Book excerpt: The Middle Minoan III period on Crete was initially identified and studied in detail at Knossos by Sir Arthur Evans. Subsequent scholarly attention focused on the preceding Old Palace period and the apparent floruit of the New Palaces at the beginning of the Late Bronze Age. In consequence one of the critical transitions in Minoan culture has been virtually overlooked, giving rise to confused and ill-informed judgements concerning developments in Crete and further afield. With numerous innovations in art, architecture and material culture - notably an entirely new palace at Galatas - the changes in Middle Minoan III are striking, and appear to herald a new political organisation of the island, centred on Knossos. The papers in this volume, presented at the first colloquium to be held in the Villa Ariadne at Knossos, now restore the period to its rightful position. The specialist contributions cover most key sites where Middle Minoan III occupation has been identified. The aim has been to rehabilitate Middle Minoan III as a dynamic period in Crete and also on Thera, in order to provide a better understanding of socio-political change across the island and beyond in the latter part of the Middle Bronze Age.

Book excerpt: Born to a wealthy, storied family of Spanish/French origins with Cuban connections, architect Henri Jova was educated at Cornell, served in the South Pacific in World War II, and spent three years at the American Academy in Rome before taking his first job in New York City. In 1954, hoping for a short respite from Manhattan's frantic pace, Jova came to Atlanta. To his own surprise and the city's good fortune, he went on to spend his entire career in Atlanta. Here, Jova and longtime companion David Roland Rinehart look back at the architect's life and career. Jova arrived in Atlanta at the beginning of a period of great change. Over the next five decades, Jova and later his firm, Jova/Daniels/Busby, helped transform the state capital into a regional metropolis, designing some of its signature buildings and molding the face it would show to the world. As Stanley Abercrombie observes in his foreword, Jova/Daniels/Busby "was indisputably a producer of modern design, but I think we today can often see in that design an underlying symmetry and order." This timeless melding of the modern and the classic is evident in many of the city's landmark structures, including Colony Square, the original Underground Atlanta, the City Hall addition, and the Carter Presidential Center.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My song lyrics were a consequence of being a captive in my automobile twice a month from 1978 to 1981 while driving eight hours at a stretch, mostly at night. This opportunity to reminisce made me recall incidents and people who, for one reason or another, left an indelible impression on my mind. With a small cassette tape recorder by my side, I decided one day to express my thoughts, memories, and feelings. As the words formed phrases and sentences they fell into a rhythm and evolved into melodies that became my form of self-expression for about two years. I never tried, consciously, to be poetic or profound.Writing in the first person singular seemed the easiest way to go. Taking advantage of poetic license it worked well even when I, personally, had the experience only as an observer.Because I have had no musical training I depended on a friend to transcribe the songs from tape to lead sheet form and piano accompaniment.Where I used real names, the songs were intended to be a tribute to the persons. Where a fictitious name was used, it was no less a tribute.
