Book excerpt: "The Mande Studies Association (MANSA) looks back fifty years later at its 'ancestor' event, the International Conference of [i.e., on] Manding Studies, held at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London, June 30th - July 3rd, 1972. Gathered here are recollections from participants (including founding MANSA members, historian Lansiné Kaba and anthropologist Robert Launay), excerpts from the travel journal of the organizer David Dalby, linguist at SOAS, and the opening address by Senegalese president Léopold Sédar Senghor, as well as photographs and other memorabilia from the conference. Several accounts about Alex Haley, who was a public speaker in conjunction with the conference, and his "Roots" project are included. Rounding out the commemoration is the celebration of "Fifty Years of Mande Studies at SOAS" organized by ethnomusicologist Lucy Durán, devoted to the history of the kora at SOAS, which concluded with a concert by master kora musician Ballaké Sissoko."--Page 4 of cover.

Book Synopsis Beyond Timbuktu by : Ousmane Oumar Kane
Download or read book Beyond Timbuktu written by Ousmane Oumar Kane and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2016-06-07 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Renowned for its madrassas and archives of rare Arabic manuscripts, Timbuktu is famous as a great center of Muslim learning from Islam’s Golden Age. Yet Timbuktu is not unique. It was one among many scholarly centers to exist in precolonial West Africa. Beyond Timbuktu charts the rise of Muslim learning in West Africa from the beginning of Islam to the present day, examining the shifting contexts that have influenced the production and dissemination of Islamic knowledge—and shaped the sometimes conflicting interpretations of Muslim intellectuals—over the course of centuries. Highlighting the significant breadth and versatility of the Muslim intellectual tradition in sub-Saharan Africa, Ousmane Kane corrects lingering misconceptions in both the West and the Middle East that Africa’s Muslim heritage represents a minor thread in Islam’s larger tapestry. West African Muslims have never been isolated. To the contrary, their connection with Muslims worldwide is robust and longstanding. The Sahara was not an insuperable barrier but a bridge that allowed the Arabo-Berbers of the North to sustain relations with West African Muslims through trade, diplomacy, and intellectual and spiritual exchange. The West African tradition of Islamic learning has grown in tandem with the spread of Arabic literacy, making Arabic the most widely spoken language in Africa today. In the postcolonial period, dramatic transformations in West African education, together with the rise of media technologies and the ever-evolving public roles of African Muslim intellectuals, continue to spread knowledge of Islam throughout the continent.

Book Synopsis Yonder Come the Blues by : Paul Oliver
Download or read book Yonder Come the Blues written by Paul Oliver and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2001-02-22 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Yonder Come the Blues combines three influential and much-quoted books: Savannah Syncopators; Blacks, Whites and Blues and Recording the Blues. Updated with additional essays, this 2001 volume discusses the crucial early development of the blues as a music of Blacks in the United States, explaining some of the most significant factors that shaped this music. Together, these three texts emphasise the significance of the African heritage, the mutuality of much white and black music and the role of recording in consolidating the blues, thus demonstrating the importance of these formative elements in its complex but combined socio-musical history. Redressing some of the misconceptions that persist in writing on African-American music, this book will be essential reading for all enthusiasts of blues, jazz and country music and will be important for students of African-American studies and music, popular music and popular culture.
