Plasmas 1, 1511 (1994)] have explored the limits for forming, maintaining, and controlling these plasmas. C-Mod provides a unique platform for studying such discharges: the ions and electrons are tightly coupled by collisions and the plasma has no internal particle or momentum sources. The double-barrier mode comprised of an edge barrier with an internal transport barrier (ITB) can be induced at will using off-axis ion cyclotron range of frequency (ICRF) injection on either the low or high field side of the plasma with either of the available ICRF frequencies (70 or 80 MHz). When enhanced D [alpha] high confinement mode (EDA H-mode) is accessed in Ohmic plasmas, the double barrier ITB forms spontaneously if the Hmode is sustained for [approx.] high confinement times. Transient single barriers are observed at the back transition from H- to L- mode, and also when pellet injection is accompanied by ICRF power. Double barriers are induced with injection of off-axis ICRF power deposition. These also arise spontaneously in Ohmic H-mode plasmas when the H-mode lasts for several energy confinement times. C-Mod provides a unique platform for studying such discharges: the ions and electrons are tightly coupled by collisions with Ti/Te=1, and the plasma has no internal particle or momentum sources. ITB plasmas with average pressure greater than 1 atmosphere have been obtained. To form an ITB, particle and thermal flux are reduced in the barrier region, allowing the neoclassical pinch to peak the density while maintaining the central temperature. Gyrokinetic simulation suggests that long wavelength drift wave turbulence in the core is marginally stable at the ITB onset, but steepening of the density profile destabilizes trapped electron (TEM) modes inside the barrier. The TEM ultimately drives sufficient outgoing particle flux to balance the inward pinch and halt further density rise, which allows control of particle and impurity peaking.

Book excerpt: Neutral beam heated discharges with internal transport barriers (ITB) have been observed in most of the world's major tokamaks including DIII-D, TFTR, JT-60U and JET. Improved core confinement has been observed over a range of q profiles, including negative central magnetic shear (NCS) and weak positive shear. In discharges with an L-mode edge, the duration of ITBs is generally limited to a few energy confinement times ([tau]{sub e}) by low-n MHD activity driven by the steep core pressure gradient or by q{sub min} passing through low-order rational values. In order for ITBs to be useful in achieving a more compact advanced tokamak, the radius of the ITB must be expanded and the pressure gradient must be controlled in order to optimize [beta]{sub N} and the bootstrap alignment. In this paper, the authors discuss the results of recent experiments on DIII-D to produce and sustain ITBs for longer pulse lengths. Three techniques are evaluated: (1) reduction of neutral beam power (P{sub NBI}) and plasma current to form a weaker ITB which can be sustained; (2) use of an ELMing H-mode edge to help broaden the pressure profile and improve MHD instability; (3) modification of the plasma shape (squareness) to achieve smaller ELMs with a lower density pedestal at the edge.

Book excerpt: In this book, we introduced the concept of Internal transport barrier (ITB) which is generally indulged to grow up the regions of reduced transport which can be helpful for tokomak operation. Internal transport barriers are created near the low order rational surface. i.e. (q = 2, 5/2 and 3). These ITBs are reactive to some conditions with regards to MHD instabilities, which generate a considerable plasma flow, creating magnetic islands, which are wished as probable mechanisms for the development of ITB. Double tearing modes become active due to electron viscosity and the MHD flows in the development the modes is extended from quasi-linear solution in a slab geometry to nonlinear solution in cylindrical geometry for the torus of large aspect ratio. The DTM mediated by electron viscosity is considered to trigger an ITB with non-monotonic q- profiles in advance tokomak (AT) operation.
