Book excerpt: This overview of interactive videodisc technology is designed to assist educators in finding the appropriate equipment and software for any specific application. The handbook may also serve as a starting point for many educators who know nothing of the technology and assist them in deciding whether this technology is worth pursuing as an educational tool in specific situations. Although not comprehensive, the listings reflect a good portion of the videodisc-related products available today and the prices provide a good indication of the general price range of specific items. The handbook contains 10 chapters: (1) Introduction to Videodiscs; (2) Overview of Laser Disc Systems; (3) Selecting a Laser Videodisc Player; (4) Video Playback Units; (5) Videodisc Interface Units; (6) Disc Player Peripherals; (7) Videodisc System Packages; (8) Educational Videodisc Software; (9) Interactive Videodisc Authoring Languages; and (10) Videodisc Care and Maintenance. Appendices include directories of laser disc players; television monitors and projects; laser disc interfaces; laser disc peripherals; laser disc system packages; videodisc software (listed by subject area); videodisc mastering options; interactive authoring languages; service information; and videodisc resources, which includes a manufacturer's index. The author is not, nor has ever had an intention of being a “techie. ” Rather, I spent the first decade of my professional life as a high school physics teacher, making occasional uses of technology to further student understanding and to automate my own teaching practices. During my graduate work, my interest in the use of technology continued. Catalyzed, to some extent by the increasing availability of graphical interfaces for computers, the realization struck that the computer was more and more becoming a tool that all teachers could use to support their teaching practice—not simply those with a passion for the technology itself. The rapid changes in the hardware and software available, however, frequently caused me to reflect on the usefulness of technology—if it were to change at such a rapid pace, would anyone, save for those who diligently focused on the development of these tools, be able to effectively use technology in science teaching? Was change to rapid to yield a useful tool for teachers? To address this interest, I examined the nature of science teaching during this century—using the equally fluid notion of “scientific literacy”—which formed the organizing principle for this study. The result is a examination of how technology was used to accomplishing this goal of producing scientifically literate citizens. What was observed is that technology, indeed, consistently came to the service of teachers as they attempted to achieve this goal.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides a unique and notable contribution to the investigation and exemplification of computer literacy in human services education. A significant contribution to the development of the contemporary human services curriculum, this helpful guide introduces the computer literate curriculum, explores the nature of computer literacy and its ramifications for teaching in the human services, and discusses the computer's effect on scholarly thinking. Computer Literacy in Human Services Education is divided into two major sections, the first dealing with teaching about computers and the second addressing the use of computers in teaching. In the first section, the authors introduce the topic of computer literacy in human services education and look at some general issues which have broad implications for the educator. They also explore program-wide curriculum development and the development of individual courses. In the second section, the authors discuss computers as devices which can facilitate both learning and thinking in human services, and suggest that some theories explaining human behavior may also apply to human/computer interaction. Other topics covered in the section are the use of computers in teaching about human services, including Computer Assisted Instruction (CAI), simulations, and interactive video. The volume concludes with an examination of the ways computers can affect the thinking of scholars in teaching and in model and theory building in the human services.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This two-volume work on the development of instruction is planned as a companion to an earlier book - Designing Instructional Systems. The present work continues the micro-design stages of lesson and instructional materials development. Taken together, these two volumes give extensive coverage of practical techniques for the development of instruction. This title draws a distinction between instructional design and instructional development, although some authors seem to use the two terms synonymously. The structure of the content will enable the two volumes to be used conveniently as both initial reading or later reference material.
