Book excerpt: Excerpt from College Algebra We have endeavored to develop the topics treated in as logical and scientific a manner as was consistent with good pedagogy. The ground required for entrance to the scientific courses of the leading Colleges and Schools, or that required in the freshman year by the students in the course in arts has been covered, and in addition the needs of more advanced students have been kept in mind. Rather more ground is covered than is laid down in the require ments for the examinations in Advanced Algebra by the College Entrance Examination Board. In any case no dith culty will be experienced in omitting the extra parts if the teacher so desires. The major portion Of the book has been used in pamphlet form for several years with good results by the freshmen at Syracuse University. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Second Course in Algebra This book is designed to follow the authors' First Course in Algebra or any other text of similar scope and treatment. Experience shows that when a student returns to the study of algebra, after even a summer's vacation, a review is very necessary; and that it is absolutely indispensable if he comes back after a year spent on geometry. The review presented in the early chapters is brief, yet sufficiently thorough. Each review topic has been given a broader and more advanced treat ment than is permissible in a first course. New material is used throughout and many new applications are given in order to make the entire review appeal to the student as fresh and inviting. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Review of Algebra IN most high schools the course in Elementary Algebra is finished by the end of the second year. By the senior year, most students have forgotten many of the principles, and a thorough review is necessary in order to prepare college candi dates for the entrance examinations and for effective work in the freshman year in college. Recognizing this need, many schools are devoting at least two periods a week for part of the senior year to a review of algebra. For such a review the regular textbook is inadequate. From an embarrassment of riches the teacher finds it laborious to select the proper examples, while the student wastes time in searching for scattered assignments. The object of this book is to conserve the time and effort of both teacher and student, by providing a thorough and effective review that can readily be completed, if need be, in two periods a week for a half year. Each student is expected to use his regular textbook in algebra for reference, as he would use a dictionary, to recall a definition, a rule, or a process that he has forgotten. He should be encouraged to think his way out wherever possible, however, and to refer to the textbook only when forced to do so as a last resort. The definitions given in the General Outline should be reviewed as occasion arises for their use. The whole Outline can be profitably employed for rapid class reviews, by covering the part of the Outline that indicates the answer, the method, the example, or the formula, as the case may be. The whole scheme of the book is ordinarily to have a page of problems represent a day's work. This, of course, does not apply to the Outlines or the few pages of theory, which can be covered more rapidly. By this plan, making only a part of the omissions indicated in the next paragraph, the essentials of the algebra can be readily covered, if need be, in from thirty to thirty-two lessons, thus leaving time for tests, even if only eighteen weeks, of two periods each, are allotted to the course. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fusion Mathematics: A Correlation and Unification of Intermediate Algebra and Plane Trigonometry The achievement of the educational Objectives that should be realized by the study Of mathematics necessitates a textbook that: (1) is written to the student; (2) consciously aims to develop in the student those qualities and attitudes that will better fit him for life in the modern world; (3) embodies a clear understanding Of the varying needs, interests, and mental capacities Of the student. With a clear understanding Of these considerations and their educational implications, this book was prepared. This book is written to the student. It is self-teaching. Each new concept is developed by statements and questions to be completed by the student. This leads him through his own activity to the disco-very Of new meanings. Afterwards he is presented with a simple, clear, and accurate statement Of the results Of his investigation and thinking. Finally, illustrative examples fully worked out clear up any remaining difficulty. The motivation-that introduces each new idea is planned to arouse the interest Of the student and to show him his need for further study. Furthermore, each topic, as far as possible, is introduced when the work of the preceding topic makes it seem worth while to the student. For example, the binomial theorem is developed after he has raised several binomials to powers and has felt the need for a shorter and a general method. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Advanced Algebra for Colleges and Schools Many colleges and universities offer an Optional examination in Advanced Algebra in addition to the examination in Ele mentary Algebra required of all candidates for matriculation. The scientific and technical schools have increased from time to time the amount of algebra that must be mastered before students may pass the entrance examinations, until their requirements at present for admission are substantially equal to what is commonly included under Advanced Algebra. This work is designed to prepare students in a thorough manner to meet both Of these tests. The earlier pages of the work are identical with the author's Academic Algebra, but several of the topics discussed in that book have been modified in treatment or enlarged in Scope, so that they may the better meet the requirements of an advanced course, and more than one hundred sixty pages of new matter have been added. Consequently this volume contains a complete course in both elementary and advanced algebra. The treatment is believed to be sufficiently full and rigorous to meet the demands of college courses in algebra, and to give a scholarly basis for specializing in this science. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Advanced Algebra This book is designed for use in secondary schools and in short college courses. It aims to present in concise but clear form the portions of algebra that are required for entrance to the most exacting colleges and technical schools. The chapters on algebra to quadratics are intended for a review of the subject, and contain many points of view that should be presented to a student after he has taken a first course on those topics. Throughout the book the attention is concentrated on subjects that are most vital, pedagogically and practically, while topics that demand a knowledge of the calculus for their complete comprehension (as multiple roots, and Sturm's theorem) or are more closely related to other portions of mathematics (as theory of numbers, and series) have been omitted. The chapter on graphical representation has been introduced early, in the belief that the illumination which it affords greatly enlivens the entire presentation of algebra. The discussion of the relation between pairs of linear equations and pairs of straight lines is particularly suggestive. In each chapter the discussion is directed toward a definite result. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Numbers Universalized, Vol. 2: An Advanced Algebra The aim of the author in preparing this part of his work has not been so much to give completeness to the various subjects treated as to lead the student to a comprehension of the fundamentals of a wider range of subjects, and to cultivate in him a taste for mathematical investigation. It is believed that the plan adopted will give the general student a broader and more practical knowledge of algebra, and will lead to better results in a preparatory course of study for the university than would a completer treatment of fewer subjects requiring an equal amount Of space in their development and more time in their mastery. While a sufficient number of examples have been placed under each head to Offer opportunity for the application of the principles and laws developed, there will not be found an unnecessary multiplicity of them to retard the progress of the pupil in his onward course. It begins at the point where students enter upon the study of what is commonly called written arithmetic. It contains a simple but logical presentation of the topics included within its scope. An abundance of written exercises has been supplied to secure expertness in computation, and a great number of oral examples to inspire the pupil with confidence in his ability to reason correctly. The book is comprehensive enough to meet the needs of those who, while they cannot remain in school long enough to become thoroughly versed in the science of arithmetic, yet desire to gain a knowledge of the principles and processes relating to practical life. The "Intermediate Arithmetic" serves a double purpose. It is a comprehensive elementary book, and a thorough preparation for the more rigid work of the author's "Standard Arithmetic."
