Book Synopsis Confronting Corruption by : Fritz Heimann
Download or read book Confronting Corruption written by Fritz Heimann and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-11-02 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Corruption undermines nearly all key legal and developmental priorities today, including the effective functioning of democratic institutions and honest elections; environmental protection; human rights and human security; international development programs; and fair competition for global trade and investment. This book chronicles the global anticorruption steps taken since the movement advanced after the end of the Cold War. It provides a realistic assessment of the present state of affairs by critically evaluating what existing anticorruption programs and treaties have accomplished and documenting their shortcomings, while developing an action agenda for the next decade. The authors argue that reformative action is imperative, and the forces of globalization and digital communication will level the playing field and erode the secrecy corruption requires. They define corruption, document its effects, discuss the initiatives that changed public perception, analyze the lessons learned, and then evaluate how to move forward with existing initiatives charting a new path with new, differentiated strategies.
Book Synopsis Transnational Corruption and Corporations by : Simeon Obidairo
Download or read book Transnational Corruption and Corporations written by Simeon Obidairo and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-02-11 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What are the challenges to the prevention of transnational bribery by multinational corporations in international business transactions? This book examines two particular constraints operating on the regulation of transnational corruption in general and bribery in particular. Firstly, it explores the limits of international cooperation in the regulation of transnational corruption and highlights the disparities between the capacities of individual states to pursue adequate regulation. It also considers the role and progress of international bodies such as the OEDC and the response of selected domestic legal systems in tackling the problem. Secondly, the book examines the liability regime for corporations and again, highlights an unexpected shortcoming of multilateral policy in the administration and enforcement of international agreements. The book will be of value both to students and researchers with an interest in the regulation of transnational corruption as well as policy-makers and practitioners working in this area.

Download or read book Two-Edged Sword written by Nicholas Tracy and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2012-10-01 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the first major study of the Royal Canadian Navy's contribution to foreign policy, Nicholas Tracy takes a comprehensive look at the paradox that Canada faces in participating in a system of collective defence as a means of avoiding subordination to other countries. Created in 1910 to support Canadian autonomy, the Royal Canadian Navy has played an important role in defining Canada's relationship with the United Kingdom, the United States, and NATO. Initially involved with participation in Imperial and Commonwealth defence, the RCN's role shifted following the Second World War to primarily ensuring the survival of the NATO alliance and deflecting American influence over Canada. Tracy demonstrates the ways in which the Navy's priorities have realigned since the end of the Cold War, this time partnering with the US and NATO navies in global policing. Insightful, detailed, and grounded in solid historical scholarship, A Two-Edged Sword presents a complete portrait of the shifting relevance and future of a cornerstone of Canadian defence.
Book Synopsis Reforming the United Nations [electronic resource] by : Joachim Müller
Download or read book Reforming the United Nations [electronic resource] written by Joachim Müller and published by Martinus Nijhoff Publishers. This book was released on 2006 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United Nations is in need of reform. There has always been widespread agreement that this is the case - indeed throughout the 60-year history of the Organization. Differences over the best cure reflect the political confrontation between its 191 member states. The institution has been criticized to lack legitimacy, to need accountability and to be inefficient with a bloated bureaucracy. Recently, allegations of mismanagement and corruption in the Oil-for-Food Program have led to a crisis of confidence. The public debate followed reform initiatives for enlarging the Security Council, achieving the Millennium Development Goals, and establishing new collective mechanisms to protect human rights, counter terrorism and respond to crimes against humanity. Strengthening oversight, governance and management practices aimed at introducing fundamental institutional changes. The publication describes the reform process leading to the United Nations Summit in September 2005. The achievements remain disappointing with the failure to approve a grand bargain. A number of recommendations are put forward to facilitate the reform process in the United Nations, realising, however, that this will remain cumbersome and a lengthy step-by-step effort.

Book Synopsis Labeling Genetically Modified Food by : Paul Weirich
Download or read book Labeling Genetically Modified Food written by Paul Weirich and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2007-11-01 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Food products with genetically modified (GM) ingredients are common, yet many consumers are unaware of this. When polled, consumers say that they want to know whether their food contains GM ingredients, just as many want to know whether their food is natural or organic. Informing consumers is a major motivation for labeling. But labeling need not be mandatory. Consumers who want GM-free products will pay a premium to support voluntary labeling. Why do consumers want to know about GM ingredients? GM foods are tested to ensure safety and have been on the market for more than a decade. Still, many consumers, including some with food allergies, want to be cautious. Also, GM crops may affect neighboring plants through pollen drift. Despite tests for environmental impact, some consumers may worry that GM crops will adversely effect the environment. The study of risk and its management raises questions not settled by the life sciences alone. This book surveys various labeling policies and the cases for them. It is the first comprehensive, interdisciplinary treatment of the debate about labeling genetically modified food. The contributors include philosophers, bioethicists, food and agricultural scientists, attorneys/legal scholars, and economists.
