Book excerpt: Numerous people came in this world, performed extra-ordinary deeds for the welfare of humanity. After passing away, they were remembered for their noble acts. Nonetheless, there are a few who did such reformative actions in religious, social, literary and political spheres, whose influence would remain untarnished forever. They are in fact sent for the guidance of human beings, for the inculcation and development of moral conduct and character of human beings, for the promotion of tolerance, respect for humanity, social justice and equality. These personalities, because of their intellectual and spiritual might and impact, purified manifested as well as inner selves of people and guided them in all spheres of life. One such figure is Sultan-ul-Arifeen Hadrat Sultan Bahoo (1629-1691). He, through his teachings and conduct, guided people towards recognition of one s self as well as Divine Unison with the Creator. The MUSLIM Institute in collaboration with the IRD organised a seminar titled Intellectual Dimensions of Hadrat Sultan Bahoo and Global Peace on Tuesday May 07, 2013 at Iqbal Hall, International Islamic University, Faisal Mosque Campus, Islamabad. This Seminar is an academic contribution in the present era, when the global world particularly Muslim community is facing challenges of religious dissension and intolerance. One of the major concerns for the Muslim world is growing tensions and conflicts between different schools of thought and sects. At a time when the Muslim Ummah needs to stand together in solidarity to face different internal and external challenges, this intra-faith discord is most unfortunate. The seminar aimed at highlighting the Sufi teachings, thoughts and intellectual dimensions of Hadrat Sultan Bahoo, and also the role he played in guiding people from materialism to spiritual ascension, from worldly joys to inner contentment and also in making man aware of one s real status. The seminar was held in two sessions in which eminent scholars and literary figures shared their views and presented their papers on the subject. This book is compilation of essays and statements presented.

Book excerpt: Abyat-e-Bahoo (Sultan Bahoo's Sufi Poems) is considered a master piece amongst the seekers of Sufi teachings, written originally in Saraiki (dialect of Punjabi) and now exquisitely translated into English by Dr. Z. A. Awan. The reality of soul and spirit is described in most eloquent manner for the people seeking Sufi path and spiritual satisfaction of the inner most. There are sections in the book which describe key concepts of spiritualism which will also elucidate Wahdaniyat (Oneness), Risalat (the messenger's following is obedience to Allah), and other perquisites for awakening your soul-sprit to be His best friend i.e. Faqr-Faqeer (code of contentment by a contended person): Dhikr-Fikr (Remembrance, Contemplation, Love of Allah), Murshid-Mureed , Language-literature. These concepts will certainly facilitate the respected readers in understanding these deliberations. This is important for a reader to be fully familiar with terminology and concepts of Abyat . The reason for this renewed format about Sultan Bahoo's valuable contribution (Abyat) is to develop an invigorating interest for international academia.

Book excerpt: Intentionally or otherwise, the world today is engulfed in a strange intellectual strife and insoluble mental enigma. To overcome this conflict, we must take practical steps toward creating a true conception of God in the minds of the people and to impress on their memories the necessity of religion, enabling religion and spiritualism to attain once more the preeminence that they previously enjoyed. In pursuit of that renaissance of religion, Irfan presents the exposition of two secret, rare, and closely guarded sciences and offers a vivid description of their philosophy. The first focuses on knowledge of concentration on the personal name of God (Allah), centralizing human thought and occult spiritual energies on one point to attain willpower and spiritual strength. The second invokes the inmates of the graves, calling on departed souls for wisdom. Irfan demonstrates that humanity’s worldly life is not everything; rather, there is a world after death, and dying is just a part of life. It seeks to remove the fear of death and reveal it to be a beloved entity. Written by Faqeer Noor Muhammad in the early twentieth century, this spiritual study provides a valuable compendium and unique record of religion, spiritualism, and the secrets of Sufiism.

Common Muslims consider that the requirement of this most important pillar of Islam is fulfilled just by declaring “La illaha ilAllahoo” i.e. “No one is worthy of worship but Allah” by tongue and superficially believing that Allah is the Creator, Master and Sustainer of every creation and only He should be worshipped. They neither know the essence of Tauheed nor verify it inwardly. The poetry of Sultan Bahu has inspired Sufis of the Punjab for countless generations, embodying essential characteristics of the mystical tradition, especially in its emphasis on complete and unrestricted devotion to God coupled with skepticism toward the formal, legalistic, and institutionalized elements of organized religion.

Filled with hurdles yet easy for those who are born pure and those who choose. It is the choices and not always the actions as they could be deceptive. Sufism is the spiritual and mystical aspect of Islam. The esoteric cosmos has every spiritual blessing, notion and trial. In the universe of Sufism, the destination is being One with the Divine Essence (tawhid) and the dear friend and leader on this path is the spiritual guide. Motivation and power to accomplish comes from loving Allah only, as Sultan Bahoo has famously said, “Only Allah! Everything other than Allah is lust.” The names Allah and Mohammad (Ism-e-Allah Zaat and Ism-e-Mohammad) are sustenance which strengthen the very soul of man. After all it is the journey of soul. Deep respect embedded in the heart for the family of Prophet Mohammad (peace be upon him) is like Noah’s Arc and the sacred Companions are guiding stars. The Mohammadan Assembly is the determining factor declaring one worthy to embark on the quest of Sufism or to demote or worse to forever halt. Wolves, brigands and the negative powers that drive one away are Satan, innerself (an-nafs) and the mortal world. Sharia is the door into this esoteric world. This journey of gnosis has its own set of guidelines. These can come in the form of inspiration, unveiling, waham (inward conversation with Hoo ھُو) and ilm-e-dawat (communication with sacred souls of shrines). This book is all and MORE! A must read for every spiritual traveller. It outlines principal trends of the main Sufi orders in India, the profiles and teachings of the famous and less known saints, and the development of pilgrimage to their tombs in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. A detailed discussion of the interaction of the Hindu mystic tradition and Sufism shows the polarity between the rigidity of the orthodox and the flexibility of the popular Islam in South Asia.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on insights from theoretical engagements with borders and subalternity, Beyond Religion in India and Pakistan suggests new frameworks for understanding religious boundaries in South Asia. It looks at the ways in which social categories and structures constitute the bordering logics inherent within enactments of these boundaries, and positions hegemony and resistance through popular religion as an important indication of wider developments of political and social change. The book also shows how borders are continually being maintained through violence at national, community and individual levels. By exploring selected sites and expressions of piety including shrines, texts, practices and movements, Virinder S. Kalra and Navtej K. Purewal argue that the popular religion of Punjab should neither be limited to a polarised picture between formal, institutional religion, nor the 'enchanted universe' of rituals, saints, shrines and village deities. Instead, the book presents a picture of 'religion' as a realm of movement, mobilization, resistance and power in which gender and caste are connate of what comes to be known as 'religious'. Through extensive ethnographic research, the authors explore the reality of the complex, dynamic and contested relations that characterize everyday material and religious lives on the ground. Ultimately, the book highlights how popular religion challenges the borders and boundaries of religious and communal categories, nationalism and theological frameworks while simultaneously reflecting gender/caste society.

Book excerpt: Muhammad's was a life of almost unparalleled historical importance; yet for all the iconic power of his name, the intensely dramatic story of the prophet of Islam is not well known. In The First Muslim, Lesley Hazleton brings him vibrantly to life. Drawing on early eyewitness sources and on history, politics, religion, and psychology, she renders him as a man in full, in all his complexity and vitality. Hazleton's account follows the arc of Muhammad's rise from powerlessness to power, from anonymity to renown, from insignificance to lasting significance. How did a child shunted to the margins end up revolutionizing his world? How did a merchant come to challenge the established order with a new vision of social justice? How did the pariah hounded out of Mecca turn exile into a new and victorious beginning? How did the outsider become the ultimate insider?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a very old book written by Syed Khaja Sadat Hussain Shah Biabani with the title 'Limat Biabani' about the advices and discourses of his spiritual master Hazrat Syed Shah Ghulam Afzal Biabani and the first time I have translated this book into English. This translation of the most ancient and celebrated Urdu book on Sufi'ism will, I hope, be found useful not only by the number of students familiar with the subject at first hand, but also by many readers. This is a small book in which there are advises and instructions, especially available for Taleb (student) and it refers to a person who is committed to a Murshid (spiritual master) in a Tariqa (spiritual path) of Sufism and it is also known as a Salik (Arabic: سَالِك‎), a mureed is an initiate into the mystic philosophy of Sufism and all these details of advices by the spiritual master Hazrat Syed Shah Ghulam Afzal Biabani are added in this book and also in this book there are some great achievements which are not yet known to the general person are published in a very interesting style so for this reason the readers will find great interest and attention in this matter. From the above facts and details, if the readers will starts reading this book's first page and will not stop its reading till they will reach its last page as in this book there are some interesting events and as well as other great miracles and endeavours of holy saint are added and this holy saint to have passed away from the world some 100 years ago. Even though this is small book, but due to its importance it is so great due to coverage of many interesting events and positive information in it so it is like an ocean of knowledge and information of holy saint and who have passed away from the world upon doing their great endeavours and many hard tasks for the preaching and propagation work of Islam in the Deccan (South India) area so this book is small one but it will present the ocean of knowledge and information for the guidance of people towards the right path of Islam. This book is edited and formatted as per the great book 'Muslim saints and Mystics' (Tadhkirtal Aliyah by Farid al din Attar) which is very famous in the Western world among the English knowing persons. So for this reason there will be some small differences in it while comparing with the Urdu books and its literature. The aim of this magazine is to present in the Western world where there is great search and demand of the books of Sufism and biographies of holy saints who lived and spent their entire lives for the preaching and propagation of Islamic religion in all corners of the world as per tradition and practice of Allah's last prophet. To write about this great Sufi master is not only it is difficult and but it is very hard task as he was not only a great pious personality of his time in the Warangal area, but he was also a great spiritual master who had a large number of disciples at that time in the Deccan area and his teaching and preaching which deals with the Islamic code of living. So in brief he was the great Saint of the Hyderabad State of his time in the southern region of India and who did many great endeavours for the preaching and propagation of Islam in Qazipet Sharif and in and around Hyderabad and its expansion to other adjoining and distant territories and there was no such personality during his time.
