Book Synopsis Competition and Stability in Banking by : Xavier Vives
Download or read book Competition and Stability in Banking written by Xavier Vives and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2020-11-03 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A distinguished economist examines competition, regulation, and stability in today's global banks Does too much competition in banking hurt society? What policies can best protect and stabilize banking without stifling it? Institutional responses to such questions have evolved over time, from interventionist regulatory control after the Great Depression to the liberalization policies that started in the United States in the 1970s. The global financial crisis of 2007–2009, which originated from an oversupply of credit, once again raised questions about excessive banking competition and what should be done about it. Competition and Stability in Banking addresses the critical relationships between competition, regulation, and stability, and the implications of coordinating banking regulations with competition policies. Xavier Vives argues that while competition is not responsible for fragility in banking, there are trade-offs between competition and stability. Well-designed regulations would alleviate these trade-offs but not eliminate them, and the specificity of competition in banking should be accounted for. Vives argues that regulation and competition policy should be coordinated, with tighter prudential requirements in more competitive situations, but he also shows that supervisory and competition authorities should stand separate from each other, each pursuing its own objective. Vives reviews the theory and empirics of banking competition, drawing on up-to-date analysis that incorporates the characteristics of modern market-based banking, and he looks at regulation, competition policies, and crisis interventions in Europe and the United States, as well as in emerging economies. Focusing on why banking competition policies are necessary, Competition and Stability in Banking examines regulation's impact on the industry's efficiency and effectiveness.

Book Synopsis Responding to Financial Crisis by : Adam S. Posen
Download or read book Responding to Financial Crisis written by Adam S. Posen and published by Peterson Institute for International Economics. This book was released on 2013 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Asian financial crisis of 1997–98 was devastating for the region, but policymakers at least believed that they gained a great deal of knowledge on how to prevent, mitigate, and resolve crises in the future. Fifteen years later, the Asian developing countries escaped the worst effects of the global crisis of 2008–10, in part because they had learned the right lessons from their own experience. In this important study, the Asian Development Bank and Peterson Institute for International Economics join forces to illuminate the con¬trast between Asia’s performance during the more recent crisis with its performance during its own crisis and the gap between what the United States and European Union leaders recommended to Asia then and what they have practiced on themselves since then. The overriding lessons emerging from the essays in this volume are that countries need to prepare for crises as if they cannot be prevented, make room for stabili¬zation policies and deploy them rapidly when crises hit, and address the need for self-insurance globally if they can, or regionally if they must. Contributors include Simon Johnson, William R. Cline, Joseph E. Gagnon, Stephan Haggard, Masahiro Kawai, Peter Morgan, Donghyun Park, Arief Ramayandi, Kwanho Shin, Edwin M. Truman, Shahin Vallee, Changyong Rhee, and Lea Sumulong

Book Synopsis The Oxford Handbook of the Economics of Central Banking by : David G. Mayes
Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of the Economics of Central Banking written by David G. Mayes and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-02-15 with total page 809 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The economic influence of central banks has received ever more attention given their centrality during the financial crises that led to the Great Recession, strains in the European Union, and the challenges to the Euro. The Oxford Handbook of the Economics of Central Banking reflects the state of the art in the theory and practice and covers a wide range of topics that will provide insight to students, scholars, and practitioners. As an up to date reference of the current and potential challenges faced by central banks in the conduct of monetary policy and in the search for the maintenance of financial system stability, this Oxford Handbook covers a wide range of essential issues. The first section provides insights into central bank governance, the differing degrees of central bank independence, and the internal dynamics of their decision making. The next section focuses on questions of whether central banks can ameliorate fiscal burdens, various strategies to affect monetary policy, and how the global financial crisis affected the relationship between the traditional focus on inflation targeting and unconventional policy instruments such as quantitative easing (QE), foreign exchange market interventions, negative interest rates, and forward guidance. The next two sections turn to central bank communications and management of expectations and then mechanisms of policy transmission. The fifth part explores the challenges of recent developments in the economy and debates about the roles central banks should play, focusing on micro- and macro-prudential arguments. The implications of recent developments for policy modeling are covered in the last section. The breadth and depth enhances understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing central banks.
Book Synopsis China's Monetary Policy by : Fan Conglai
Download or read book China's Monetary Policy written by Fan Conglai and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-11-04 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By applying modern monetary theories to China’s reality, this book reviews the development practice of China’s monetary policy and discusses the transitional goals of China’s monetary policy in the new stage of high-quality economic development. The book focuses on the formation mechanism of China’s inflation from the perspective of learning expectations, adaptive learning and dual labor market structure. It examines the monetary policy objectives of inflation management in an open economy, analyzes the causes of China’s price fluctuations from a global perspective and discusses the optimal policy space of the optimal RME exchange rate regime and the synergy between finance and business cycles. The author proposes a policy framework of capital regulation to deal with financial shocks and provides monetary policy options to deal with financial and business cycles. This work helps readers to understand the internal theoretical logic of the target transition of China’s monetary policy framework and points out that China’s monetary policy reforms are driven by the economic contradictions it faces at different stages of development. The title will provide references for scholars, students and policymakers interested in China’s monetary policy and provide experience and guidance for other developing countries to set their monetary policy targets and promote the transition of the monetary system.
