Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Metal/ceramic interfaces can be found in many engineering applications including microelectronic packaging, multi-layered films, coatings, joints, and composite materials. In order to design reliable engineering systems that contain metal/ceramic interfaces, a comprehensive understanding of interfacial and near interfacial failure mechanisms is necessary.

Book excerpt: The 17th University Conference on Ceramics, which also was the 7th LBL/MMRD International Materials Symposium, was held on the campus of the University of California at Berkeley from July 28 to August 1, 1980. It was devoted to the subject of surfaces and interfaces in ceramic and ceramic-metal systems. The program was timely and of great interest, as indicated by the large number of contributed papers, which included contributions from ten foreign countries. These proceedings are divided into the following categories dealing with the chemistry and physics of interfaces: calculations of interface/surface states, characterization of surfaces and inter faces, thermodynamics of interfaces, influence of surface and inter faces on selected ceramic processes, grain boundary structures, effects of grain boundaries on deformation and fracture, interfacial phenomena, formation of interfaces, development of adhesion, and reactions at interfaces. A number of papers deal specifically with the Si-Si02 interface, which probably has received more attention than any other because of its importance in the electronics industry. This coverage fulfills the principal objective of the symposium which was to explore and assess the current fundamental understand ing of interfaces and surfaces. A parallel objective of the symposium was fulfilled by a group of papers dealing with the correlation of interfacial characteris tics with mechanical behavior. This group includes papers dealing with the adherence of dissimilar materials at interfaces.

Book excerpt: The combination of distinct materials is a key issue in modern industry, whereas the driving concept is to design parts with the right material in the right place. In this framework, a great deal of attention is directed towards dissimilar welding and joining technologies. In the automotive sector, for instance, the concept of “tailored blanks”, introduced in the last decade, has further highlighted the necessity to weld dissimilar materials. As far as the aeronautic field is concerned, most structures are built combining very different materials and alloys, in order to match lightweight and structural performance requirements. In this framework, the application of fusion welding techniques, namely, tungsten inert gas or laser welding, is quite challenging due to the difference in physical properties, in particular the melting point, between adjoining materials. On the other hand, solid-state welding methods, such as the friction stir welding as well as linear friction welding processes, have already proved to be capable of manufacturing sound Al-Cu, Al-Ti, Al-SS, and Al-Mg joints, to cite but a few. Recently, promising results have also been obtained using hybrid methods. Considering the novelty of the topic, many relevant issues are still open, and many research groups are continuously publishing valuable results. The aim of this book is to finalize the latest contributions on this topic.

Book Synopsis Characteristics of Crack Propagation at the Interface Between Two Dissimilar Media by : D. R. Mulville

This book was released on 1975 with total page 59 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies were conducted on specimens of epoxy plates bonded to aluminum plates. The effect of surface roughness of the aluminum on fracture toughness was measured for four different surface finishes. It was found that increased surface roughness resulted in greater fracture toughness. This may be explained by the observation that the interfacial cracks replicated the surface features of the aluminum. Microscopic studies of the failure surfaces indicate that crack propagation occurs in the epoxy near the interface, and that a residue of epoxy remains bonded to the aluminum. The magnitude of the residual stresses due to casting and curing of the epoxy was determined by photoelastic techniques. Methods were developed for analyzing the birefringent pattern in the epoxy to determine the magnitude of the elastic residual stress and the frozen stress. It was found that residual stresses can contribute 15% to 20% of the strain required for crack initiation at the interface.
