Book Synopsis Transport, Land-Use and the Environment by : Yoshitsugu Hayashi
Download or read book Transport, Land-Use and the Environment written by Yoshitsugu Hayashi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coordination of land use and transport is one of the most important issues in urban planning from the viewpoint of transport infrastructure supply and amenity in urban space. There has been, therefore, much research conducted in the fields of empirical analysis and theoretical and mathematical modelling of the mechanisms of land use-transport interaction. The members of the Transport and Land Use SIG (Special Interest Group) of the WCTRS (World Conference on Transport Research Society) have conducted extensive research in these fields. Leading on from the activities of ISGLUTI (International Study Group on Land Use-Transport Interaction) chaired by Dr. Vernon Webster, its output was published as a book "Land Use-Transport Interaction / Policies and Models". Concurrently with this ongoing research, energy consumption in the transport sector has been increasing rapidly and become a crucial issue from the viewpoint of global environmental conservation. An emerging research need is to examine and structurally identify the mechanisms of the influence of land use-transport interaction on energy consumption and environmental damage, both locally and globally. The SIG held a seminar in December 1993 in Blackheath, Australia which was the first meeting where world class land use-transport experts gathered to discuss the above topic, covering fact finding, scenario analysis and modelling. This book contains selected papers from the seminar. The Australian Government, CSIRO (Australia) and the Asahi Glass Foundation (Japan) supported the seminar. The book was edited with an enormous and patient help by Dr. Omar Osman at Nagoya University.
Book Synopsis Institutional Barriers to Sustainable Transport by : Carey Curtis
Download or read book Institutional Barriers to Sustainable Transport written by Carey Curtis and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-06-03 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a world seeking to tackle global environmental problems such as climate change, the importance of local and national institutional change to deal most effectively with these issues is critical. This book presents an investigation of the institutional barriers preventing the development of a new vision for urban transport compatible with these realities and in those terms 'sustainable'. Through an examination of transport planning in Australia, the book challenges conventional wisdom by showing, through original research, how 'car dependence' is as much an institutional as a technical phenomenon. The authors' case studies in three metropolitan cities show how transport policy has become institutionally fixated on a path dominated by private, road-based transport and how policy systems become encrusted around investment to accommodate private cars, erecting an impenetrable barrier against more sustainable mobility and accessibility solutions. Representing a new approach to understanding transport policy, this book brings sophisticated political-institutional analysis to what has traditionally been the domain of engineering and technology. The authors connect the empirical content to this theory and the issue of sustainability making the findings applicable to most cities of the developed world, and to fields beyond transport planning. A strategy and program of action is outlined to take advantage of changing public perceptions and aimed at creating a new vision for urban transport.

Book Synopsis Governing Public-Private Partnerships by : Joshua Newman
Download or read book Governing Public-Private Partnerships written by Joshua Newman and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2017-06-26 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Governments around the world are clamouring to engage the private sector in order to build infrastructure and deliver public services. However, the role of the state in managing new relationships with companies is often murky. Is the government a slow and wasteful bureaucracy that must be held at bay or is it a necessary authority? Assessing the appropriate role for governments within these partnerships and the factors that lead to their success or failure, Governing Public-Private Partnerships delves into two examples of collaborative projects in urban transportation: Vancouver’s Canada Line and the Sydney Airport Rail Link. Through personal interviews with CEOs, senior bureaucrats, and politicians, Joshua Newman compares the strategies pursued by an active and shrewd provincial government in British Columbia with the more hands-off state government in New South Wales, Australia. By supporting networks of players in the transportation game, actively seeking lessons from international experience, and innovating responses to novel policy problems, the public sector was able to lead the Canada Line partnership to operational success. In Sydney, however, the unwillingness of the state government to manage the partnership resulted in a sluggish Airport Link that, after sixteen years in operation, still has not met its original expectations. At a time of renewed interest in private involvement with public services, Governing Public-Private Partnerships provides an in-depth look into how the state can – and must – remain involved.

Book Synopsis Transportation for Livable Cities by : Vukan Vuchic
Download or read book Transportation for Livable Cities written by Vukan Vuchic and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-08 with total page 562 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The twenty-first century finds civilization heavily based in cities that have grown into large metropolitan areas. Many of these focal points of human activity face problems of economic inefficiency, environmental deterioration, and an unsatisfactory quality of life—problems that go far in determining whether a city is "livable." A large share of these problems stems from the inefficiencies and other impacts of urban transportation systems. The era of projects aimed at maximizing vehicular travel is being replaced by the broader goal of achieving livable cities: economically efficient, socially sound, and environmentally friendly. This book explores the complex relationship between transportation and the character of cities and metropolitan regions. Vukan Vuchic applies his experience in urban transportation systems and policies to present a systematic review of transportation modes and their characteristics. Transportation for Livable Cities dispels the myths and emotional advocacies for or against freeways, rail transit, bicycles, and other modes of transportation. The author discusses the consequences of excessive automobile dependence and shows that the most livable cities worldwide have intermodal systems that balance highway and public transit modes while providing for pedestrians, bicyclists, and paratransit. Vuchic defines the policies necessary for achieving livable cities: the effective implementation of integrated intermodal transportation systems.
