Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume constitutes the proceedings of the 12th British National Conference on Databases (BNCOD-12), held at Surrey, Guildford in July 1994. The BNCOD conferences are thought as a platform for exchange between theoreticians and practitioners, where researchers from academia and industry meet professionals interested in advanced database applications. The 13 refereed papers presented in the proceedings were selected from 47 submissions; they are organized in chapters on temporal databases, formal approaches, parallel databases, object-oriented databases, and distributed databases. In addition there are two invited presentations: "Managing open systems now that the "Glashouse" has gone" by R. Baker and "Knowledge reuse through networks of large KBs" by P.M.D. Gray.
Book Synopsis Multimedia Database in Perspective by : Peter M.G. Apers
Download or read book Multimedia Database in Perspective written by Peter M.G. Apers and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last decade, multimedia has emerged as a major research and de velopment area. Pushed by advanced technology like huge-capacity storage de vices, fast networks, and powerful work stations, new applications have arisen. Many definitions of multimedia systems exist, one of them being computer sys tems that support interactive use of at least one of the following information sources: graphics, image, voice, sound, and video. These systems have caused a boom in the world of entertainment, but also in other business areas great opportunities for novel products and services are available. The size of multi media data is often huge, and the storage of huge amounts of data is a task normally allocated to database management systems. Although some modern database management systems offer facilities to support development of multi media applications, many problems related to multimedia support are still not well understood. This book reports on research efforts to solve some of these problems. An in troductory knowledge of databases, and also of operating systems and network technology is assumed. The book is very suitable as material for courses at senior or graduate level, but also for upgrading the skills of computer scientists working on database management systems, multimedia systems or applications. The book consists of four parts. Part I is called "Requirements for a Mul timedia Database" and comprises chapters one to three. Chapter one presents an outline of the book.

Book Synopsis Balanced Automation Systems II by : Luis M. Camarinha-Matos
Download or read book Balanced Automation Systems II written by Luis M. Camarinha-Matos and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 534 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: xiv box for Balanced Automation, research in this area is still young and emerging. In our opinion, the development of hybrid balanced solutions to cope with a variety of automation levels and manual approaches, is a much more challenging research problem than the search for a purely automatic solution. Various research activities described in this book illustrate some of these challenges through the development proposals, assisting tools, and initial results. In certain chapters however, the balancing aspects are not yet achieved in the research area, but their inclusion in this book is intended to give a broader and more comprehensive perspective of the multiple areas involved. One important aspect to be noticed is the extension and application of the concept of balanced automation to all areas of the manufacturing enterprise. Clearly, the need for a "balanced" approach is not restricted to the shop floor components, rather it applies to all other areas, as illustrated by the wide spectrum of research contributions found in this book. For instance, the need for an appropriate integration of multiple systems and their perspectives is particularly important for the implantation of virtual enterprises. Although both the BASYS'95 and the BASYS'96 conferences have provided important contributions, approaches, and tools for the implantation of balanced automation systems, there are a number of areas that require further research: .
Book Synopsis Data Warehousing and Web Engineering by : Becker, Shirley
Download or read book Data Warehousing and Web Engineering written by Becker, Shirley and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2001-07-01 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Data Warehousing and Web Engineering covers two pertinent topics that are continuously advancing the effective utilization and management of information technology applications. One objective of this book is to provide a forum for researchers and practitioners to share research about technical and managerial issues associated with data warehousing and mining. The other focus of this book is the concept of Web Engineering, as it addresses how the originally intended use of the Web as a distributed system for knowledge-interchange seems to disappear, compared to the increasing number of e-Commerce Web applications. The Web as a global point of sale seems to be very promising but obviously suffered from its heritage ? the coarse-grained implementation model, which makes it harder and harder to develop, run and maintain still growing E-Commerce applications. Consequently, Web Engineering concepts are applied to Web-Based E-Commerce applications.
Book Synopsis Entity-Relationship Approach - ER '93 by : Ramez A. Elmasri
Download or read book Entity-Relationship Approach - ER '93 written by Ramez A. Elmasri and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1994-07-28 with total page 550 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph is devoted to computational morphology, particularly to the construction of a two-dimensional or a three-dimensional closed object boundary through a set of points in arbitrary position. By applying techniques from computational geometry and CAGD, new results are developed in four stages of the construction process: (a) the gamma-neighborhood graph for describing the structure of a set of points; (b) an algorithm for constructing a polygonal or polyhedral boundary (based on (a)); (c) the flintstone scheme as a hierarchy for polygonal and polyhedral approximation and localization; (d) and a Bezier-triangle based scheme for the construction of a smooth piecewise cubic boundary.

Book Synopsis Visual Database Systems 3 by : Stefano Spaccapietra
Download or read book Visual Database Systems 3 written by Stefano Spaccapietra and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-06-05 with total page 435 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Both the way we look at data, through a DBMS, and the nature of data we ask a DBMS to manage have drastically evolved over the last decade, moving from text to images (and to sound to a lesser extent). Visual representations are used extensively within new user interfaces. Powerful visual approaches are being experimented for data manipulation, including the investigation of three dimensional display techniques. Similarly, sophisticated data visualization techniques are dramatically improving the understanding of the information extracted from a database. On the other hand, more and more applications use images as basic data or to enhance the quality and richness of data manipulation services. Image management has opened a wide area of new research topics in image understanding and analysis. The IFIP 2.6 Working Group on Databases strongly believes that a significant mutual enrichment is possible by confronting ideas, concepts and techniques supporting the work of researcher and practitioners in the two areas of visual interfaces to DBMS and DBMS management of visual data. For this reason, IFIP 2.6 has launched a series of conferences on Visual Database Systems. The first one has been held in Tokyo, 1989. VDB-2 was held in Budapest, 1991. This conference is the third in the series. As the preceding editions, the conference addresses researchers and practitioners active or interested in user interfaces, human-computer communication, knowledge representation and management, image processing and understanding, multimedia database techniques and computer vision.
