Download or read book Roots of Empire written by John T. Wing and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-01-27 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Roots of Empire is the first monograph to connect forest management and state-building in the early modern Spanish global monarchy. The Spanish crown's control over valuable sources of shipbuilding timber in Spain, Latin America, and the Philippines was critical for developing and sustaining its maritime empire. This book examines Spain's forest management policies from the sixteenth century through the middle of the eighteenth century, connecting the global imperial level with local lived experiences in forest communities impacted by this manifestation of expanded state power. As home to the early modern world's most extensive forestry bureaucracy, Spain met serious political, technological, and financial limitations while still managing to address most of its timber needs without upending the social balance.

Book Synopsis Minería y metalurgia antiguas by : Christian Rico
Download or read book Minería y metalurgia antiguas written by Christian Rico and published by Casa de Velázquez. This book was released on 2012 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Download or read book Punic Wars written by H. Devijver and published by Peeters Publishers. This book was released on 1989 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Punic Wars had tremendous consequences for the whole development of the West-European and West-Mediterranean civilization and history. The volume contains the proceedings of a symposium held in Antwerp, that dealt with these protracted conflicts between Rome and Carthage relying not only on historiographic sources but also on archaeological, epigraphical and numismatic evidences. The thirty articles, illustrated by many figures and plans, reflect a manifold approach to the problems involved and constitute a major contribution to the study and a better understanding of these events, of their social and economic background, and of their consequences for the history of the Mediterranean world.

Book Synopsis Il Mediterraneo Occidentale fra XIV ed VII secolo a.C. by : Claudio Giardino
Download or read book Il Mediterraneo Occidentale fra XIV ed VII secolo a.C. written by Claudio Giardino and published by BAR International Series. This book was released on 1995 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Subtitled `mining and metallurgical spheres' this book starts with a geographic survey of known metal producers in the protohistoric West Mediterranean. Then the distribution of different metalwork forms is discussed, ranging from swords to fibulae. Two smaller sections cover protohistoric metallurgical technology and ships and navigation. This survey has the advantage of incorporating absolute dating and archaeometallurgical evidence into the conventional typologically based version. It also stresses the complexity of a commercial system where different forms seem to have moved in very different spheres. Of especial interest will be Giardino's views on the apparent lack of contact between Mycenean and West Med. metallurgical worlds and the existence of an Atlantic/West Med. stylistic `koine'. His suggestion that roving metal workers carried their technological skills round the Mediterranean world but remained stylistically open-minded revives a Childean doctrine of the `divine smith' and is sure to be controversial. Bilingual parallel texts in Italian and good English.
