Book excerpt: The Minnesota Intercity Bus Study reviews and evaluates Minnesota's existing intercity bus network, determines changes and improvements based on needs and service gaps, and provides policy recommendations to meet intercity bus needs. Intercity bus service is defined as regularly scheduled, fixed route, limited stop service for the general public that connects places not in close proximity and makes meaningful connections to the larger intercity network. This study is meant to guide Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) staff in their continuing effort to improve the state's intercity bus program.

Book excerpt: The Indiana Intercity Bus Study identifies the existing industry as of 1980 and compares it to the national industry in several areas. The study also provides a profile of Indiana passengers. A financial analysis is included based on 1979 operating figures and determines the viability of the state industry on a route by route basis. Demand estimates were extrapolated from a 1980 ticket sample. The final chapter identifies existing state programs and assistance options available for Indiana. Given the financial condition of the industry and the social need identified in the passenger profile, we recommend assistance be made available to the industry. Cf. Download or read book Effective Approaches to Meeting Rural Intercity Bus Transportation Needs written by KFH Group and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 2002 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents results of research conducted under Transit Cooperative Research Program (TCRP) Project B-21, "Effective Approaches to Meeting Rural Intercity Bus Transportation Needs." The project identified strategies for initiating, preserving, and enhancing effective rural intercity bus transportation. To identify recent projects and to identify barriers or issues affecting implementation, the research effort included surveys of state rural transit program managers, state rail program managers, and intercity bus carriers. The report includes three parts. Part I contains a review of recent developments affecting the intercity bus industry, an overview of potential funding sources, and a review of barriers to implementation of rural intercity projects. Part II provides strategies for rural intercity service improvements, including methods of identifying intercity carriers and services, planning, program development, operating assistance, capital assistance, marketing assistance, and combining approaches. Each strategy is described, and implementation examples are presented. Part III presents 50 project descriptions based on additional survey interviews with project contacts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 192 page report describes the experiences of the Rural Connection Program (RCP), an attempt to link existing rural public transportation services with those of intercity carriers. The study includes data gathered from 36 of the rural systems participating in the program, and detailed case studies of four systems among these. The RCP has not proven to be a big generator of revenue for the participating systems, and only five systems reported more than 150 riders over the course of the program. There is some evidence that local resources and expertise for marketing may be particular limiting factors on the arrangements. The report should be especially interesting to operators of rural transportation services.
