Book Synopsis Discovering Reality by : Sandra Harding
Download or read book Discovering Reality written by Sandra Harding and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2005-12-30 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are Western epistemology, metaphysics, methodology and the philosophy of science grounded only in men's distinctive understandings of themselves, others, and nature? Does this less than human understanding distort our models of reason and of scientific inquiry? In different ways, the papers in this collection explore the evidence for these increasingly reasonable and intriguing questions. They identify how it is distinctively masculine perspectives on masculine experience which have shaped the most fundamental and formal aspects of systematic thought in philosophy and the natural and social sciences - precisely the aspects of thought believed most gender-neutral. They show how these understandings ground Aristotle's biology and metaphysics; the very definition of the problems of philosophy in Plato, Descartes, Hobbes and Rousseau; the `adversary method' which is the paradigm of philosophic and scientific reasoning; principles of individuation in philosophical ontology and the philosophy of language; individualistic assumptions in psychology; functionalism in sociological and biological theory; evolutionary theory; the methodology of political science; Marxist political economy; and conceptions of `objective inquiry' in the social and natural sciences. These essays also begin to identify for us the distictive aspects of women's experience which can provide the resources needed for the creation of a truly human understanding. Audience: The book will be of interest to those involved in epistemology, and philosophy of the natural and social sciences, as well as feminist scholars in philosophy. The work will also be of value for theorists, methodologists, and feminist scholars in the natural and social sciences.

Book Synopsis Religion and Law in Classical and Christian Rome by : Clifford Ando
Download or read book Religion and Law in Classical and Christian Rome written by Clifford Ando and published by Franz Steiner Verlag. This book was released on 2006 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Law is a particularly fruitful means by which to investigate the relationship between religion and state. It is the mechanism by which the Roman state and its European successors have regulated religion, in the twin actions of constraining religious institutions to particular social spaces and of releasing control over such spaces to those orders. This volume analyses the relationship from the late Republic to the final codification of Roman law in Justinian's Constantinople.

Download or read book Border Lines written by Daniel Boyarin and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2010-11-24 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The historical separation between Judaism and Christianity is often figured as a clearly defined break of a single entity into two separate religions. Following this model, there would have been one religion known as Judaism before the birth of Christ, which then took on a hybrid identity. Even before its subsequent division, certain beliefs and practices of this composite would have been identifiable as Christian or Jewish. In Border Lines, however, Daniel Boyarin makes a striking case for a very different way of thinking about the historical development that is the partition of Judaeo-Christianity. There were no characteristics or features that could be described as uniquely Jewish or Christian in late antiquity, Boyarin argues. Rather, Jesus-following Jews and Jews who did not follow Jesus lived on a cultural map in which beliefs, such as that in a second divine being, and practices, such as keeping kosher or maintaining the Sabbath, were widely and variably distributed. The ultimate distinctions between Judaism and Christianity were imposed from above by "border-makers," heresiologists anxious to construct a discrete identity for Christianity. By defining some beliefs and practices as Christian and others as Jewish or heretical, they moved ideas, behaviors, and people to one side or another of an artificial border—and, Boyarin significantly contends, invented the very notion of religion.
Book Synopsis Epirus Revisited. New Perceptions of Its History and Material Culture by : Chrēstos Staurakos

This book was released on 2020-11-15 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A presentation of the new results in the research about Epirus.00The opening of the borders of Albania in the 1990s stimulated an increased interest in its cultural heritage and led to extensive research, as well as archaeological investigations. These, however, have mainly concentrated within Albania's present-day borders and have lacked broader contextualization. Very recent excavations in Greece, which resulted from the construction of the new Ionia Odos highway, have, however brought to light unexpected and interesting material that changes our image of the monumental topography and the settlements in Epirus. New studies concerning Epirus and its broader connections during the early and later Ottoman periods provide a broader impression of the region and its relationships with the large economic centres of the West, as well as with the spiritual-religious and political centres of the Balkans.

Book excerpt: "The papers collected in this volume shift the focus away from "heretics" and "heresy" to heresiological discourse, by contextualizing the late antique Jewish and Christian groups that produced our extant literature. The contributors to the volume draw from multiple literary corpora and genres, bringing a variety of late antique perspective to explore the discursive construction of the Other.
