Book Synopsis Anscombe's Intention by : John Schwenkler
Download or read book Anscombe's Intention written by John Schwenkler and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2019 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written against the background of her controversial opposition to the University of Oxford's awarding of an honorary degree to Harry S. Truman, Elizabeth Anscombe's Intention laid the groundwork she thought necessary for a proper ethical evaluation of actions like the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The devoutly Catholic Anscombe thought that these actions made Truman a murderer, and thus unworthy of the university's honor-but that this verdict depended on an understanding of intentional action that had been widely rejected in contemporary moral philosophy. Intention was her attempt to work out that understanding and argue for its superiority over a conception of intention as an inner mental state. Though recognized universally as one of the definitive works in analytic philosophy of action, Anscombe's book is often dismissed as unsystematic or obscure, and usually read through the lens of philosophical concerns very far from her own. Schwenkler's Guide offers a careful and critical presentation of Anscombe's main lines of argument at a level appropriate to advanced undergraduates but also capable of benefiting specialists in action theory, moral philosophy, and the history of analytic philosophy. Further, it situates Intention in a context that emphasizes Anscombe's debts to Aristotle, Aquinas, and Wittgenstein, and her engagement with the work of contemporaries like Gilbert Ryle and R.M. Hare, inviting new avenues of engagement with the ideas of historically important philosophers.

Eager to regroup, the couple moves back to Scotts hometown in Carter, Texas. Its just like dozens of other small towns in that part of the state, with an oil company controlling its school systems, police department, and politics. Not long after they arrive, however, Scotts father, Jack, is found shot dead in his car. The authorities rule it a suicide, and Scott blames himself for his fathers death. He thinks that his blindness must have pushed him over the edge. With her marriage getting worse by the day, Laura begins to have doubts about her father-in-laws suicide. She knows that Jack Sellers was a man who loved himself too much to take his own life. When she questions the deputy sheriff and discovers that he, too, has doubts about the death, she sets out on a mission to catch a killer. Now, Lauras marriage and her life depend on finding a killer that few people believe exists in the small town of Carter. A Blind Intention will help catch Jack Sellers' killer.
Download or read book Strategic Terror written by Beau Grosscup and published by Zed Books Ltd.. This book was released on 2013-07-18 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presenting a global history of aerial bombardment, this book shows how certain European powers initiated aerial bombardment of civilians after World War I, and how it was an instrument of choice in World War II. Beau Grosscup shows that such methods, used initially as a means of terrorizing native populations in Africa and the Middle East, have become the primary form of terrorism in more recent decades. While such 'strategic terror' is not classed as 'terrorism' in the West, this reflects an unwillingness to confront the human costs and immorality of aerial bombardment. Grosscup argues that if terrorism is to be diminished, the role of aerial bombing in sustaining global violence must be recognized.

Book Synopsis Every Human Intention by : Dreux Richard
Download or read book Every Human Intention written by Dreux Richard and published by Pantheon. This book was released on 2021-02-23 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A thoughtful, illuminating exploration of modern Japanese politics and culture through the eyes of an investigative reporter Dreux Richard presents post-Fukushima Japan in three illustrative parts. He follows members of Japan’s Nigerian community, whose struggles with a hostile immigration system lead to the death of a Nigerian immigrant in a Japanese detention center, investigated here for the first time. In Japan’s northernmost city, Richard goes door to door with the region’s youngest census employee, meeting the city’s elderly residents and documenting the stories that comprise the nation’s record-breaking population decline. Finally, he takes us into the offices of energy executives and nuclear regulators, as they fight to determine whether reactors threatened by earthquake faults will be permitted to restart after the Fukushima disaster, a conflict that brings the entire regulatory system to the brink of collapse. Six years in the making, Richard’s perceptive and probing account establishes him as an authority on his subjects, but he remains aware of his status as an outsider and interpreter for his readers. His long-term engagement with the personal lives of his sources revives the expatriate literary tradition of Lafcadio Hearn and Donald Richie, bringing its best qualities into a century where forensic investigation of wrongdoing and compassionate observation of its consequences are equally crucial. Through an exceptional range of approaches to an exceptionally complex society, Every Human Intention provides an understanding of today’s Japan that goes far beyond politics, truisms, and sensational arguments.
