Book Synopsis Energy Plant Species by : N. EL Bassam
Download or read book Energy Plant Species written by N. EL Bassam and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-31 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biomass currently accounts for about 15 per cent of the global primary energy consumption and is particularly important as an energy resource in developing countries. It will undoubtedly play an increasing role in the world's energy consumption. Which crops make up this large percentage of our energy resources? Where do they grow and what can be done to boost the levels of production? What impact does their cultivation have on the environment and development? The book starts with aspects of biomass accumulation, harvesting, transportation and storage, as well as conversion technologies for biofuels. This is followed by a look at the environmental impact and economic and social dimensions, including prospects for renewable energy. The book then goes on to cover all the main potential energy crops. For each main species it gives a brief description, outlines the ecological requirements, methods of propagation, crop management, rotation and production, harvesting, handling and storage, processing and utilization, then finishes with selected references. All those whose work involves biomass production, whether as agriculturalist, student, farmer, producer, planner or policy maker will find this book an invaluable reference work.
Download or read book Cotoneasters written by Jeanette Fryer and published by Timber Press. This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The genus Cotoneaster includes some of the world's most useful and beautiful hardy shrubs. They vary in size from compact groundcovers to large specimens; their foliage may be evergreen or deciduous, sometimes displaying outstanding fall color; and they frequently bear large crops of eye-catching fruits, which may be red, orange, yellow, pink, purple, or black. Often thought of as the workhorses of the garden, they possess many ornamental traits and are easy to cultivate, putting them on a par with garden aristocrats like viburnums and daphnes. Although the number of species and selections in cultivation is relatively small, that is bound to change as gardeners and nursery owners become better acquainted with the merits of these worthy plants. Cotoneasters is the definitive treatment on the genus and the culmination of 50 years of combined prodigious research. It is a monumental and comprehensive source of information on the classification, identification, cultivation, and nomenclature of nearly all the known species and cultivars.

Apart from fulfilling the need of this treatise for research teams and scientists actively working in the areas of plant physiology biochemistry and plant molecular biology in universities institutes and research laboratories throughout the world, it would be extremely a useful book and a voluminous reference material for acquiring advanced knowledge by students in response to innovative courses in Plant Physiology, Plant Biochemistry, Agronomy, Genetics and Plant Breeding, Genetic Engineering, Microbiology, Plant Biotechnology and Botany. Over eighteen (18) chapters of Vol. 1 extensively elucidate the needful topics of Biological Nitrogen Fixation, Plant Cell and Tissue Culture, Plant Metabolism , certain rare Techniques in Plant Physiology, Herbicides Physiology, Plant Growth Regulators, Physiology of Rooting, Tree Physiology, Stress Physiology (in part) and Growth and Development Hopefully, Vol. II will comprise other important topics.
Book Synopsis Nursery Manual for Native Plants by : R. Kasten Dumroese
Download or read book Nursery Manual for Native Plants written by R. Kasten Dumroese and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2001, the Forest Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), through its Virtual Center for Reforestation, Nurseries, and Genetics Resources (RNGR), invited Native Americans from across the United States to attend the Western Forest and Conservation Nursery Association annual meeting. About 25 tribal members, representing 20 tribes, attended the meeting at Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado. The following year, a similar meeting was held in Olympia, Washington, and tribal members initiated a Tribal Nursery Council and requested that RNGR facilitate the organization. During 2003, RNGR requested information from 560 tribes across the United States, seeking specific information on tribes' needs for native plants, facilities, training, and so on. Results from the responding 77 tribes were incorporated into the Tribal Nursery Needs Assessment. Based on the results of that questionnaire, and input from tribal members attending the 2003 Intertribal Nursery Council meeting in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, it was agreed that a nursery handbook was needed. That fall, planning began for writing the manual, loosely based on Agriculture Handbook 674, The Container Tree Nursery Manual, but with special attention to the uniqueness of Native American cultures.

Download or read book Australian Seeds written by Luke Sweedman and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2006-09-05 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first complete guide to the collection, processing and storage of wild collected seed. While the main focus is on Australian seeds, the procedures and protocols described within the book are of international standard and apply to users throughout the world. The book provides a basic understanding to seed biology, evolution and morphology, and includes chapters on all aspects of harvesting, processing and storage of seeds. This will enable users to collect, process and store seed more efficiently, thus reducing loss of seed viability during the storage process with potentially huge savings in time, effort and expense in the rehabilitation and restoration industries. With a strong emphasis on the species-rich Western Australian region, Australian Seeds features photographs of more than 1200 species showing clearly their size and shape. Comprehensive seed germination data enables users to know how long to allow for germination times and whether some form of pre-germination treatment is required and what this should be. This is of major importance to horticulturists and agriculturists planning crop and weed control programmes. It will also be a valuable resource to anyone interested in Australian flora.
