In particular, the acceleration of ice streams and thus the increased discharge into the ocean contributes significantly to global sea-level rise. The floating extensions of the ice streams counteract this, but intense basal melting can destabilise the ice shelves. In this thesis, a contribution is made to determine the melt rates of two ice shelves, which are crucial for the future mass losses of the respective ice sheets. In the north, the focus is on the Northeast Greenland Ice Stream (NEGIS) that feeds the Nioghalvfjerdsbrae (79°N Glacier). My analysis of phase-sensitive radar measurements indicates high melt rates near the onset of the ice stream and thus the presence of subglacial melt water, which is associated with the formation of the ice flow. An extensive study in my thesis reveals that the 79°N Glacier has been thinned out considerably in recent years due to extreme melt rates and that large channels have been formed. Melt rates of the Filchner Ice Shelf, Antarctica, which I also determined using phase-sensitive radar measurements, are comparatively low. I was able to attribute significant deviations from remote sensing-derived melt rates to inaccuracies in the used ice flow velocity field. Furthermore, I show that the use of newer velocity fields improves the determination of the melt rates from remote sensing. My analysis of melt rate time series in the vicinity of a channel indicates higher melt rates in the summer as well as several melt events spread over the entire measurement period. Another study combines measurements and numerical modelling and shows that higher melt rates must have occurred in the past than those that were measured. These would lead to the closure of the channel within 250 years. Thus, neither the channel itself nor the present day melt rates endanger the stability of one of the largest Antarctic ice shelves at present.

Book excerpt: The sea ice surrounding Antarctica has increased in extent and concentration from the late 1970s, when satellite-based measurements began, until 2015. Although this increasing trend is modest, it is surprising given the overall warming of the global climate and the region. Indeed, climate models, which incorporate our best understanding of the processes affecting the region, generally simulate a decrease in sea ice. Moreover, sea ice in the Arctic has exhibited pronounced declines over the same period, consistent with global climate model simulations. For these reasons, the behavior of Antarctic sea ice has presented a conundrum for global climate change science. The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine held a workshop in January 2016, to bring together scientists with different sets of expertise and perspectives to further explore potential mechanisms driving the evolution of recent Antarctic sea ice variability and to discuss ways to advance understanding of Antarctic sea ice and its relationship to the broader ocean-climate system. This publication summarizes the presentations and discussions from the workshop.

Book excerpt: Abstract: Accurate knowledge of the Antarctic ice sheet mass balance plays an important role on the global sea level change. Ocean tides (barotropic and baroclinic) and tidal currents cause basal melting and migration of grounding lines, which are all critical to the accurate determination of ice sheet or ice stream mass balance. Ocean tides in the Antarctic Ocean, especially underneath ice shelves or sea ice, are poorly known primarily due to lack of observations with adequate resolution and knowledge of the bathymetry and ice shelf bottom roughness. InSAR has been used to measure the ice sheet mass balance, ice topography, ice stream velocity, and the location of the grounding lines. To properly use InSAR measurements for ice mass balance and because of their high spatial resolution (tens of meters), knowledge of ocean tides underneath the ice shelves needs to be accurately known and with commensurate resolution. Here two-pass differential InSAR (DInSAR) technique is applied for tidal signal modeling underneath the Sulzberger ice shelf, West Antarctica. The fine resolution (60-m) Digital Elevation Model (DEM) over grounded ice and ice shelf, obtained by combining ERS-1/2 tandem InSAR and ICESat laser altimetry, has been used to correct the topography phase from interferograms, resulting in a more accurate time series of vertical deformation measurements. In this study, it is demonstrated for the first time, that observable tidal constituents can be estimated underneath an ice shelf using an InSAR time series. In particular, it is shown that the time series of observed tidal differences from InSAR agrees well with a number of global/regional ocean tide models such as NAO. 99b, TPXO. 6.2, GOT00.2, CATS02.01, and FES2004, with the regional model, CATS02.01, having the best agreement. The technique developed here can be applied to other ice shelf regions where tide modeling is poor in accuracy and resolution.

The results, in the form of profiles over 350 km of trail, made from seismic depth measurements along the Tuto-Century trail and Project 42 trails provide a good representation of surface and subsurface topography. A continuous trace of the ice/bedrock interface was obtained for over 97% of the route traveled, through ice up to 1400 meters thick. The film record obtained by the Scott Polar Research Institute, as a result of providing the Scott Polar Research radar set with continuously moving photographic film to record echo traces, shows a richness of detail (internal structure of the ice sheet) not portrayed by the manual plot. Book excerpt: Processes mediating the interaction between ice sheets with the ocean and with their beds contributes the largest source of uncertainty in projections of global sea-level rise. Yet, accessing the ice-sheet bed and ocean boundary directly are challenging and in most cases prohibitive. As a consequence, our understanding of these environments relies heavily on inference from theory, remote sensing, and the geologic record of past ice-contact deposits. Although these support important insights, critical gaps remain. Many hypotheses are essentially untested and significant uncertainty remains in their applicability and in how remote sensing and geologic data should be interpreted. This dissertations helps to fill that observational gap through a series of case studies examining modern grounding zones, thereby providing new insight into a range of topics including (1) the organization of the subglacial hydrologic system beneath an Antarctic ice stream, (2) ocean circulation to ice-shelf grounding zones, (3) depositional processes at a polar ice-stream grounding zone, (4) how grounding-zone deposits record conditions at ice-sheet margins, (5) controls on glacial erosion, and (6) the capacity for sediment deposition at grounding zones to stabilize ice sheets and glaciers against climate change.
