Book excerpt: In this thesis, we study the performance of multiuser detectors within an ad hoc multihop packet radio network. The network is modeled using an approach similar to that employed by Sousa and Silvester and Wang and O'Leary. Direct-sequence spread-spectrum multiple access signaling is assumed. The performance of the minimum mean square error multiuser detector is contrasted with that of the conventional single user matched filter detector. Then, we use these results to assess the overall performance of the ad hoc multihop packet radio network.

Book excerpt: Abstract: "This thesis addresses the problems of managing the transmissions of stations in a spread-spectrum packet radio network so that the system can remain effective when scaled to millions of nodes concentrated in a metropolitan area. The principal difficulty in scaling a system of packet radio stations is interference from other stations in the system. Interference comes both from nearby stations and from distant stations. Each nearby interfering station is a particular problem, because a signal received from it may be as strong as or stronger than the desired signal from some other station. Far-off interfering stations are not individually a problem, since each of their signals will be weaker, but the combined effect may be the dominant source of interference. The thesis begins with an analysis of propagation and interference models. The overall noise level in the system (mainly caused by the many distant stations) is then analyzed, and found to remain manageable even as the system scales to billions of nodes. A scheme for designing a scalable packet radio network is then presented. Included is a method of scheduling packet transmissions to avoid collisions (caused by interference from nearby stations) without the need for global coordination or synchronization. Simulations of a system of one thousand stations are used to verify and illustrate the methods used. A method of choosing routes (minimum-energy routes) is demonstrated in simulation to produce a fully connected and functional network for one hundred and one thousand randomly placed stations. Unfortunately, congestion as the system scales is unavoidable if the traffic is not limited to some degree of locality. If traffic is limited to a few hops, then for a large system the techniques presented in this thesis are superior to ideal time division multiplexing of a clear channel."

Book excerpt: Secondary multiple-access interference processes are characterized for multi-hop packet radio networks in which users are assumed to be Poisson-distributed in the plane and to use frequency-hopped spread-spectrum signaling with a receiver-oriented assign- ment of frequency-hopping patterns. The throughput per node and the average forward progress are then evaluated for frequency-hopped multi-hop networks which employ (i) random forward routing with fixed transmission radius (RFR) and (ii) most forward pro- gress routing with fixed transmission radius (MF%R). The optimal average number of neighbors and transmission radius are derived for these cases when Reed-Solomon forward-error-control coding with minimum distance decoding or binary convolutional coding with Viterbi decoding is employed.

Book excerpt: Slotted direct-sequence spread-spectrum multiple-access (DS/SSMA) packet broadcasting systems with random signature sequences are analyzed within the framework of the lower three layers of the International Standards Organization Reference Model of Open Systems Interconnection. At the physical layer, we show that a widely-used Gaussian approximation (which we call the Standard Gaussian Approximation) for the probability of data bit error in a chip and phase asynchronous system is accurate only when there are a large number of simultaneous users on the channel; otherwise, this approximation can be optimistic by several orders of magnitude. For interfering signals with fixed delays and phases relative to the desired signal, however, the Standard Gaussian Approximation is quite accurate for any number of simultaneous users. To obtain a closer approximation to the probability of data bit error for an asynchronous system, we introduce the Improved Gaussian Approximation, which involves finding the distribution of the multiple-access interference variance over all possible delay and phase values and then taking a Gaussian approximation over the support of the distribution and averaging the results. To accurately analyze packet performance at the data link layer, we first use the theory of moment spaces to gain insight on the effect of bit-to-bit error dependence caused by the constant relative delays and (possibly) phases of the interfering signals over the duration of a desired packet. Book excerpt: Multiple access interference is characterized for cellular mobile networks, in which users are assumed to be Poisson-distributed in the plane and employ frequency-hopped spread-spectrum signaling with transmitter-oriented assignment of frequency-hopping patterns. Exact expressions for the bit error probabilities are derived for binary coherently demodulated systems without coding. Approximations for the packet error probability are derived for coherent and noncoherent systems and these approximations are applied when forward-error-control coding is employed. In all cases, the effects of varying interference power are accurately taken into account according to some propagation law. Numerical results are given in terms of bit error probability for the exact case and throughput for the approximate analyses. Comparisons are made with previously derived bounds and it is shown that these tend to be very pessimistic. Keywords: Communications network; Multiple access; Frequency hopping; Spread spectrum; Error control coding. (jhd).

Book excerpt: A packet radio network is a collection of geographically distributed packet radio units communicating over a shared broadcast channel. Usually not all radio units are within hearing range of each other, and thus multihop operation is required. These networks represent the natural extension of point-to-point packet-switched data networks when mobile operation is desired. An important difference exists, however, with respect to the latter: due to the multiaccess nature of the radio channel, the success of a packet at a destination depends on the activity, during the transmission of the packet, of the neighbors of the destination, and on system parameters such as the type of signaling and received power levels. The conditions under which a packet is successfully received in the presence of interfering packets are designated as the capture mode. Due to the existence of multiuser interference, some form of coordination among the users is required when accessing the channel. This purpose is accomplished by the channel access protocol. (RRH).
