how we address challenges of disasters, poverty, famine, and disease around the world. The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) has played a vital role in promoting U.S. national and international interests by advancing strategies for employing science, technology, and innovation to respond to global challenges. The focus by USAID on science, technology, and innovation is critical to improve development outcomes. At the core of this progress is the engagement of science institutions and other innovative enterprises and their commitment to work in partnership with USAID to research, test, and scale solutions. The Role of Science, Technology, Innovation, and Partnerships in the Future of USAID provides an assessment and advice on the current and future role for science, technology, and innovation in assistance programs at USAID and on the role of partnerships in the public and private sectors to expand impact. This report examines challenges and opportunities for USAID in expanding the utilization of science, technology, and innovation in development assistance; assesses how USAID has deployed science, technology, and innovation; and recommends priority areas for improvement going forward in partnership with others.

Book Synopsis Examining Core Elements of International Research Collaboration by : Institute of Medicine
Download or read book Examining Core Elements of International Research Collaboration written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2011-09-29 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The globalization of science, engineering, and medical research is proceeding rapidly. The globalization of research has important implications for the U.S. research enterprise, for the U.S. government agencies, academic institutions, and companies that support and perform research, and for the world at large. As science and technology capabilities grow around the world, U.S.-based organizations are finding that international collaborations and partnerships provide unique opportunities to enhance research and training. At the same time, significant obstacles exist to smooth collaboration across national borders. Enhancing international collaboration requires recognition of differences in culture, legitimate national security needs, and critical needs in education and training. In response to these trends, the Government-University-Industry Research Roundtable (GUIRR) launched a Working Group on International Research Collaborations (I-Group) in 2008, following its meeting on New Partnerships on a Global Platform that June. As part of I-Group's continuing effort, a workshop on Examining Core Elements of International Research Collaboration was held July 26-27, 2010 in Washington, DC. One primary goal of the workshop is to better understand the risks involved in international research collaboration for organizations and individual participants, and the mechanisms that can be used to manage those risks. Issues to be addressed in the workshop include the following: (1) Cultural Differences and Nuances; (2) Legal Issues and Agreements; (3) Differences in Ethical Standards; (4) Research Integrity and the Responsible Conduct of Research; (5) Intellectual Property; (6) Risk Management; (7) Export Controls; and (8) Strategies for Developing Meaningful International Collaborations. The goal for the workshop and the summary, Examining Core Elements of International Research Collaboration, is to serve as an information resource for participants and others interested in international research collaborations. It will also aid I-Group in setting its future goals and priorities.

Book Synopsis Research Collaboration between Europe and Latin America by : Rigas Arvanitis
Download or read book Research Collaboration between Europe and Latin America written by Rigas Arvanitis and published by Archives contemporaines. This book was released on 2014-02-19 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International collaboration has become increasingly important in carrying out research activities. This book, written by a large group of scholars from Europe and Latin America, maps, analyses and discusses research collaboration between the two continents during the last twenty years. The empirical material underlines the richness and the variety of the links that bind the two continents, well beyond the simplified views of science, either as the brainchild of global networking or as a result of dependence. The book also develops an innovative methodological approach, combining bibliometric analysis, social surveying, in-depth interviews, and a careful analysis of research programmes and policies. While arguing that the asymmetry of relations that once existed in cooperation has turned into a more equal partnership between the two continents, it deciphers some of the reasons behind this more balanced cooperation. It also challenges the view of science as a global self-organising system through collective action at the level of researchers themselves. On the contrary, the importance of policy, institutions, and previously developed research is highlighted and recognised

Download or read book Emerging Frontiers in Industrial and Systems Engineering written by Harriet B. Nembhard and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-06-13 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Success is driven through collaboration. The field of Industrial and Systems Engineering has evolved as a major engineering field with interdisciplinary strength drawn from effective utilization, process improvement, optimization, design, and management of complex systems. It is a broad discipline that is important to nearly every attempt to solve problems facing the needs of society and the welfare of humanity. In order to carry this forward, successful collaborations are needed between industry, government, and academia. This book brings together an international group of distinguished practitioners and academics in manufacturing, healthcare, logistics, and energy sectors to examine what enables successful collaborations. The book is divided into two key parts: 1) partnerships, frameworks, and leadership; and 2) engineering applications and case studies. Part I highlights some of the ways partnerships emerge between those seeking to innovate and educate in industrial and systems engineering, some useful frameworks and methodologies, as well as some of the ideas and practices that undergird leadership in the profession. Part II provides case studies and applications to illustrate the power of the partnerships between academia and practice in industrial and systems engineering. Features Examines the success from multiple industries Provides frameworks for building teams and avoiding pitfalls Contains international perspectives of success Uses collaborative approaches from industry, government, and academia Includes real world case studies illustrating the enabling factors Offers engineering education and student-centric takeaways
