Book excerpt: This study examined rates of internal phosphorus (P) loading from sediments in Lake Pepin, a natural impoundment located on the upper Mississippi River. Laboratory determinations of rates of P release from the sediment, measured using intact sediment core systems, were very high, with mean values ranging from 3.8 to 15 mg /sq m/day under oxic and anoxic conditions, respectively. Independently determined Fickean diffusional fluxes (mean of 4.9 mg /sq m/day), measured in situ under oxic conditions using sediment peepers, were not statistically different from those rates determined in the laboratory under similar temperature, pH, and oxygen conditions. The dominant inorganic P fractions in the sediments were NaOH-extractable P followed closely by HCl-extractable P. Under both oxic and anoxic conditions, significant correlations existed between rates of P release and the NHl4Cl- and NaOH extractable P fractions, suggesting that loosely bound and iron- and aluminum-bound sediment P contributed to P release from the sediments in this lake. Correlations between total sediment P and extractable sediment P fractions indicated that loosely bound and iron- and aluminum-bound P increased, while calcium-bound P decreased, with increasing total P content of the sediment. Results suggest that internal P loading from the sediments under oxic as well as anoxic conditions can play a very important role in the P economy of this system. jg p19.

Book excerpt: Complete, practical coverage of pollution control regulations and water quality modeling Water Quality Modeling for Wasteload Allocations and TMDLs provides practical guidance for engineers charged with determining the volume and character of wastewater that a body of water can receive without suffering environmental damage. Following the discussion on water pollution control regulations and their relationships to water quality modeling and wasteload allocation for determining the total maximum daily load (TMDL), the first half of the book focuses on quantifying the model coefficients to characterize physical, chemical, and biological processes of a variety of water quality problems. The remainder of the book guides engineers in the application of EPA-developed models for regulatory use. Presenting numerous case studies and a substantial amount of data, this comprehensive guide: * Covers practical applications of wasteload allocation * Provides guidance to develop technical information for obtaining National Pollution Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permits * Demonstrates the application of STREAM, QUAL2E, WASP, and HAR03 Water Quality Modeling for Wasteload Allocations and TMDLs is an essential resource for state and federal water quality agencies, consulting engineering firms, publicly owned treatment works, environmental biologists and chemists, and public health officials involved with pollution control.

Information and perspectives crucial to the understanding and management of current environmental problems are covered, such as eutrophication, acid rain and climate change. Because the articles are drawn from an encyclopedia, the articles are easily accessible to interested members of the public, such as conservationists and environmental decision makers. - Includes an up-to-date summary of global aquatic ecosystems and issues - Covers current environmental problems and management solutions - Features full-color figures and tables to support the text and aid in understanding

Book excerpt: Inland aquatic habitats occur world-wide at all scales from marshes, swamps and temporary puddles, to ponds, lakes and inland seas; from streams and creeks to rolling rivers. Vital for biological diversity, ecosystem function and as resources for human life, commerce and leisure, inland waters are a vital component of life on Earth. The Encyclopedia of Inland Waters describes and explains all the basic features of the subject, from water chemistry and physics, to the biology of aquatic creatures and the complex function and balance of aquatic ecosystems of varying size and complexity. Used and abused as an essential resource, it is vital that we understand and manage them as much as we appreciate and enjoy them. This extraordinary reference brings together the very best research to provide the basic and advanced information necessary for scientists to understand these ecosystems – and for water resource managers and consultants to manage and protect them for future generations. Encyclopedic reference to Limnology - a key core subject in ecology taught as a specialist course in universitiesOver 240 topic related articles cover the field Gene Likens is a renowned limnologist and conservationist, Emeritus Director of the Institute of Ecosystems Research, elected member of the American Philosophical Society and recipient of the 2001 National Medal of Science Subject Section Editors and authors include the very best research workers in the field

Book excerpt: This volume deals with many aspects of the physical and chemical limnology of the Salton Sea, California’s largest lake and a lake that may soon to be the object of a multi-billion dollar restoration project. Formed in 1905 by an accidental breaching of outtake structures on the Colorado River, and maintained since then by large and steady inflows of agricultural wastewaters, it has long served as an important habitat for fish and waterbirds and as a major recreational area for people. Highlly eutrophic and with a salinity that is steadily rising and now nearly 50 g/L, it is a lake in great trouble. Most fish species have disappeared, and large fish and bird dieoffs have been common in recent decades. Many of the papers in this volume represent studies undertaken with the aim of informing the re-engineering of this ecosystem so that its value to wildlife and man can be restored or enhanced.
