This means, at varying degrees, negations of, and removals from, the “utopian inspiration”. Humans are able to create unprecedented conditions of life under most ambitious inspirations, but are unable to safeguard their achievements from change, alterations and contradictions. In this, however, another aspect of the utopian realizations is that they ultimately leave room for new utopist thinking and enrolment. As far, indeed, the utopian inspiration draws its vitality from potent civilizational codes, its renewal from ashes is as unavoidable as its self-betrayal through materialization. Book excerpt: This study reviews past and recent developments, until early 2012, affecting the economic, legal and political status of the Palestinians as Arab national minority and citizens of Israel. Their denomination by the de-facto bi-national State of Israel as 'minorities', 'non- Jewish', 'Arab citizens of Israel', 'Arab Israeli sector', 'Muslim Arabs', 'Christian Arabs', including 'Bedouins', 'Circassians' for instance, and distinguishing them from the 'Druze' as a separate political category, will be questioned. This official Zionist categorization will be examined and contrasted with the self-definition by the 'Palestinians/Arabs', citizens of Israel, who constitute around 20% of Israel's total population and of 'the Palestinian people', at large, mainly living in the 'occupied territories' and in the Diaspora. Most of the diverse 'Arab' population of Israel was living in 'Palestine' before the establishment of the state of Israel and many of their descendants still live there. Although the Palestinian/Arab population of Israel represents nearly 1/5 of its total inhabitants, the government allocates less than 7% of the Ministries' budgets to these 'Israeli Arabs'. Lack of development in the Arab local councils is exemplified dramatically, for a population residing mainly in towns and villages, by insufficient educational facilities, poor public transportation, outdated infrastructures, and a low level of industrialization. Poverty, unemployment, and underdevelopment are becoming the hallmark of the 'Arab community'. It is common knowledge that approximately one-half of Arab Children in Israel lives below the poverty line. However, when it comes to the civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights of the Arab minority, the Israeli western-centric establishment reminds its critics, with a sarcastic and ethnocentric complex of superiority, of the deplorable human rights record in the Arab World.

In addition to being a theological concept, unity has become a raison d'etre of various structures that the church has established and developed. All of these structures are supposed to serve the end of unity. However, from time to time some of them deviate from their initial purpose and contribute to disunity. This happens because the structures of the church are not a part of its nature and can therefore turn against it. They are like scaffolding, which facilitates the construction and maintenance of a building without actually being part of it. Likewise, ecclesial structures help the church function in accordance with its nature but should not be identified with the church proper. This book considers the evolution of some of these church structures and evaluates their correspondence to their initial rationale. It focuses on particular structures that have developed in the eastern part of the Christian oecumene, such as patriarchates, canonical territory, and autocephaly, all of which are explored in the more general frame of hierarchy and primacy. They were selected because they are most neuralgic in the life of the Orthodox churches today and bear in them the greatest potential to divide.
