Book excerpt: O atoms and N2 molecules in the outer atmosphere of the Earth collide with spacecraft surfaces and various gases that are released from space vehicles. The high relative velocity of the collisions promotes high reaction probability and large energy transfers, leading to materials degradation and chemiluminescent reactions, which may interfere with the mission of the vehicle. The work presented in this thesis uses sophisticated molecular beam and surface science techniques to study materials degradation and individual reactive and inelastic collisions in an effort to understand the complex chemistry and physics that are characteristic of space vehicle interactions with Earth's upper atmosphere. A new space-durable polymer, polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane polyimide, has been identified. When exposed to atomic oxygen, this polymer forms a protective SiO2 layer on its surface. Beam-surface scattering experiments showed that collision-induced dissociation becomes an important gas-surface process when the translational energy of the incident atom or molecule is greater than 8 eV. Experiments on the dynamics of gas-phase collisions at hyperthermal collision energies found that inelastic collisions may transfer large amounts of energy into internal degrees of freedom. The scattering dynamics of the reactive 16OC product from the 16O( 3P) + C18O → 16OC + 18O reaction were quite unexpected, with 16OC predominantly forward scattered. Experiments on the reactions of O( 3P) with H2O demonstrated the occurrence of a previously unobserved reaction pathway, O(3P) + H2O → HO2 + H, with a barrier determined to be ∼2.6 eV. These studies of hyperthermal processes with molecular beam techniques have enabled us to identify a promising new material and to understand the detailed collision dynamics in model gas-surface and gas-phase systems. In each case, the experiments have revealed new chemical or energy transfer processes that were not considered earlier. These previously unknown processes reveal trends in hyperthermal collisions that will undoubtedly be critical to the planning and design of missions that put space vehicles in contact with the outer reaches of the Earth's atmosphere.

Consequently, new requirements are generated for the understanding of molecular dynamics in exotic conditions. This book illustrates the importance of detailed chemical dynamics and the role it plays in the phenomenology of a number of extreme environments. Each chapter addresses one or more extreme environments, outlines the associated chemical mechanisms of relevance, and then covers the leading edge science that elucidates the chemical coupling. The chapters exhibit a balance between theory and experiment, gas phase, solid state, and surface dynamics, and geophysical and technical environments.

Book excerpt: This publication presents the proceedings of ICPMSE-6, the sixth international conference on Protection of Materials and Structures from Space Environment, held in Toronto May 1-3, 2002. The ICPMSE series of meetings became an important part of the LEO space community since it was started in 1991. Since then, the meeting has grown steadily, attracting a large number of engineers, researchers, managers, and scientists from industrial companies, scientific institutions and government agencies in Canada, U. S. A. , Asia, and Europe, thus becoming a true international event. This year’s meeting is gaining even stronger importance with the resumption of the ISS and other space projects in LEO, GEO and Deep Space. To reflect on these activities, the topics in the program have been extended to include protection of materials in GEO and Deep Space. The combination of a broad selection of technical and scientific topics addressed by internationally known speakers with the charm of Toronto and the hospitality of the organizers brings participants back year after year. The conference was hosted and organized by Integrity Testing Laboratory Inc. (ITL), and held at the University of Toronto’s Institute for Aerospace Studies (UTIAS). The meeting was sponsored by the Materials and Manufacturing Ontario (MMO) and the CRESTech, two Ontario Centres of Excellence; Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR/NL); MD Robotics; EMS Technologies; The Integrity Testing Laboratory (ITL); and the UTIAS.

Book excerpt: The setup of a UHV apparatus with a hyperthermal 0-atom source was completed, and this apparatus is available as infrastructure for in-situ investigations of surfaces modified by hyperthermal atomic-oxygen. The laser-breakdown, hyperthermal atomic-oxygen source has been dramatically improved by the redesigned molecular beam valve. A quartz crystal microbalance has been used to study the erosion kinetics of a number of P0SS-containing and Al203-coated polyimides during exposure to hyperthermal 0 atoms. Crossed-beams experiments in the PI's lab and corresponding theoretical studies by collaborators have revealed the dynamics of 0(3P) reactions with several small molecules that might be found in rocket exhaust gases. Beam-surface scattering experiments, in which hyperthermal 0 and Ar atoms were directed at fluoropolymer surfaces (with and without the presence of VUV light), found synergistic effects involving 0-atom reactions, VUV light, and collision-induced dissociation that may dominate the mechanism of Teflon degradation in low Earth orbit. The dynamics of hyperthermal Ar scattering from graphite showed the risk of using simple models to interpret hyperthermal gas-surface interactions. The exposure of numerous samples to a beam of hyperthermal oxygen atoms confirmed the 0-atom resistance of several new POSS polymers and deepened our understanding of the erosion mechanisms of polymers. The infrastructure to study hyperthermal interactions has been transitioned to a Center for Laboratory Studies of Rocket Plume Chemistry and to the support of two STTR projects aimed at the development of improved coatings for use in space.

Book excerpt: Design and Fabrication of Large Polymer Constructions in Space is a ground-breaking study of the polymeric materials, advanced chemical processes, and cutting-edge technology required in the construction of large polymer-based structures for space, when all steps in the process are carried out in the space environment, whether in orbit, in deep space, or on the surface of a moon, asteroid, or planet. The book begins by introducing the fundamentals and requirements of large constructions and inflatable structures for space. The next section of the book focuses on the utilization of polymeric materials within the space environment, examining the effects on materials (vacuum, plasma, temperature), the possible approaches to polymerization both in space and in orbit, the preparation and structure of polymer composites, and the methods for testing materials and structures in terms of strength, defects, and aging. Three chapters then cover how these materials and techniques might be applied to specific categories of construction, including larger space habitats, supporting space structures, and ground infrastructure. Finally, the financial aspects, the consequences for human space exploitation, and the possible future developments are discussed.Using materials science to push the boundaries of construction for space exploration and exploitation, this book is a unique resource for academic researchers and advanced students across polymer science, advanced materials, chemical engineering, construction, and space engineering, as well as for researchers, scientists and engineers at space agencies, companies and laboratories, involved in developing materials or technology for use in space. This is also of great interest to anyone interested in the role of materials science in the building of large space stations, spacecraft, planetary bases, large aperture antenna, radiation and thermal shields, and repairmen sets. Describes the role of polymers in the construction of large space habitats, supporting space structures, and ground infrastructure Explains polymerization in the Earth’s orbit and in space, covering material specifications, control of curing, and the effects of interaction with the external environment Presents the possible testing methods, including strength evaluation, defect detection, and aging tests of materials and constructions
