Book excerpt: Excerpt from Interferometric Measurements of the Complex Dielectric Constant of Liquids The validity of the perfect square approximation depends upon the degree to which 5 z 17. For that reason, 5 values have been calculated for a range of values of the complex dielectric constant using standard expressions for the complex Fresnel reflection coefficient. For radiation of free-space wavelength )\o mm and angle of incidence 90 35 results of these calculations are shown in the contour diagram of Fig. L. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Method of Determining Dielectric Constants of Liquids by Undamped Oscillations: Thesis The first published results on the measurements of dielectric constants were those obtained by Faraday in his classical experi ments in which he demonstrated that the capacity of a condenser de pends upon the substance used as a dielectric. (experimental Re searches in Electricity, vol.i; p Finding that the capacity 0 a condenser in which sulphur was used as a dielectric was times as great as that of the same condenser with air as the dielectric, Faraday termed this value the Specific inductive capacity of sul phur. The term dielectric constant, however; has been more genera ly used of late years. Previous to the year 1889, all methods of determining the dielectric constant of a substance made use of elec tric fields set up by either direct or slowly alternating currents. The discoveries of Hertz in 1888 suggested new methods in which high frequency currents were employed. The first of these methods, that of j.j. Thomson, was developed in 1889, and employed a frequency of approximately twenty five millions. A11 high frequency methods may be divided into three general classes: (1) those based upon Maxwell' electromagnetic theory of light; (2) capacity methods; and (3) those based upon the theory of dielectric polarization. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dielectric Constant of Liquid Parahydrogen Of special interest to this inquiry are those few studies of the dielectric constant that cover wide ranges of temperature, pressure and density. The extremes of temperature are represented by the work of van Itterbeek and Spaepen12(20 z9ik) and Forro13 (295 s7ik). Each of these-authors obtained constant values of p within their experimental limits of accuracy. A more rigorous test is provided by the data of Michels, Sanders and Schipper 4at 25 and 100c and at pressures from 1 to 1425 atm. The maximum density achieved equals that of saturated liquid at 26k. In spite of the great range of densities covered by Michels et al, the polarization showed no discernible trend with density or temperature. Their average value is included in table 1. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electromagnetic moisture measurement technologies have proven to be valuable tools in diverse applications. This monograph covers basic aspects of nondestructive electromagnetic methods of water content determination and relates to the associated highly multidisciplinary field of research and development. It also presents a comprehensive selection of relevant field-tested methods and instruments. The fundamentals of electromagnetic field interactions with dipolar materials are briefly discussed, with special attention towards the dielectric properties of water and aqueous solutions. A tutorial and overview of electromagnetic measurement methods is presented, including dielectric spectroscopy in broad frequency and time domains, as well as dielectric imaging techniques. This review is complemented by a demonstration of successful real-world implementations for the moisture determination of soils, snow, buildings and building materials, food and agricultural goods, as well as various industrial products. The text is completed by a guide concerning the use of reference liquids for the calibration of sensors and instrumentation and by a bibliography of more than 850 references. The monograph is useful as a reference book for researchers and engineers and as a textbook for upper-level students interested in the water content determination of materials.
