Book excerpt: The home is under siege both because it is an enormous potential market and because of changing human behaviours. It is also interesting as a platform for new technology and for analysis of everyday life, as in this essay. We will describe the home as a context where the interactors are humans (inhabitants), things (artefacts in the home), and information. The interactions at home are activities and routines. This essay presents and structures quotes and thoughts on the organization and decoration of the home - another huge topic. To limit the scope somewhat we will look for theory to discuss only related to homes of the western middle class. The essay is yet another piece in a puzzle to understand information technology in the future.

This essay presents and structures thoughts on the organization, use and decoration of the home, discussing a particular home. The text continues the exploration of interior design started in “InTerior design – Konvolute” (Gulliksson web). It is also yet another piece in a puzzle to understand information technology in the future everyday life. The next chapters will introduce the floor plan of the ground floor @Lummerstigen 12 which will be our reference in the discussions that follows. The point of view is limited to western middle class and much of the discussion will be further constrained by a typical family house @Lummerstigen 12 in Sweden where a pair of middle aged parents live with 3 children in their late teens. Further characterization will be described where it applies in the discussions. After the floor plan has been introduced we will examine some already existing pervasive environments in the home: climate, wiring, lighting and soundscape. We work our way through the hallway, living room and the kitchen. This will in other words be yet another tour of a home and the structure of it will roughly follow the one used by Abercombie, i.e. discussing rooms, enclosings, furniture, decoration and artifacts including technical appliances. Along the tour references to the literature and ideas from research will be given.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interior Design Concept combines a comprehensive introduction to design concept, with a reflective examination upon the various ways it can be understood, harnessed, and implemented. Within interior architecture and design, the power of conceptual thinking to fuel creativity, innovation, and collaboration is evident in the use of design concept. Broadly accepted as an essential component in the design process, design concept is a notoriously elusive topic which has, until now, received little critical attention. This book offers a reevaluation of current academic ideas about design methodologies and the nature of inspiration, alongside brand-new data from an international research study to help clarify what creativity really means in the modern world. Topics addressed throughout this text will examine the functions and definitions of design concept, analyze how it may be identified and integrated within the design process, investigate from where ideas for design concepts can emerge and, lastly, consider how ideas about them might be communicated in various ways. This book offers students, educators, and practitioners a concise explanation of what design concept is, why it plays such an integral role in the design process, and how it is utilized by interior architects and designers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent decades have seen a dramatic shift away from social forms of gambling played around roulette wheels and card tables to solitary gambling at electronic terminals. Slot machines, revamped by ever more compelling digital and video technology, have unseated traditional casino games as the gambling industry's revenue mainstay. Addiction by Design takes readers into the intriguing world of machine gambling, an increasingly popular and absorbing form of play that blurs the line between human and machine, compulsion and control, risk and reward. Drawing on fifteen years of field research in Las Vegas, anthropologist Natasha Dow Schüll shows how the mechanical rhythm of electronic gambling pulls players into a trancelike state they call the "machine zone," in which daily worries, social demands, and even bodily awareness fade away. Once in the zone, gambling addicts play not to win but simply to keep playing, for as long as possible--even at the cost of physical and economic exhaustion. In continuous machine play, gamblers seek to lose themselves while the gambling industry seeks profit. Schüll describes the strategic calculations behind game algorithms and machine ergonomics, casino architecture and "ambience management," player tracking and cash access systems--all designed to meet the market's desire for maximum "time on device." Her account moves from casino floors into gamblers' everyday lives, from gambling industry conventions and Gamblers Anonymous meetings to regulatory debates over whether addiction to gambling machines stems from the consumer, the product, or the interplay between the two. Addiction by Design is a compelling inquiry into the intensifying traffic between people and machines of chance, offering clues to some of the broader anxieties and predicaments of contemporary life. At stake in Schüll's account of the intensifying traffic between people and machines of chance is a blurring of the line between design and experience, profit and loss, control and compulsion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book advances the agenda of informality as a transnational phenomenon, recognizing that contemporary urban and regional challenges need to be addressed at both local and global levels. This project may be considered a call for action. Its urgency derives from the impact of the pandemic combined with the effects of climate change in informal settlements around the world. While the notion of “the informal” is usually associated with the analysis and interventions in informal settlements, this book expands the concept of informality to acknowledge its interdisciplinary parameters. The book is geographically organized into five sections. The first part provides a conceptual overview of the notion of “the informal,” serving as an introduction and reflection on the subject. The following sections are dedicated to the principal regions of the Global South—Latin America, US–Mexico Borderlands, Asia, and Africa—while considering the interconnections and correspondences between urbanism in the Global South and the Global North. This book offers a critical introduction to groundbreaking theories and design practices of informality in the built environment. It provides essential reading for scholars, professionals, and students in urban studies, architecture, city planning, urban geography, sociology, anthropology, cultural studies, economics, and the arts. As a critical survey of informality, the book examines history, theory, and production across a range of informal practices and phenomena in urbanism, architecture, activism, and participatory design. Authored by a diverse and international cohort of leading educators, theorists, and practitioners, 45 chapters refine and expand the discourse surrounding informal cities.

Book excerpt: "Each of us carries an interior design, a secret personal world where we allow ourselves to explore our most private hopes and fears. In Interior Design, Philip Graham presents a gallery of people who, for all their strangeness, seem deeply, touchingly familiar." "When Bradley's parents die suddenly, he is tormented as much by their absence as he is by the thought that their guardian angels, now reassigned to other people, have taken his parents' secrets with them. Haunted by this disturbing idea, he becomes obsessed with his own angel and lives each day with the belief that someone always jealously hovers at his side, hungry for his every thought." "Elsewhere, a young boy lies awake at night listening to his parents' bitter arguments over his father's struggling shoe business. Huddled under his covers with a flashlight, the boy draws maps of imaginary planets on tennis balls, creating little worlds where his troubled family is somehow always happy." "Mysterious, tender, and sometimes frightening, these stories are fueled by the conviction that what moves us most in our lives are our deepest secrets and that our most intense adventures are the ones we create within ourselves."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc.
