Book excerpt: Thomas Ashby (1874-1931), the first scholar and third Director of the British School at Rome died at a tragically young age when he fell from a train. His 'Roman Campagna in Classical Times' remains a classic work of topographic research. This book, written by another former Director, tells the story of his life as an academic, as the Director responsible for building the British School at Rome in the Valle Giulia, as an ambulance driver in the First World War, as an avid photographer and, in the author's view, as the victim of the British tendency towards dark moral judgement.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: divThe stories behind the acquisition of ancient antiquities are often as important as those that tell of their creation. This fascinating book provides a comprehensive account of the history and development of classical archaeology, explaining how and why artifacts have moved from foreign soil to collections around the world. As archaeologist Stephen Dyson shows, Greek and Roman archaeological study was closely intertwined with ideas about class and social structure; the rise of nationalism and later political ideologies such as fascism; and the physical and cultural development of most of the important art museums in Europe and the United States, whose prestige depended on their creation of collections of classical art. Accompanied by a discussion of the history of each of the major national traditions and their significant figures, this lively book shows how classical archaeology has influenced attitudes about areas as wide-ranging as tourism, nationalism, the role of the museum, and historicism in nineteenth- and twentieth-century art./DIV

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Artistic Reconfigurations of Rome Kaspar Thormod examines how visions of Rome manifest themselves in artworks produced by international artists who have stayed at the city’s foreign academies. Structured as an alternative guide to Rome, the book represents an interdisciplinary approach to creating a dynamic visual history that brings into view facets of the city’s diverse contemporary character. Thormod demonstrates that when artists successfully reconfigure Rome they provide us with visions that, being anchored in a present, undermine the connotations of permanence and immovability that cling to the ‘Eternal City’ epithet. Looking at the work of these artists, the reader is invited to engage critically with the question: what is Rome today? – or perhaps better: what can Rome be?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cultural and material legacies of the Roman Republic and Empire in evidence throughout Rome have made it the "Eternal City." Too often, however, this patrimony has caused Rome to be seen as static and antique, insulated from the transformations of the modern world. In Excavating Modernity, Joshua Arthurs dramatically revises this perception, arguing that as both place and idea, Rome was strongly shaped by a radical vision of modernity imposed by Mussolini's regime between the two world wars. Italian Fascism's appropriation of the Roman past-the idea of Rome, or romanità- encapsulated the Fascist virtues of discipline, hierarchy, and order; the Fascist "new man" was modeled on the Roman legionary, the epitome of the virile citizen-soldier. This vision of modernity also transcended Italy's borders, with the Roman Empire providing a foundation for Fascism's own vision of Mediterranean domination and a European New Order. At the same time, romanità also served as a vocabulary of anxiety about modernity. Fears of population decline, racial degeneration and revolution were mapped onto the barbarian invasions and the fall of Rome. Offering a critical assessment of romanità and its effects, Arthurs explores the ways in which academics, officials, and ideologues approached Rome not as a site of distant glories but as a blueprint for contemporary life, a source of dynamic values to shape the present and future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The unrivaled collection of post-medieval British sculpture in the Victoria and Albert Museum is here catalogued and illustrated for the first time. Its great strengths lie in the works from the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries, and virtually every major sculptor active during this period is represented -- among them Nicholas Stone, John Michael Rysbrack, Louis Francois Roubiliac, Joseph Wilton, John Flaxman, and Alfred Stevens. A total of 770 pieces by 189 sculptors are included, more than a third of which have never been published before. The catalogue, wide-ranging and scholarly, will serve both as an invaluable work of reference, and in effect a history of the great tradition of sculpture in Britain.
