Many firms struggle with managing the inherently uncertain and ambiguous technology development process, especially with external actors involved, because they may not have or share the same project management practices concerning coordination and control activities. To address this gap, this study examines appropriate project management practices for market-based and science-based partnerships in three large technology-intensive firms. Our results suggest that interorganizational technology development is problematic because firms lack sufficient partner understanding and struggle with aligning their project management practices with those of their partners. To address these problems, we identify project management practices of coordination and control to fit the contingencies of each type of partner collaboration. Our results provide implications for theory and managerial practices related to managing interorganizational technology development.

But how exactly does a knowledge worker influence the success of collaborations, and with what aim does he uses technology? This paper deals precisely with this topic. In order to find answers to these questions, the very first step is to develop the theoretical foundations of knowledge work and inter-organizational collaborations. Subsequently, specific success factors of such collaborations, which are strongly influenced by technology, are related to the skills of a knowledge worker. To this end, the influence of knowledge work and technology on the success of inter-organizational collaborations is identified utilizing a multiple-case study approach, conducted interviews, and qualitative content analysis. It turns out that the abilities of a knowledge worker and the abilities of a company to successfully collaborate with others correlate strongly. Thus, knowledge work(er) directly influences the success of such collaborations. Technology and in particular, the knowledge of interaction, function, and application considerably increases the efficiency and effectiveness of inter-organizational collaborations as well as knowledge work(er).

Advancing sustainable development requires addressing numerous highly interconnected issues across multiple sectors. The interconnections present not only a substantive challenge, but an organizational one as well. Despite widespread agreement on the need for more integrative approaches and strong motivations to implement them, many organizations working on different aspects of sustainable development persistently fail to integrate their work effectively. I examine the puzzle of persistent integration failure in the context of the UN development system (UNDS), which plays an important normative and operational role in guiding development efforts worldwide. Using causal loop diagrams informed by field observations and expert interviews, I present a dynamic explanation of the relationships between various parts of the UNDS and the challenges of coordinating work on sustainable development. I demonstrate how intendedly rational attempts to improve efficiency and performance by UN agencies and the countries that control them inadvertently set off self-reinforcing processes that drive persistent fragmentation and integration failure. Unless these dynamics are accounted for, ongoing attempts to improve integration in the system are likely to fail.
