Book Synopsis Advances in Information Systems Science by : Julius T. Tou
Download or read book Advances in Information Systems Science written by Julius T. Tou and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, the fifth of a continuing series on information systems science, covers four timely topics which are in the mainstream of this field. In each chapter, an attempt is made to familiarize the reader with basic background information on the advances discussed, so that this volume may be used independently or in conjunction with the previous volumes. The emphasis in this volume is focused upon data organization and access methods, software for on-line minicomputer applications, advances in micropro graming, and gramm ars and recognizers for formal and natural languages. In Chapter 1, P. C. Patton presents a tutorial survey of data organiza tion and access methods which play a central role in information system design. Research in information processing has been shifted from numerical data processing to nonnumerical information handling. In the latter case, the information is carried not only by the data but also by the structure and organization of the data base. In this chapter, the author provides the reader with a comprehensive review of various data structures, including linear lists, array structures, tree structures, and multilinked structures. He also discusses the important problem of data-base design and management. This chapter concludes with several examples of information handling systems such as a matrix interpretive system, a generalized information management system, and a criminal justice information system. The rapid reduction in cost and great increase in capability of the mini computer have made it an attractive machine for information systems.

Book Synopsis Practical Aspects of Declarative Languages by : Gopal Gupta
Download or read book Practical Aspects of Declarative Languages written by Gopal Gupta and published by Springer. This book was released on 2003-05-20 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Declarative languages have traditionally been regarded by the mainstream c- puting community as too impractical to be put to practical use. At the same time, traditionalconferencesdevotedto declarativelanguagesdo not haveissues related to practice as their central focus. Thus, there are few forums devoted to discussion of practical aspects and implications of newly discovered results and techniques related to declarative languages. The goal of the First International Workshop on Practical Aspects of Declarative Languages (PADL) is to bring together researchers, practitioners and implementors of declarative languages to discuss practical issues and practical implications of their research results. The workshop was held in San Antonio, Texas, during January 18-19, 1999. This volume contains its proceedings. Fifty three papers were submitted in response to the call for papers. These papers were written by authors belonging to twenty one countries from six c- tinents. Each paper was assigned to at least two referees for reviewing. Twenty four papers were nally selected for presentation at the workshop. Many good papers could not be included due to the limited duration of the workshop. The workshop included invited talks by Mark Hayden of DEC/Compaq Systems - search Center, speaking on \Experiences Building Distributed Systems in ML," and Mark Wallace of Imperial College Center for Planning And Resource C- trol (IC-PARC), speaking on \ECLiPSe: Declarative Specic ation and Scalable Implementation.
Book Synopsis Foundations of Microprogramming by : Ashok K. Agrawala
Download or read book Foundations of Microprogramming written by Ashok K. Agrawala and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-06-25 with total page 437 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foundations of Microprogramming: Architecture, Software, and Applications discusses the foundations and trends in microprogramming, focusing on the architectural, software, and application aspects of microprogramming. The book reviews microprocessors, microprogramming concepts, and characteristics, as well as the architectural features in microprogrammed computers. The text explains support software and the different hierarchies or levels of languages. These include assembler languages which are mnemonic or symbolic representation of machine commands; the procedure oriented machine-dependent; and the procedure oriented machine independent. A simulator is used to interpret programs written in machine or micro-language before the instructions in the program can be run. A simulator and translator (which change some steps from one program written in another language to another program) should interface with the design language of the computer for these components to operate even when a new machine is developed. The book cites four existing computers which have "simple" diagonal microinstructions such as the Hewlett-Packard HP21MX and the Microdata 3200. Horizontal types of microinstructions allow parallel execution of many micro-operations, such as the Cal Data family of computers, the Varian 73, and the NANODATA QM-1. Microprogramming is applied in emulation, program enhancement, operating systems, signal processing, and graphics. The text can benefit programmers, computer engineers, computer technicians, and computer instructors dealing with many aspects of computers such as programming, hardware interface, networking, engineering or design.
