Book excerpt: Excerpt from Social Insurance: With Special Reference to American Conditions The neglect of this most important branch of social legis lation by the American economists, Which was very forcibly brought to my attention some ten or twelve years ago, When, as a student in Professor Seligman's seminar, I first became interested in the subject, is fortunately a thing of the past. In all the movements Which I have just mentioned, many university professors of economics and social science are most active, and the list of doctoral dissertations in preparation in the various departments of Economics and Social Science, as recently published, for the first time shows many titles de voted to this fruitful field. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles and Finance of Fire Insurance In the autumn of 1903 I had the honour to deliver a course of ten lectures at the London School of Economics (University of London) on "The Principles, Practice and Finance of Fire Insurance." These lectures were well received, and caused a gratifying amount of interest, not only among those who listened to them, but also among insurance officials outside. I have, therefore, ventured to recast my Lectures in the form of this book, and present the result in the hope that it will be accepted as a serious study in the comparative science of insurance. For many years past I have had opportunities of being in close touch with nearly every branch of insurance business, and it has become a matter of conviction that no one branch can be profitably studied by itself. The great branch of insurance on property known as Fire Insurance is closely akin in many respects to the other great branch of Marine Insurance. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Economic and financial research on insurance markets has undergone dramatic growth since its infancy in the early 1960s. Our main objective in compiling this volume was to achieve a wider dissemination of key papers in this literature. Their significance is highlighted in the introduction, which surveys major areas in insurance economics. While it was not possible to provide comprehensive coverage of insurance economics in this book, these readings provide an essential foundation to those who desire to conduct research and teach in the field. In particular, we hope that this compilation and our introduction will be useful to graduate students and to researchers in economics, finance, and insurance. Our criteria for selecting articles included significance, representativeness, pedagogical value, and our desire to include theoretical and empirical work. While the focus of the applied papers is on property-liability insurance, they illustrate issues, concepts, and methods that are applicable in many areas of insurance. The S. S. Huebner Foundation for Insurance Education at the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School made this book possible by financing publication costs. We are grateful for this assistance and to J. David Cummins, Executive Director of the Foundation, for his efforts and helpful advice on the contents. We also wish to thank all of the authors and editors who provided permission to reprint articles and our respective institutions for technical and financial support.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Development of Insurance Mathematics: Two Lectures Delivered Before the Students in the School of Commerce of the University of Wisconsin, the Fall Term of 1901 It is most interesting to study the growth and evolution of any branch of science and to observe how it Sprang from some other branch of science, and what things had to be known as a prepara tion for the dawning of the new learning. It is a far cry, perhaps, from actuarial science to the decimal system of notation, and yet, had it not been for the invention of that system it may well be doubted whether arithmetic would ever have reached the stage which renders mathematical problems that would otherwise be difficult of operation, simple and easy. Addition, which is now so simple, albeit so laborious a matter, was exceedingly difficult under the old systems of notation. A student may readily form some conception of the difficulties if he will range a number of Roman numerals side by side, or one under the other - one ar rangement is about as convenient as the other - and proceed to add. Multiplication, which is continued addition, was even harder. It follows that Operations which must be performed upon a very large scale, in order that actuaries may do their tasks, were then almost impossible upon anything but a limited scale. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Insurance: Principles and Practices The very kind reception accorded this work has made possible a new edition. In availing ourselves of this opportunity, the method of presentation has remained the same, having amply demonstrated its adaptability for business and teaching purposes. The authors are especially grateful for the statements of appreciation received from the insurance press and members of the insurance profession. A number of the minor errors which seem inevitable in a first edition have been eliminated, some miscalculations have been corrected, and some chapters have been brought up to date, although no work dealing with the ever-changing business of insurance can wholly keep pace therewith. The authors are indebted to Dr. R. H, Blanchard and Messrs. I. Bendiner and H. W. Glover for some criticisms and corrections embodied in this revision. Book excerpt: Insurance Economics brings together the economic analysis of decision making under risk, risk management and demand for insurance among individuals and corporations, objectives pursued and management tools used by insurance companies, the regulation of insurance, and the division of labor between private and social insurance. Appropriate both for advanced undergraduate and graduate students of economics, management, and finance, this text provides the background required to understand current research. Predictions derived from theoretical arguments are not merely stated, but also related to empirical evidence. Throughout the book, conclusions summarize key results, helping readers to check their knowledge and comprehension. Issues discussed include paradoxes in decision making under risk and attempts at their resolution, moral hazard and adverse selection including the possibility of a “death spiral”, and future challenges to both private and social insurance such as globalization and the availability of genetic information. This second edition has been extensively revised. Most importantly, substantial content has been added to represent the evolution of risk-related research. A new chapter, Insurance Demand II: Nontraditional Approaches, provides a timely addition in view of recent developments in risk theory and insurance. Previous discussions of Enterprise Risk Management, long-term care insurance, adverse selection, and moral hazard have all been updated. In an effort to expand the global reach of the text, evidence and research from the U.S. and China have also been added.
