Book Synopsis Between Transcendence and Historicism by : Brian K. Etter
Download or read book Between Transcendence and Historicism written by Brian K. Etter and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2006-06-01 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between Transcendence and Historicism explores Hegel's aesthetics within the larger context of the tradition of theoretical reflection to emphasize its unique ability to account for traditional artistic practice. Arguing that the concept of the ethical is central to Hegel's philosophy of art, Brian K. Etter examines the poverty of modernist aesthetic theories in contrast to the affirmation by Hegel of the necessity of art. He focuses on the individual arts in greater detail than is normally done for Hegel's aesthetics, and considers how the dual constitution of the ethical nature of art can be justified, both within Hegel's own philosophical system and in terms of its relevance to the dilemmas of modern social life. Etter concludes that the arts have a responsibility to represent the goodness of existence, the ideal, and the ethical life in dignifying the metaxological realm through their beauty.

Book Synopsis Music as Thought by : Mark Evan Bonds
Download or read book Music as Thought written by Mark Evan Bonds and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-07-28 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before the nineteenth century, instrumental music was considered inferior to vocal music. Kant described wordless music as "more pleasure than culture," and Rousseau dismissed it for its inability to convey concepts. But by the early 1800s, a dramatic shift was under way. Purely instrumental music was now being hailed as a means to knowledge and embraced precisely because of its independence from the limits of language. What had once been perceived as entertainment was heard increasingly as a vehicle of thought. Listening had become a way of knowing. Music as Thought traces the roots of this fundamental shift in attitudes toward listening in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Focusing on responses to the symphony in the age of Beethoven, Mark Evan Bonds draws on contemporary accounts and a range of sources--philosophical, literary, political, and musical--to reveal how this music was experienced by those who heard it first. Music as Thought is a fascinating reinterpretation of the causes and effects of a revolution in listening.
Book Synopsis Being as Symbol by : Stephen M. Fields, SJ
Download or read book Being as Symbol written by Stephen M. Fields, SJ and published by Georgetown University Press. This book was released on 2000-12-13 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most important theologians of the modern era, Karl Rahner is best known for his efforts to make Christianity credible in light of the intellectual questions of modern culture. Stephen M. Fields, SJ, now explains how Rahner developed his metaphysics as a creative synthesis of Thomism and the modern philosophical tradition. Focusing on Rahner's core concept of the Realsymbol, which posits all beings as symbolic, Fields establishes the place of the Realsymbol in philosophical theories of the symbol. He particularly concentrates on those key aspects of Rahner's metaphysics-his theories of finite realities and language—that have received insufficient attention. By examining a wide range of Rahner's works in the context of twelve medieval, modern, and contemporary thinkers, Fields locates the origins of this seminal thinker's metaphysics to an extent never before attempted. He notes the correlations that exist between the Realsymbol and such work as Aquinas's theory of the sacraments, Goethe's and Hegel's dialectics, Moehler's view of religious language, and Heidegger's aesthetics. Through this analysis, Fields reveals the structural core of Rahner's metaphysics and shows how art, language, knowledge, religious truth, and reality in general are all symbolic. Being as Symbol opens new perspectives on this important thinker and positions him in the broader spectrum of philosophical thought.
Book Synopsis A History of Six Ideas by : W. Tatarkiewicz
Download or read book A History of Six Ideas written by W. Tatarkiewicz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of aesthetics, like the histories of other sciences, may be treated in a two-fold manner: as the history of the men who created the field of study, or as the history of the questions that have been raised and resolved in the course of its pursuit. The earlier History of Aesthetics (3 volumes, 1960-68, English-language edition 1970-74) by the author of the present book was a history of men, of writers and artists who in centuries past have spoken up concerning beauty and art, form and crea tivity. The present book returns to the same subject, but treats it in a different way: as the history of aesthetic questions, concepts, theories. The matter of the two books, the previous and the present, is in part the same; but only in part: for the earlier book ended with the 17th century, while the present one brings the subject up to our own times. And from the 18th century to the 20th much happened in aesthetics; it was only in that period that aesthetics achieved recognition as a separate science, received a name of its own, and produced theories that early scholars and artists had never dreamed of.
Book Synopsis The Genesis of Kant's Critique of Judgment by : John H. Zammito
Download or read book The Genesis of Kant's Critique of Judgment written by John H. Zammito and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1992-08 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this philosophically sophisticated and historically significant work, John H. Zammito reconstructs Kant's composition of The Critique of Judgment and reveals that it underwent three major transformations before publication. He shows that Kant not only made his "cognitive" turn, expanding the project from a "Critique of Taste" to a Critique of Judgment but he also made an "ethical" turn. This "ethical" turn was provoked by controversies in German philosophical and religious culture, in particular the writings of Johann Herder and the Sturm und Drang movement in art and science, as well as the related pantheism controversy. Such topicality made the Third Critique pivotal in creating a "Kantian" movement in the 1790s, leading directly to German Idealism and Romanticism. The austerity and grandeur of Kant's philosophical writings sometimes make it hard to recognize them as the products of a historical individual situated in the particular constellation of his time and society. Here Kant emerges as a concrete historical figure struggling to preserve the achievements of cosmopolitan Aufkl-rung against challenges in natural science, religion, and politics in the late 1780s. More specifically Zammito suggests that Kant's Third Critique was animated throughout by a fierce personal rivalry with Herder and by a strong commitment to traditional Christian ideas of God and human moral freedom. "A work of extraordinary erudition. Zammito's study is both comprehensive and novel, connecting Kant's work with the aesthetic and religious controversies of the late eighteenth century. He seems to have read everything. I know of no comparable historical study of Kant's Third Critique."-Arnulf Zweig, translator and editor of Kant's ;IPhilosophical Correspondence, 1759-1799;X "An intricate, subtle, and exciting explanation of how Kant's thinking developed and adjusted to new challenges over the decade from the first edition of the Critique of Pure Reason to the appearance of the Critique of Judgment."—John W. Burbidge, Review of Metaphysics "There has been for a long time a serious gap in English commentary on Kant's Critique of Judgment; Zammito's book finally fills it. All students and scholars of Kant will want to consult it."—Frederick Beiser, Times Literary Supplement

Download or read book Kant, Herder, and the Birth of Anthropology written by John H. Zammito and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If Kant had never made the "critical turn" of 1773, would he be worth more than a paragraph in the history of philosophy? Most scholars think not. But this text challenges that view by revealing a precritical Kant who was immensely more influential than the one philosophers think they know.
Book Synopsis A Marriage of Philosophy and Music by : Erich Welling
Download or read book A Marriage of Philosophy and Music written by Erich Welling and published by Strategic Book Publishing Rights Agency. This book was released on 2014-04 with total page 919 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How to use philosophy and music to open your horizons and enjoy being yourself, put theory to work, and help you experience personal growth is discussed in A Marriage of Philosophy and Music. It is all about "after." After having a liberal education, you are comfortable in modern culture, and after further education and becoming a specialist in some field, you enjoy using your skills. We learn the ideas and methods of many social cultures and our own chosen specialty, but we often neglect the liberal art of disciplining and enjoying the ideas and methods of our own individuality. This book offers a path toward the education of privacy, with the key words being selection, design, and beauty. The book relates five areas of general human interest: spirituality, philosophy, science, art, and body awareness. The interrelation is accomplished by using personal patterns of experience that are available from philosophy and music. Because of the plurality of subject matters and methods used in philosophy and music, their patterns of discipline are comparable to self-discipline. A Marriage of Philosophy and Music attempts to create a path in this direction, because besides the enjoyment of social culture and personal skills, there is enjoyment in being yourself, which is a neglected liberal art.

Book Synopsis Hegel's Theory of Aesthetic Judgment by : Robert Wicks
Download or read book Hegel's Theory of Aesthetic Judgment written by Robert Wicks and published by Peter Lang Incorporated, International Academic Publishers. This book was released on 1994 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wide-ranging in its philosophical scope, Hegel's Theory of Aesthetic Judgment, critically examines the historical and logical foundations of judgments of beauty in G.W.F. Hegel's philosophy of art. Focusing on the traditional belief that beautiful things display ultimate truth, this study begins with an illustration of how Kantian and Post-Kantian theories of beauty gradually recognized the revelatory function of art. Upon this background, the author shows how Hegel's visionary understanding of beauty assumes that beauty is the experience of rational perfection. Bringing Hegel's theory up-to-date, the work concludes by applying the Hegelian style of artistic evaluation within the postmodern cultural environment.
