Book Synopsis British Emigration to Australia by : R.T. Appleyard
Download or read book British Emigration to Australia written by R.T. Appleyard and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1964-12-15 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each year nearly 30,000 Britons emigrate to Australia under the Assisted Passages Scheme. In return for near-free transport they are required only to stay a minimum of two years in Australia. Are these persons the ne'er-do-wells of British society, the unskilled misfits who have not been able to succeed in Britain? Do they base their decisions to emigrate on reliable information and study economic opportunities in other overseas countries before choosing Australia? To what extent do relatives and friends in Australia and the fact that it is a British country influence their decisions? Why do they leave their homeland – inequality of opportunity; a hostile class structure; the climate? What do they know about the country many of them will never leave and what do they hope to achieve by going there? In 1959 Dr Appleyard and a team of interviewers set out to find the answers to these questions. They conducted long interviews with nine hundred British families (and single persons) just before they sailed for Australia. This book contains the results of the interviews set in the background of post-war emigration to Australia, demographic and economic conditions in each country, government policies which have been formulated to meet these conditions, and actual differences in wage, social services, and the ownership of houses and consumer durables between the United Kingdom and Australia.

Download or read book Human Migration written by J. J. Mangalam and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2021-10-21 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this guide to the literature on human migration, J.J. Mangalam indexes over 2,000 titles that appeared in English from 1955 through 1962. An important feature of this work is the annotation of nearly 400 major articles on migration. These annotations provide information on the main focus of the study, the hypotheses tested, and any special measuring devices employed. The conclusions are also given, using the authors' words whenever possible. To facilitate the use of this guide the author has compiled an index that lists not only the subjects treated but also the major variables used in each abstracted study; thus the researcher who is interested in the use of certain variables can easily refer to the previous investigation of the influence of these factors upon migration. In a comprehensive introduction, Mangalam surveys the current state of studies of human migration and suggests a theoretical framework by which the vast amount of existing facts from different migration studies can be integrated and given meaning.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aging Process of Population investigates and analyzes the phenomenon of population aging. The text aims to provide a quantitative and qualitative analyses of structural transformations caused by the aging population on modern societies in various parts of the world. The book is organized into four parts. The first part deals with problems in methodologies, such as methods to measure demographic old age; hypothetical and perspective computation tools; and deficient methodological uniformity of source materials. The second part discusses the beginning of old age; analysis of life tables; and the method of computing the normal length of life. Population structure by age in different time periods; dynamics of the changes in the age composition of populations in seven select countries; and the problem of dependency of non-productive elements on the population of productive age are examined in Part III. The last part provides the effect of fertility, reduction of mortality, migration, and war in the determination of the age structure of populations. Demographers, sociologists, statisticians, economists, politicians, market researchers, ecologists, and students will find the book invaluable.
