Book excerpt: A matriz econômica primária principal dos assentamentos da região de Porto Alegre é o arroz irrigado, em razão das condições climáticas, topográficas, edáficas e hidrográficas favoráveis. Desde a formação dos assentamentos as famílias buscaram a viabilidade econômica reproduzindo o modelo de orizicultura convencional que existia na região, mas isso tem gerado efeitos negativos à economia, à saúde e ao ambiente dos assentamentos e do entorno. Surgiu assim a necessidade de buscar novas formas de produzir o arroz de forma sustentável. Este trabalho tem como objetivo fazer um estudo da utilização de insumos orgânicos utilizados no manejo da fertilidade na produção de arroz orgânico no assentamento Capela em Nova Santa Rita - RS. Para realização deste trabalho, foram feitas análises do solo de uma unidade de produção de arroz orgânico, análises químicas do esterco de suínos e do biofertilizante produzido pelos agricultores nas proporções 100% e 5%. Com base nas análises cada aplicação de esterco de suínos aporta 22 kg de N por hectare. Em relação ao fósforo o esterco de suíno utilizado apresenta cerca 20 kg/ha, porém deve-se considerar também a absorção por via biológica e pela água utilizada para irrigação. O nível de potássio no solo é considerado alto mediante a análise laboratorial da área. Os teores de cálcio, de magnésio trocável e de enxofre extraível são considerados satisfatórios, pois se enquadram na classe "Média" e que a relação entre cálcio e magnésio é 2,4, não sendo recomendado assim nenhum tipo de correção. Sobre os micronutrientes a análise de solo registrou que com exceção do boro que apresentou teor "Médio", todos os outros se enquadraram na classe "Alta". A adubação foliar com o biofertilizante deve ser mais estudada com o objetivo de avaliar sua eficiência e resultados na produção do arroz, visto que do ponto de vista nutricional as análises demonstraram baixos índices de elementos. É imprescindível que os agricultores procurem alternativas para melhorar a fertilidade e consequentemente aumentar a produtividade das lavouras. Neste sentido, algumas técnicas utilizadas em outros cultivos com base em princípios ecológicos podem ser testados como a adubação verde, a interação lavoura-pecuária, o cultivo de macrófitas aquáticas fixadoras de nitrogênio como a Azolla, ou algas como a Chlorellaminutissima, consórcios com espécies animais como peixes e marrecos,e o plantio de variedades menos exigentes em nutrientes e a aplicação de pó-de-rocha podem ser alternativas viáveis.
