Book excerpt: Automatic Text Categorization and Clustering are becoming more and more important as the amount of text in electronic format grows and the access to it becomes more necessary and widespread. Well known applications are spam filtering and web search, but a large number of everyday uses exist (intelligent web search, data mining, law enforcement, etc.) Currently, researchers are employing many intelligent techniques for text categorization and clustering, ranging from support vector machines and neural networks to Bayesian inference and algebraic methods, such as Latent Semantic Indexing. This volume offers a wide spectrum of research work developed for intelligent text categorization and clustering. In the following, we give a brief introduction of the chapters that are included in this book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Extracting content from text continues to be an important research problem for information processing and management. Approaches to capture the semantics of text-based document collections may be based on Bayesian models, probability theory, vector space models, statistical models, or even graph theory. As the volume of digitized textual media continues to grow, so does the need for designing robust, scalable indexing and search strategies (software) to meet a variety of user needs. Knowledge extraction or creation from text requires systematic yet reliable processing that can be codified and adapted for changing needs and environments. This book will draw upon experts in both academia and industry to recommend practical approaches to the purification, indexing, and mining of textual information. It will address document identification, clustering and categorizing documents, cleaning text, and visualizing semantic models of text.

The book offers a detailed introduction to the fundamental theories and methods of text data mining, ranging from pre-processing (for both Chinese and English texts), text representation and feature selection, to text classification and text clustering. It also presents the predominant applications of text data mining, for example, topic modeling, sentiment analysis and opinion mining, topic detection and tracking, information extraction, and automatic text summarization. Bringing all the related concepts and algorithms together, it offers a comprehensive, authoritative and coherent overview. Written by three leading experts, it is valuable both as a textbook and as a reference resource for students, researchers and practitioners interested in text data mining. It can also be used for classes on text data mining or NLP.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Machine Learning is thriving. Every industry is using its techniques in some way to improve their efficiency and revenue. However, the focus on research is not divided equally between all of the different areas and problems that this field can tackle and analyze. Currently, Computer Vision is the one area that is being focused very extensively by researchers and companies alike, and as a result has seen an amazing boost in the recent years. This ranges from the well-known problems of classification that use discriminative models all the way to more novel problems that use generative models such as style transfer, super resolution, and description generation. Yet, some other problems have not been worked on nearly as much as of now. These problems include some Natural Language Processing tasks like Sentence Classification and even Computer Vision problems such as Image Clustering. Each of these tasks has their own set of difficulties and obstructions that need to be tackled before they can be researched properly and used in the industry which is a great driving force for research. Specifically, the case of clustering seems to be interesting to look into as more and more lable-less and unknown data is being generated every day without means to process and analyze them efficiently. We will discuss these problems that have been focused on less throughout the recent years.

Book excerpt: Text Mining: Applications and Theory presents the state-of-the-art algorithms for text mining from both the academic and industrial perspectives. The contributors span several countries and scientific domains: universities, industrial corporations, and government laboratories, and demonstrate the use of techniques from machine learning, knowledge discovery, natural language processing and information retrieval to design computational models for automated text analysis and mining. This volume demonstrates how advancements in the fields of applied mathematics, computer science, machine learning, and natural language processing can collectively capture, classify, and interpret words and their contexts. As suggested in the preface, text mining is needed when “words are not enough.” This book: Provides state-of-the-art algorithms and techniques for critical tasks in text mining applications, such as clustering, classification, anomaly and trend detection, and stream analysis. Presents a survey of text visualization techniques and looks at the multilingual text classification problem. Discusses the issue of cybercrime associated with chatrooms. Features advances in visual analytics and machine learning along with illustrative examples. Is accompanied by a supporting website featuring datasets. Applied mathematicians, statisticians, practitioners and students in computer science, bioinformatics and engineering will find this book extremely useful.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the advent of social networking and mobile computing, there has been an enormous increase in the amount of data over the Internet. And, a significant portion of this data is in text form. That being the case, an effective automated system needs to be developed that can perform classification of text data so that knowledge can be efficiently extracted from the data. However, text data is usually multi-label in nature. In other words, a single text document may be associated with multiple class labels simultaneously. Here, we propose a solution to the problem of multi-label text classification. There are a number of challenges when classifying multi-label text data. For example, to determine how many labels should be associated with a particular text data instance. Another challenge associated with text data is its high and sparse dimensionality. Finally, we also need to consider the highly shared feature space across multiple class labels that makes it difficult to find features that are specific to any single class label.
