This book was released on 2018-04-12 with total page 1025 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We live in an age in which expressive, informational, and technological subject matter are becoming increasingly important. Intellectual property is the primary means by which the law seeks to regulate such subject matter. It aims to promote innovation and creativity, and in doing so to support solutions to global environmental and health problems, as well as freedom of expression and democracy. It also seeks to stimulate economic growth and competition, accounting for its centrality to EU Internal Market and international trade and development policies. Additionally, it is of enormous and increasing importance to business. As a result there is a substantial and ever-growing interest in intellectual property law across all spheres of industry and social policy, including an interest in its legal principles, its social and normative foundations, and its place and operation in the political economy. This handbook written by leading academics and practitioners from the field of intellectual property law, and suitable for both a specialist legal readership and an intelligent but non-specialist legal and non-legal readership, provides a comprehensive account of the following areas: - The foundations of IP law, including its emergence and development in different jurisdictions and regions; - The substantive rules and principles of IP; and - Important issues arising from the existence and operation of IP in the political economy.

Book Synopsis Intellectual Property Law and Practice of the United Arab Emirates by : Peter W. Hansen
Download or read book Intellectual Property Law and Practice of the United Arab Emirates written by Peter W. Hansen and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2009-09-23 with total page 888 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The GDP of the United Arab Emirate's (UAE) economy is reported to have grown 35% in 2006, making it one of the fastest growing economies in the world. This has attracted unprecedented levels of foreign investment, which has resulted in efforts to bring its intellectual property laws into line with international standards. However, reliable copies of the IP laws and regulations of the UAE (which are written in Arabic) can be difficult to obtain, much less understand, for most Western attorneys. Quality English translations, interpretations of the law, and commentaries on practice are almost non-existent. Intellectual Property Law and Practice of the United Arab Emirates is the first book to address these problems by providing reliable copies of the Arabic laws and regulations, intelligent translations of them, and a discussion of issues arising in the application and practice of the law. This book will give practitioners the ability to better assess the IP problems they face and to devise the best possible strategic solutions.
Book Synopsis Protecting Intellectual Property in the Arabian Peninsula by : David Price
Download or read book Protecting Intellectual Property in the Arabian Peninsula written by David Price and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-13 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work examines the endeavours of the Arabian Peninsula States – namely the Gulf Cooperation Council member States of Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar Saudi Arabia and the UAE, as well as Jordan and Yemen as prospective GCC members – in establishing national intellectual property protection regimes which both meet their international treaty obligations and are also congruent with their domestic policy objectives. It uses the WTO’s TRIPS Agreement of 1995 as the universal benchmark against which the region’s laws are assessed. The challenges faced by the States in enforcing their intellectual property laws receive particular attention. Protecting Intellectual Property in the Arabian Peninsula considers the changing nature of the States’ intellectual property laws since 1995. It argues that the decade immediately following the TRIPS Agreement was marked by a period of foreign forces shaping or influencing the character of the States’ intellectual property legislative regimes, primarily through multilateral or bilateral trade-based agreements. The second and current decade, however, see a significant shift away from foreign influences and a move towards domestic and regional imperatives and initiatives taking over. The work also examines regional initiatives for the protection of traditional knowledge and cultural heritage, as areas of intellectual property which fall outside the parameters of the TRIPS Agreement, but which are of significant concern to the States and other developing countries, and to which they are giving increasing attention in terms of providing proper protection.

Book Synopsis Intellectual Property and Sustainable Development by : Ricardo Meléndez-Ortiz
Download or read book Intellectual Property and Sustainable Development written by Ricardo Meléndez-Ortiz and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2009 with total page 491 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ÔThis is a thought-provoking book with relevance to a broad readership, especially IP practitioners with a strong international focus.Õ Ð Australian Intellectual Property Law Bulletin Intellectual property (IP) has gained an unprecedented importance in the new world of globalization and the knowledge economy. However, experience, as well as cyclical attitudes toward IP, show that there is no universal model of IP protection. This comprehensive book considers new and emerging IP issues from a development perspective, examining recent trends and developments in this area. Presenting an overview of the IP landscape in general, the contributing authors subsequently narrow their focus, providing wide-ranging case studies from countries across Africa, Asia and Latin America on topical issues in the current IP discourse. These include the impact of IP on the pharmaceutical sector, the protection of life forms and traditional knowledge, geographical indications, access to knowledge and public research institutes, and the role of competition policy. The challenges developing countries face in the TRIPS-Plus world are also explored in detail. The diverse range of contributions to this thought-provoking book offer a wide variety of alternative perspectives on and solutions for the controversial issues surrounding the role of IP within sustainable development. As such, it will prove a stimulating read for government policy-makers, trade negotiators, academics, lawyers and IP practitioners in general, UN and other intergovernmental agencies, development campaigners and aid agencies, environmentalist groups and university students.
