Book Synopsis Intellectual Property in Global Governance by : Chidi Oguamanam
Download or read book Intellectual Property in Global Governance written by Chidi Oguamanam and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-03-01 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intellectual Property in Global Governance critically examines the evolution of international intellectual property law-making from the build up to the TRIPS Agreement, through the TRIPS and post-TRIPS era. The book focuses on a number of thematic intellectual property issue linkages, exploring the formal and informal institutional interactions and multi-stakeholder holder intrigues implicated in the global governance of intellectual property. Using examples from bio-technology, bio-diversity, bio-prospecting and bio-piracy it investigates the shift or concentration in the focus of innovation from physical to life sciences and the ensuing changes in international intellectual property law making and their implications for intellectual property jurisprudence. It examines the character of the reception, resistance and various nuanced reactions to the changes brought about by the TRIPS Agreement, exploring the various institutional sites and patterns of such responses, as well as the escalation in the issue-linkages associated with the concept and impact of intellectual property law. Drawing upon multiple methodological approaches including law and legal theory; regime theory, globalization and global governance Chidi Oguamanam explores the intellectual property dynamics in the "Global Knowledge Economy" focusing on digitization and information revolution phenomenon and the concept of a post-industrial society. The book articulates an agenda for global governance of intellectual property law in the 21st century and speculates on the future of intellectual property in North-South relations.

Book Synopsis China and Global Trade Governance by : Ka Zeng
Download or read book China and Global Trade Governance written by Ka Zeng and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-12-13 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China's historic accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO) in November 2001 not only represents an important milestone in the country’s transition to a market economy and integration into the global economy, but is also among the most important events in the history of the WTO and the multilateral trading system. China and Global Trade Governance: China's First Decade in the World Trade Organization provides us with some fresh empirical data to assess the country’s behaviour in the liberal international economic regime. Such an assessment is both timely and necessary as it can help us better understand China’s role in the evolving structure of global economic governance, in addition to shedding light on the broader debate about the implications of the rise of China for the international system. Through a thorough examination of China’s WTO compliance record and its experience in multilateral trade negotiations, this book seeks to better understand the sources of constraints on China’s behaviour in the multilateral trade institution as well as the country’s influence on the efficacy of the World Trade Organization. In doing so, this project speaks directly to the following questions raised by China’s unprecedented ascent in the international system: Is China a rule maker, rule follower, or rule breaker in international regimes? Is Beijing a responsible stakeholder capable of making positive contributions to global trade governance in the long-term?
Book Synopsis Intellectual Property and the New Global Japanese Economy by : Ruth Taplin
Download or read book Intellectual Property and the New Global Japanese Economy written by Ruth Taplin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009-04-02 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Japanese economy is the second largest in the world and is becoming once more one of the most competitive. Despite the stagnation and deflation experienced during the 1990s, Japan has progressively become more aware of the need to be a global player, in particular under the radical administration of former Prime Minister Koizumi. A vigorous approach to intellectual property borrowed from the US and Europe, stressing the importance of innovation, assisted in kick-starting the Japanese economy again and has sustained its increasingly high performance. This book examines how Japan has used this new approach to intellectual property (IP) to revitalise its economy. It explains how IP has traditionally been used in Japan, and goes on to identify the ways in which this has changed in recent years, identifying the different facets of IP utilised to propel the Japanese economy to new heights: Firstly, by promoting IP through Technical Licensing Organisations (TLO) laws and uniting the universities with the needs of industry. Secondly, via radical changes to employees’ rights to compensation through the landmark decisions made by the Tokyo District Court. Thirdly, by the streamlining of patenting applications and procedures through the Tokyo and Osaka District IP Courts, and the Japanese Patent Office. Fourthly, by internationalising its capital markets, as displayed by the cooperation between the Tokyo Stock Exchange and the London Stock Exchange (LSE) and other bourses. Overall, this book is essential reading for all those interested in understanding the modern Japanese economy, and how it is adapting to exploit the opportunities and challenges of an increasingly globalised world.

Book Synopsis Copyright's Arc by : Martin Skladany
Download or read book Copyright's Arc written by Martin Skladany and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2020-09-03 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Copyright's Arc, Martin Skladany rejects a one-size-fits-all copyright regime. Within developed countries, copyright's incentives have spawned multinational corporations that create a plethora of slick, hyped entertainment options that encourage Americans to overconsume, whereas in developing countries, extreme copyright blocks the widespread distribution of entertainment, which impedes women's equality and human rights movements. Meanwhile, moderate copyright in middle-income countries helps foster artistic movements that forge inclusive national identities. Given these conditions, Skladany argues that copyright should vary between countries, following an arc across the development spectrum.

Book Synopsis Global Engineering Project Management by : M. Kemal Atesmen
Download or read book Global Engineering Project Management written by M. Kemal Atesmen and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2008-04-15 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Imagine the dynamics of an international engineering project such as this one: a U.S. group designs, prototypes, and qualifies disk drive heads; wafers for the drive heads are manufactured in the U.S. and sent to Malaysia for subassembly; a South Korean firm assembles these components; the final product, a fully automated disk drive, is completed in Japan. In addition to the global complexities of the project, there are a host of issues in leading the project team spread across continents. Global Engineering Project Management aligns real-world experiences in managing global projects with practical project management principles. The author demonstrates how to anticipate issues, covering everything from start-up planning and supply management to cost containment, post-project evaluation and protecting intellectual property. He explores technologies, virtual teams, traditions, economics, politics, and legal issues in the context of international projects, as well as compares the differences with domestic projects. He also highlights the complications of international bidding, the extra time and effort needed for multi-national team formation and management, and often overlooked project closure tasks. As the world goes global, engineering projects increasingly involve multiple countries, each having unique politics, cultures, and standards that all add layers of complexity to project management. These variables multiply fast and consequently a project manager's responsibilities multiply faster. Examining these challenges from start to finish, the book provides practical advice on how to navigate the issues unique to global engineering project management.
