Book excerpt: Crop diversification can reduce weed-crop competition and contribute to ecological weed management, but the mechanisms by which crop diversity reduces weed-crop competition and the persistence of those effects are poorly understood. The legacy effects of crop diversity on weed-crop competition were tested after a multi-year field experiment that compared conspecific and heterospecific crop diversity in intercropped annual and perennial systems. In a greenhouse experiment, soil from the field experiment was collected and manipulated to elucidate the effects of soil microbes in determining weed-crop competition. After the final harvest in the field experiment a uniformity trial was conducted to evaluate the effects of crop diversity on weed community structure and compare weed-crop competition. In both cases, crop diversity had minimal effects on weed-crop competition. However, the annual and perennial cropping systems that contextualized the diversity treatments consistently influenced microbial plant-soil feedbacks, crop nutrient uptake, weed communities, and weed-crop competition.

Book excerpt: Overyielding, a phenomenon whereby plant production in mixture exceeds that of production in monoculture, has been attributed to complementary use of resources by different plant functional types. Few studies have examined the role of plant functional diversity and the concept of overyielding in food production systems. Different combinations of peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.), watermelon (Citrullus lanatus Thunb.), okra (Abelmoschus esculentus Moench.), cowpea (Vigna unguiculata L.), and pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) planted alone or in various intercropping combinations were investigated over two growing seasons in an organic system in the peak of summer heat in Texas. Results from land equivalent ratio (LER) indicate that the within-row intercropping combination of peanut, watermelon, and okra (Wpwo) and the four species combination with the addition of cowpea (Wpwoc) consistently overyielded both growing seasons, despite a reversal in dominance patterns exhibited by watermelon and okra between years. There was no effect of intercropping system on changes in total nitrogen (N) or soil organic carbon (SOC). However, soil microbial biomass carbon (SMB-C) was lower in Wpwo as compared to okra grown in monoculture. Although there was no difference in root length density (RLD) between cropping system, there was a significant positive linear relationship between RLD and SMB-C. Low leaf area index (LAI) values in cowpea and peanut monocultures resulted in higher daily soil temperatures and an increase in weed biomass. There was a strong inverse relationship between LAI and soil temperature, particularly with daily maximum soil temperature. No differences in physiological parameters were detected. In 2012, when watermelon was a subordinate crop, specific leaf area (SLA) and leaf N content were highest in the multispecies systems, particularly Wpwoc. Carbon to nitrogen ratio (C:N) was also lowest in Wpwo and Wpwoc as compared to watermelon grown in monoculture indicating watermelon underwent morphological changes at the leaf level due to competition for light and allocated less C to leaves when competition was reduced. Overall findings suggest that three and four species intercropping combinations, whereby each crop is selected to perform a specific function within the system, may provide small-scale sustainably-minded producers a model system that can be utilized in the peak of summer in southern climates and allow them to reduce inputs while increasing overall yields. Book excerpt: Reintroducing crop diversity and reducing external inputs are important initial steps to a more sustainable agriculture. The role of functional diversity was explored in an annual forage intercropping system. Four warm-season, drought-tolerant annual forage crops were evaluated for use in the Northeast United States. The species had two different functional traits, stature and nitrogen acquisition traits: 1) cowpea (Vigna unguiculata L., legume, short); 2) sunn hemp (Crotolaria juncea L., legume, tall); 3) pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum L., grass, short); and 4) sorghum sudangrass (Sorghum bicolor L. Moench x S. sudanense P., grass, tall) and were seeded in monocultures and in three and four species intercrops. Crop and weed biomass were sampled twice by clipping vegetation in 0.5 m2 area at approximately 45 and 90 days after planting (DAP). When averaged across site-years, crop biomass and crop growth rate of legume monocultures were lower than other treatments at both sampling times. Biomass for the monocultures at the second sampling date ranged from 2,500 kg ha-1 (cowpea) to 9,300 kg ha-1 (pearl millet). No biomass differences were found between the intercrops and grass monocultures, which ranged from 7,800 to 9,600 kg ha-1. Although the intercrop treatments did not produce more biomass than the two grass monoculture treatments, all intercrops had land equivalent ratios (LER) greater than 1. Grasses and intercrop treatments were similarly weed suppressive. The pearl millet-sorghum sudangrass-sunn hemp intercrop consistently produced the most biomass, but not significantly more than the pearl millet monoculture, which had a much lower seed cost. Therefore other potential benefits of summer annual forage intercrops (e.g. improved forage quality and increased soil health) must be considered to justify the increased seed costs. v.
