Book excerpt: Few Particle Problems in the Nuclear Interaction emerged from the International Conference on Few Particle Problems in the Nuclear Interaction held in Los Angeles, from August 28-September 1, 1972. The aim of the conference was to discuss recent developments in low and medium energy few-particle problems. This included the fields of the nuclear three-body problem; nuclear forces (in particular, three-body forces); symmetries; and the interaction of mesons, leptons, and photons with few-nucleon systems. Special sessions were also devoted to the application of the results and techniques of the few-particle research to the problems of other fields, in particular nuclear structure and astrophysics. The conference was organized into nine plenary sessions and 13 parallel sessions. This volume contains 184 papers presented during the nine sessions on the following topics: the nucleon-nucleon interaction; three-body forces; hypernuclear systems; symmetries; three-body problems; multiparticle reactions; proposed studies of few-nucleon systems with meson factories; few-nucleon systems and leptons, mesons, and photons; and applications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The pion plays an outstanding role in nuclear physics as a generator of the nuclear force and as an important part of the nuclear many-body problem. At the same time, pion beams are used as probes to explore the nucleus and its interactions. As pion physics has matured over the years, a rich and diverse variety of phenomena has been uncovered. The aim of this book is to examine the underlying physical picture behind these phenomena in a systematic and coherent way. The authors emphasize the interplay between physical concepts and experimental facts more than the formal tools, which are presented in a series of appendices. The book is directed towards advanced students as well as research workers.

Book excerpt: A once-subtracted form of the Low equation for the pion-nucleon scattering amplitude is derived, with PCAC used to define the amplitude when one pion is off the mass shell. The static approximation is not made and both the seagull terms and the antinucleon contribution (z-graphs) are retained. The theory is applied to calculate the S-wave amplitudes in the elastic scattering region. Good agreement is found with the phase shift fits to the data when we use mod(g/sub .pi./(4M2)) = 11.69 and 25.5 MeV for the .pi.N sigma-commutator. The implications of this work for the analysis of low-energy elastic scattering of pions from nuclei are discussed. In particular, it is pointed out how this work establishes the presence of a Laplacian term in the pion-nucleus optical potential with a magnitude that is fixed from the value of the sigma-commutator.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Synthesizing the theoretical and experimental advances in pion-nucleon interactions over approximately the last twelve years, the authors offer here a timely account of the hadronic interactions of pions and nucleons and of the structure of nucleons. Because of the hadronic SU3 symmetry, the book also treats the structure of baryons in general, and so contains much material external to the specific field of pion-nucleon interactions. Thus the book's subject can be stated as the hadronic structure of baryons as illustrated particularly by pion-nucleon interaction. Following an introductory discussion of isotopic spin, the authors proceed to chapters that treat low energy pion scattering by nucleons and the photoproduction of pions; forward and fixed momentum transfer dispersion relations; analytic properties of scattering amplitudes; formation of nucleon resonances; symmetries and classification of particles and resonances; current algebra, sum rules, and superconvergence relations; scattering at higher energies; pion-nucleon dynamics; pion-nucleon inelastic scattering; and the form factors of the nucleon and the pion. Each chapter is followed by abundant references to the original literature. The level of the writing is suitable for students at the graduate level, and the presentation is even and self-contained. On balance, the authors have prepared a useful consolidation and review of this difficult and changing area of investigation. Originally published in 1973. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A unified presentation of nuclear and particle physics from an experimental point of view. The first part of the book is devoted to disentangling the substructure of matter, showing that experiments designed to uncover the substructures of nuclei and nucleons have a similar conceptual basis. This leads to the present picture of all matter being built out of a small number of elementary building blocks and a small number of fundamental interactions. The second part then goes on to show how these elementary particles may be combined to build hadrons and nuclei. This introductory textbook is based on lectures held at the University of Heidelberg and, with its numerous exercises with worked answers, is ideally suited for undergraduate courses.

It is found that the dominant mechanism for nucleus-nucleus interactions for incident neon energies as low as 100 MeV/nucleon is the production of charged and/or neutral pions. (Author).

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Threshold Photo and Electroproduction of Pions From Nuclei To find the amplitude from a single nucleon, one usually starts by considering which relativistic Feynman diagrams are important in the particular energy region under consideration. For the case of a purely electromagnetic interaction as in electron scattering, photo or electro disintegration, or Compton scattering, one can use perturbation theory and quantum field theory to give the appropriate Feynman diagrams to a particular order in the coupling constant. However, in photo or electro production of pions, we now have electromagnetic and strong interactions, and since the coupling constant in strong interactions is large, the perturbation expansion in powers of the coupling constant will not con verge. In spite of this fact, the lowest order term in the expansion using pseudovector pion-nuclear coupling, gives results which under cer tain conditions agree very well with experiment and with the low energy theorem derived from the theory of the pcac (partially conserved axial current) Therefore, we will use the lowest order perturbation term as our model for the threshold photo pion production amplitude off of a nucleon. Book excerpt: Nuclear physics is presently experiencing a thrust towards fundamental phy sics questions. Low-energy experiments help in testing beyond today's stan dard models of particle physics. The search for finite neutrino masses and neutrino oscillations, for proton decay, rare and forbidden muon and pion de cays, for an electric dipole moment of the neutron denote some of the efforts to test today's theories of grand unification (GUTs, SUSYs, Superstrings, ... ) complementary to the search for new particles and symmetries in high-energy experiments. The close connections between the laws of microphysics, astrophysics and cosmology open further perspectives. This concerns, to mention some of them, properties of exotic nuclei and nuclear matter, and star evolution; the neutrino and the dark matter in the universe; relations between grand unification and evolution of the early universe. The International Symposium on Weak and Electromagnetic Interactions in Nuclei (W.E.LN. 1986)' held in Heidelberg 1-5 July 1986, in conjunction with the 600th anniversary of the University of Heidelberg, brought together experts in the fields of nuclear and particle physics, astrophysics and cosmol ogy.
