Book Synopsis Innovation in University-Based Intensive English Programs by : Jason Litzenberg
Download or read book Innovation in University-Based Intensive English Programs written by Jason Litzenberg and published by Channel View Publications. This book was released on 2023-12-12 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book considers the past, present and future directions of innovation in US-based Intensive English Programs (IEPs), which provide international students with an immersion-style environment for learning academic English, prior to matriculating into a full-time college or university degree program. IEPs frequently serve as sites for pre-service teacher preparation, curricular experimentation and research, and yet little published work takes a critical look at the advantages and shortcomings of such programs. The chapters in this book provide a nuanced view of this microcosm of the English language teaching industry, demonstrating the various ways that IEPs have impacted and continue to influence the wider fields of Applied Linguistics and TESOL. They emphasize the unique positioning of IEPs within higher education and describe the various ways IEP practitioners can influence their host institutions and beyond.

Book Synopsis Aspects of Language Development in an Intensive English Program by : Alan Juffs
Download or read book Aspects of Language Development in an Intensive English Program written by Alan Juffs and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-03-02 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While there is much in the literature on ESL development, this book is the first of its kind to track the development of specific language abilities in an Intensive English Program (IEP) longitudinally and highlights the implications of this particular study’s findings for future IEP implementation and practice and ESL and SLA research. The volume draws on many years’ worth of data from learners at an IEP at the University of Pittsburgh to explore selected aspects of language development, including lexical, grammatical, speaking, and writing abilities, in addition to placement assessment practices and student learning outcomes. A concluding chapter points to the ways in which these findings can be applied to decision making around IEP curriculum development and the future role of IEPs in higher education more broadly. With its focus on students in IEP settings and the concentration on data from students evaluated over multiple semesters, this volume offers a unique opportunity in which to examine longitudinal developmental patterns of different L1 groups on a variety of measures from the same learners and will be key reading for students and researchers in second language acquisition, English for Academic Purposes, language education, and applied linguistics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited book addresses a range of aspects of internationalization in vocational education and training (VET) in different countries. It considers the impact of internationalization and student mobility on VET at the sectoral, institutional and individual levels as the sector emerges as a key tool for social and structural change in developing nations and as a flexible and entrepreneurial means of growth in developed nations. The book explores not only the effects of the neo-liberal market principle underpinning VET practices and reforms, but importantly considers internationalization as a powerful force for change in vocational education and training. As the first volume in the world that examines internationalization practices in VET, the book provides VET and international education policymakers, practitioners, researchers and educators with both conceptual knowledge and practical insights into the implementation of internationalization in VET.

Download or read book America's 'Great Immigrants' written by Kaba, Amadu Jacky and published by Adonis and Abbey Publishers. This book was released on 2017-09-18 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book highlights the immense contributions that immigrants make to the greatness of the United States, especially during this period of extreme negative views of immigrants and anti-immigrant government policies. It examined the Carnegie Corporation of New York's 'Great Immigrants: the Pride of America' honorees from 2006 to 2015 and found that the 408 honorees during this period came from 87 countries and diverse professions. It also found that among the honorees are 24 Nobel Prize winners. Several of the honorees studied at Columbia University, Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, New York University, Princeton University, Stanford University, the University of California, Berkeley, the University of Cambridge, the University of Chicago, the University of Pennsylvania, the University of Southern California, and Yale University. Available data show that 122 (30 per cent) of these honorees had a total net worth of $113.4 billion. The data also show that America will not be as productive and successful as it is today without the enormous contributions of immigrants. The data equally show that immigrants are among the most important employers and taxpayers in the United States.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How Iraqi refugees navigate life, belonging, and exclusion in America The US invasion of Iraq in 2003 caused the largest forced migration in the Middle East since 1948, with millions of people fleeing to Syria, Jordan, Turkey, Iran, European Union, Australia and the United States. In Iraqi Refugees in the United States, Ken R. Crane explores the uphill climb faced by Iraqi refugees who have sought belonging in a country engaged in an ongoing War on Terror. Drawing on numerous interviews and fieldwork, Crane explores the diverse experiences of a community of Iraqi refugees, showing how they have struggled to negotiate their place in the wake of mass displacement. He highlights the promise of belonging, as well as their many painful encounters with exclusion. Ultimately, Crane provides a window into the complexities of what “becoming American” means for Iraqi refugees, even as they are perceived by other Americans as “security threats.” As debates about immigration and refugee status continue to play out in headlines and the courts, Iraqi Refugees in the United States provides important insight into the global refugee crisis.
