Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deryn Watson and David Tinsley The topic of the conference, integrating infonnation technology into education, is both broad and multi-facetted. In order to help focus the papers and discussion we identified 7 themes: • Current developments in society and education influencing integration; • Teachers, their roles and concerns; • Learners, their expectations of and behaviour in an integrated environment; • Developments and concerns in the curriculum; • Successes and failures in existing practice; • Organisation and management of integrated environments; • Identification of social and political influences. Each author was invited to focus on one theme, and these remained strands throughout as can be seen from the short papers and focus group reports. The first and most significant concern therefore was to be clear about our notions of integration; what do we mean and how is this relevant? Our keynote paper from Cornu clearly marked out this debate by examining the notion of integration and alerting us to the fact that as long as the use of IT is still added to the curriculum, then integration has not yet begun.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The advent of new telecommunications technologies - and a growing recognition of their potential for meeting educational needs - has raised many questions about how to integrate telecommunications with existing educational programs. But there is much confusion among educators about where to begin and how to proceed: what skills and experience are required? How should costs be projected, allocated, and offset? How is telecommunications-based education aligned with the current structure and mission of an institution? What standards of quality should be applied? In this book the authors offer nontechnical professionals a comprehensive guide to the process of integrating, implementing, and maintaining telecommunications-based education in their institutions and organizations. Reaching Learners Through Telecommunications offers practical advice to novice and experienced managers on every phase of administering a telecommunications-based education program, including analyzing the appropriateness of telecommunications-based education for the individual institution, determining typical expenditures and revenue sources for telecommunications-based educational programs - using one of the master budget formats provided in the book, creating a marketing strategy that successfully integrates telecommunications into the current educational marketplace and building a comprehensive resource information base of publications, associations, conferences, and agencies. This book will prove to be a valuable resource for managers of educational telecommunications systems; deans and directors of continuing higher education; administrators of distance education and postsecondary education programs; educators atthe primary, secondary, and postsecondary levels; business professionals in private and public industry; and business and education consultants.

It offers insights on current methodological principles in ESP in both academic and professional contexts, drawing on authentic teaching and learning situations, and analyses best practice guidelines. Part I begins with ESP pedagogical principles and technological practice in order to focus on its two main branches: English for Academic Purposes, which includes linguistic skills and students’ needs, and English for Occupational Purposes, specifically looking at Business, Medical and Translators courses. This book is a great resource for ESP researchers, educators and students, because it provides case studies of how ICTs can be used in English for multiple purposes. Authors present their experiences of integrating tools into their instructions, with each chapter contributing unique pedagogical implications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Education systems in under-resourced environments face several challenges, some of them exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. A possible way to address some of the challenges is to apply information and communication technologies. However, effectively integrating technology into education systems is a complex task. In this paper, factors contributing to successful integration of technology in education are explored, with a focus on under-resourced contexts. Case studies of successful technology implementation in education systems are discussed and analyzed to identify the factors that drive success. The analysis is framed using the reform strategy offered by The World Development Report 2018 (Learning to Realize Education's Promise). This is expected to provide policymakers and practitioners a way to align their education technology initiatives and strategies with the larger education reform agenda. Key lessons identified from the analysis are as follows. First, it is necessary to articulate what precisely does the technology intervention change/enable. Second, it is important to better understand the context to develop technologies and implementation strategies that fit the operating context. Third, it is essential to regularly monitor and evaluate programs and to feed that information into continuously improving design and implementation. Fourth, through the entire cycle of technology implementation, stakeholders must be consulted, understood, and empowered. However small the intervention, realizing the potential of technology tools in education requires keeping in mind the big picture offered by these lessons.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book delineates strategies of mobile technology integration in local schools around the world. The pool of teacher participants consists of 93 teachers from 46 countries, including Argentina, Bolivia, Cambodia, Colombia, Costa Rica, Estonia, Guatemala, Honduras, India, Jordan, Latvia, Mali, Mongolia, Nepal, Nicaragua, Nigeria, Senegal and Venezuela. Impacting the Digital Divide shares powerful stories of educators around the world integrating real world technologies to support teaching and learning. Many of these teachers live and work in regions where resources are limited, yet they offer a perspective of innovation and engagement. Inspired by their participation in the US Department of States Teaching Excellence and Achievement (TEA) program, the teachers and administrators in local schools have implemented strategies using mobile technologies to support active learning environments and teacher professional development. While barriers of limited Internet availability, lack of electricity, and a paucity of digital devices in schools are certainly present in the TEA educators experiences, they have found ways to maximise use and productivity by employing digital mobile devices (most often, cell phones). Access to mobile phones for teachers, school administrators, parents and even students continues to increase in most countries, and the ingenuity and determination of these educators challenges those passionate about meaningful learning to energetically harness these tools for optimal educational experiences. Impacting the Digital Divide provides honest examples of educators around the world bridging technological inequities in order to better prepare students for the digital age.
