Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do you have to learn everything the hard way? Have you found yourself on the losing end of relationships over and over? Meet your twin. Me. I often thought I should've been a monk. (I didn't think being a nun would be as much fun.) After two relationships ended pitifully, I began to think I didn't have what it takes to navigate a healthy relationship. With that conclusion, I literally built a handicapped accessible home I could grow old in, alone, just me and lots of dogs. I built it, moved in, and then God showed me His plan. His plan included my remarrying. And again, I found myself feeling futile and inadequate when it came to emotional disputes and navigating disagreements. I would either explode or my mind would go numb. I realized folks will spend lots of money writing out and building a business plan for their career, but nobody ever writes out a plan to navigate the most difficult parts of their marriage. My husband and I assessed pretty quickly, and with great intensity, that we would need a plan if our marriage was going to survive. For me, a plan has to be easily manageable or I'm out. This book is just that. Aptly named (other than a lot of funny stories) it consists of simple rules for fighting fair. After all, when you play monopoly or rook, you have rules. Why not have rules for love and war--or ideally to avoid a war? In an uncomplicated fashion (like I prefer) there is a concise list of the rules in the back of the book that you can post on your frig, so you are prepped when the kerfuffle starts to amp up. All you need is a commitment--ideally prior to marriage--to adhere to the rules of "Intense Fellowship" as soon as an unwieldy conflict presents itself. After all, a simple plan is better than living alone with 39 cats.

Book excerpt: From the bestselling author of Science: A History comes the enthralling story of a revolution that shook the world. Seventeenth-century England was racked by civil war, plague and fire; a world ruled by superstition and ignorance. A series of meetings of 'natural philosophers' in Oxford and London saw the beginning of a new method of thinking based on proof and experiment. John Gribbin's gripping, colourful account of this unparalleled time of discovery explores the impact of the Royal Society, culminating with Isaac Newton's revolutionary description of the universe and Edmund Halley's prediction of the return of a comet in 1759. This compelling book shows the triumph not as the work of one isolated genius, but of a Fellowship.

A formidable group of international missiologists are drawn together to explore current reflections on a wide range of issues including: poverty and injustice, environmentalism, secularism, the place of scripture in a pluralist culture, science and faith, liberation theology, oppression and reconciliation, and much more. Kirk's influence and reputation is international, and extends to South America, USA, Eastern Europe, Africa and SE Asia. Latin American mission has been especially enriched by Kirk's innovative thinking on revolutionary politics, contextualisation and holistic mission. This is an indispensable resource of up-to-date missiological reflections for all involved in mission at every level.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Let Me Heal, prize-winning author Kenneth M. Ludmerer provides the first-ever account of the residency system for training doctors in the United States. He traces its development from its nineteenth-century roots through its present-day struggles to cope with new, bureaucratic work-hour regulations for house officers and, more important, to preserve excellence in medical training amid a highly commercialized health care system. Let Me Heal provides a highly engaging, richly contextualized account of the residency system in all its dimensions. It also brilliantly analyzes the mutual relationship between residency education and patient care in America. The book shows that the quality of residency training ultimately depends on the quality of patient care that residents observe, but that there is much that residency training can do to produce doctors who practice in a better, more affordable fashion. Let Me Heal is both a stunning work of scholarship and a highly engaging account of how one becomes a doctor in the United States. It is indispensable reading for those who wish to understand what it means to learn and practice medicine and what is needed to make medical education and patient care in America better. The definitive work on the subject, it is destined to become a classic that will be consulted by readers far into the future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I was born in Taiwan. In 1974, I came to the United States of America for my graduate study. I received two master's degrees, one in music education and the other one in piano performance. My whole life revolved around the piano. It was my mother's will that she dedicated me to serve the Lord with this instrument. At age six, I started learning to play the piano. I was baptized at age twelve. At age fifteen, I served as the Sunday worship service pianist at my local church in Taiwan. The year 1990 was my turning point back to God. I thanked God for the crisis that happened in my life. By his guiding and loving hand, he changed me from a lukewarm Christian to a disciple of Jesus Christ. I have lived in Norman, Oklahoma, for thirty three years as a piano teacher. I am a member of Southern Oklahoma Chinese Baptist Church and have served as choir director, Sunday school teacher, chair of the mission department, and Sunday worship service pianist. In 2004, God led me into Bible Study Fellowship International. Two years later, I was called by God to step out of my comfort zone and into the leadership circle by becoming a group leader where I still serve up to now. Through serving and walking with Jesus, I have experienced so many miracles from our Lord, just as Jesus promised abundant life for his believers. Philippians 3:13""14 (ESV) says, "I do not consider that I have made it my own, but this one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Around 20 percent of Americans fall into the category of “spiritual but not religious.” Yoga has become a ubiquitous pastime for middle-class Westerners. Mindfulness is increasingly incorporated into school curricula, sports programs, and even corporate culture. Hollywood icons and Silicon Valley trendsetters tout the benefits of a “spiritual” life. These developments reflect a widespread turn away from “religion” toward “spirituality.” Yet the nature of this spiritual turn is still poorly understood, and its consequences sorely underappreciated. The Shape of Spirituality brings together leading sociologists to challenge common notions that spirituality is individualistic, privatized, and apolitical—and to make the definitive case for its social and political significance. Contributors examine the sweeping influence of spirituality on a variety of realms, including health care and therapeutic practice, popular culture, civic engagement, public protest, conspiracy culture, and progressive politics. Leveraging cutting-edge quantitative and qualitative data, this authoritative book makes clear that, far from being marginal and inconsequential, spirituality holds profound public importance today.

Book excerpt: Focusing on the "ontological indwelling of God" as the basis and ground of the soul, the author expounds its capacity for spiritual experience, which he describes metaphorically as "being with Christ in paradise." Aspects of mystical experience are briefly discussed, an extended description of the author's own experience is presented, and practical suggestions are offered to the reader for his or her own spiritual enrichment.
