Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Intake Aerodynamics, Second Edition" presents computational advancements and discoveries in intake aerodynamics. A companion volume to "Practical Intake Aerodynamic Design," this important text considers the problem of airflow, both internal and external to air intake, as applied to civil and military aircraft. It covers the aerodynamics of subsonic and supersonic intakes in real flows, maintaining a progression through the transonic range. Also considered is the joint perspective of the airframe designer and the propulsion specialist in practical cases. Readers will gain insight into the fluid mechanics behind the deceleration of air from free stream to engine velocity, and an understanding of air compression and external drag in extensively revised chapters reflecting progress in the field. More than 300 drawings and diagrams help to illustrate the points defined throughout the book. Copublished with Blackwell Science Ltd. This book was released on 1956 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Asymmetric air-flow characteristics of supersonic twin-intake air-induction systems were studied with inlets having peak static-pressure recovery at greater than 50-percent mass flow and critical static-pressure recovery equal to or greater than the value at zero mass flow. Analytical predictions of asymmetric flow and initial flow reversal agreed with the experimentally observed trends. Initial flow reversal (i.e., a zero flow in one duct) occurred simultaneously with critical inlet flow in the other duct. Thus, in terms of engine throttling, engine air flow cannot be reduced to less than half the total inlet critical air flow before initial flow reversal occurs.

Book excerpt: Effective operation of airbreathing missiles is strongly dependent on the efficiency of the air intake system and its ability to supply the engine with air of adequate quality at all required flight conditions while minimising any undesirable effects that the intakes may have on the overall aerodynamic characteristics of the missile. This paper describes the role of the intake in the propulsion system of turbojet and ramjet powered missiles and addresses both the internal and external aerodynamic aspects of the induction system. The features of various types of air intake commonly used for subonic and supersonic operation are discussed. The causes and effects of flow instability and flow non-uniformity at engine entry are considered and the operational relationship between the engine intake is shown. Three major aspects of intake installation are discussed: the influence of the missile body flowfield on internal performance; the forces and moments generated by the internal aerodynamic characteristics of the missile.
