Book excerpt: Dans ce travail, on traite de problèmes relatifs à l'investigation et à l'interprétation des propriétés magnétiques de multicouches en couches minces à partir de la Magnéto-Optique (MO), soit par Effect Kerr Magnéto-Optique (MOKE), soit par Magnéto-Optique sur la Génération de Seconde Harmonique (MOSHG). Dans ce mémoire, on doit distinguer plusiers parties: On propose une nouvelle technique, permettant de séparer les contributions MOKE provenant des interfaces ou des couches ferromagnétiques (FM). Cette méthode a permis d'étudier le magnétisme des interfaces dans la structure Au/Co/Au(111). Par MOKE on peut mesurer sélectivement les contributions MO provenant d'une seule couche FM dans la structure multicouche. A cet effet, la fonction de sensibilité en profondeur a été introduite. On a unifié des solutions proposées précédemment pour séparer le MOKE d'une seule des couches FM dans une structure bicouche FM. Deux nouvelles techniques on été proposées (la méthode des "vecteurs Kerr parallèles" et par "projection numérique en cascade"), pour séparer les signaux FM issus des différentes couches FM individuelles. Une procédure simple a été proposée pour déterminer la profondeur de la couche FM associée à une composante Kerr donnée. Nous avons découvert un nouvel effet Kerr MO, présent pour des couches FM déposées sur une surface vicinale; on l'a appelé "Vicinal-Induced-Surface-MOKE" (VISMOKE). Le VISMOKE est associé à l'aimantation planaire et il existe même pour un angle d'incidence nul. Le VISMOKE a été mis en évidence sur une couche de Co déposée sur une surface vicinale Au(322). Un formalisme original permettant de calculer les effets MOSHG a été proposé. Jusqu'à présent, aucune théorie n'existait pour préciser quel interface procurait la plus forte contribution MOSHG dans une structure multicouche. Le formalisme est basé sur l'émission de lumière par un ensemble de dipôles électriques ponctuels aux interfaces et permet d'introduire une distribution latérale et en profondeur des dipôles dans une structure non-isotrope. Nous avons montré, par exemple, que le contraste magnétique MOSHG dans la configuration pp est toujours plus sensible aux interfaces air/métal ou diélectrique/métal qu'aux interfaces métal/métal.

Book excerpt: Dans ce memoire, nous etudions la structure et les proprietes magnetiques de bicouches et multicouches composees d'une terre rare (dysprosium, holmium) et de zirconium et tentons d'etablir une relation entre les caracteristiques structurales et le comportement magnetique de ces echantillons. Les echantillons sont elabores par evaporation sous ultra-vide sur un substrat de silicium. Apres avoir optimise les parametres de depot (vitesse de depot, temperature du substrat...), nous avons realise des bicouches et multicouches terre rare/zirconium de differentes epaisseurs. L'analyse des echantillons en diffraction de rayons x et par microscopie electronique en transmission revele une structure granulaire, fortement texturee le long de la direction de croissance mais sans orientation preferentielle dans le plan des couches. La maille de la terre rare est comprimee dans le plan de base. La largeur des interfaces entre la terre rare et le zirconium a ete estimee a 1 ou 2 distances inter-reticulaires. Les mesures d'aimantation realisees sur les multicouches a l'aide d'un magnetometre a squid ont permis de mettre en evidence des proprietes interessantes, comme les modifications du diagramme de phases magnetiques de la terre rare en multicouche attribuees aux effets des deformations induites par les contraintes de croissance. Les phenomenes d'irreversibilite thermique et les importantes coercivites observes sur ces echantillons sont relies aux forts champs d'anisotropie qui regnent au niveau des interfaces et des joints de grains. L'anisotropie magnetique d'interface des multicouches est suffisante pour compenser l'anisotropie magnetocristalline de volume lorsque l'epaisseur de la couche de terre rare est voisine de 10 angstroms. Un modele de charges ponctuelles est utilise pour estimer l'anisotropie magnetique dans ces echantillons et suggere qu'un certain desordre au niveau de l'interface est necessaire pour induire une compensation de l'anisotropie de volume par l'anisotropie d'interface
