Book Synopsis WHEN--Questions for Catholicism by : Michael J. Tkacik
Download or read book WHEN--Questions for Catholicism written by Michael J. Tkacik and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2022-07-01 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jesus calls the church to be a sacrament to the world. Sadly, many women, LGBTQ persons, people of other faiths, and lay persons experience suffering due to certain words and actions of the Catholic Church. At times, the language and practices of the church leave some people feeling as if their voices have been silenced, their roles limited, and their vocations impeded. Some often feel underappreciated and disrespected. This work explores a vision for the future church which faces these challenges and illuminates possible solutions. Every person has gifts given by God for the building up of the church. Through a thorough exploration of biblical and church teachings, alternative views of these issues provide a path to inclusion for all. This book is intended to bring comfort, hope, and healing to those who have been marginalized. It also offers a map for the church as it journeys to be more of what Christ calls it to be. In a manner faithful to the gospel, reforms for the church are considered that open it to what the Spirit might be saying. When is the time for all persons to be valued, welcomed, empowered, and respected? Now.

Download or read book The Clergy Club written by John Crothers and published by ATF Press. This book was released on 2018-11-01 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Clergy Club as the title suggests, looks at the disconnection that exists between the clergy and the laity in the Catholic Church, and the "club" mentality on the part of the Church hierarchy that underpins it. Many examples are cited that reveal an attitude among priests and bishops of elitism and aloofness, as well as the clergy's inability to see the world from the perspective of the laity, even with the best of intentions. Many questions are asked, such as "Where does this "club" attitude come from? How does it express itself? How is it reinforced by Church structures and theology? What was Jesus' approach to both clergy and laity? Why is Pope Francis so vehement in his criticism of clericalism? Some practical initiatives are also suggested as a way of bringing about change in the clerical culture, a change that would help to rid the Church of clericalism, and in the process bring the clergy and laity closer together.
Book Synopsis Doing Ministry in the Igbo Context by : Cajetan E. Ebuziem
Download or read book Doing Ministry in the Igbo Context written by Cajetan E. Ebuziem and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2011 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Doing Ministry in the Igbo Context: Towards an Emerging Model and Method for the Church in Africa arises out of reflection on experience and practice. The volume reflects on the author's own cultural context, religious heritage, and pastoral functioning. In addition, it considers the author's personal experiences in relation to the common experiences of others within the author's cultural and religious traditions and places these experiences and the voices they represent into mutually critical correlation. Thus, commonalities and dissonances in them emerge leading to insights where to go from there in providing ministry to the People of God in the «local church» context and still within the framework of one universal church. This book presents a contextual model of local theology that begins its reflection with the Igbo cultural context. The Igbo or Nigerian or African Church can have a pattern of ministry with a model and a method that are consistent with the peoples' values. To accomplish this goal a local cultural value must be explored and brought into the scene. Since the Igbo society is the heart of Christianity and Catholicism in Africa, the author relies on Igboland as his situational context. The exploration of the indigenous Igbo value of collaboration will be an advantage in ministering to the rest of the African people who have cultural resemblances to Igbos. The African Church has to learn from the Igbo values of umunna bu ike. Umunna is the basic Igbo unit, and possibly the most powerful missionary force in Igboland, and potentially an Igbo gift to the Church in Nigeria and Africa, and even beyond.

Book Synopsis Collaborative Parish Leadership by : William A. Clark
Download or read book Collaborative Parish Leadership written by William A. Clark and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2016-12-27 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These essays explore team-based parish leadership theologically, sociologically, and pastorally in a variety of cultures and circumstances. The result is an extended conversation, both practical and deeply reflective, emerging from the collaboration of theologians, social researchers, organizational development specialists, and pastoral ministers. Collaborative Parish Leadership draws on the experience, strengths, challenges, and insights of the long-term pastoral-academic partnerships out of which it has grown. These include “Project INSPIRE,” a pastoral team-formation project sponsored by Loyola University and the Archdiocese of Chicago and funded by the Lilly Endowment, Inc., as part of its Sustaining Pastoral Excellence initiative. Another partner initiative is the international pastoral minister exchange “Crossing Over,” involving several Catholic dioceses in northwest Germany and based at Ruhr Universität, Bochum. Authors of these essays have also been involved in Emerging Models of Pastoral Leadership, the Congregational Studies Team’s Engaged Scholars fellowship (both also Lilly Endowment funded projects), and other projects. Collaborative Parish Leadership employs practical-theological methods, rooted in pastoral experience and integrated with scholarly reflection. Opening essays deal with the current situation of U.S. parishes, the parish consultancy model of Project INSPIRE, and a case study of several parishes that benefited from the project. The following chapters present comparative case studies of collaborative leadership in various settings: multicultural parishes in different parts of the U.S., parish clusters consolidating into single parishes using very different processes, and parishes in Chicago and Mexico City meeting similar urban challenges. Three authors associated with CrossingOver and its participating dioceses assess the general state of parish reorganization in Germany, and the potential of the unique approach to team leadership taken in the French archdiocese of Poitiers. The final chapters reflect on the theology of parish leadership from pastoral and systematic perspectives, and on the future needs and possibilities of collaborative approaches. Overall, Collaborative Parish Leadership engages and challenges academic and pastoral leaders in diverse social and ecclesial situations, suggests multiple models for cultivating collaboration, builds connections between collaborative action and theological development.
Book Synopsis Liturgical Question Box by : Peter J. Elliott
Download or read book Liturgical Question Box written by Peter J. Elliott and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 2010-08-06 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Should we hold hands during the "Our Father"? Is liturgical dancing OK? Should the priest say "Good morning" at Mass? And what about those water lillies sprouting in our new font? Msgr. Peter Elliott responds to these and many other liturgical questions in a clear and, at times humorous way. He deals with the questions people have about the way Mass and the Sacraments are meant to be celebrated. Based largely on Msgr. Elliott's replies to problems first raised in a question box format in the mission magazine Christ to the World, this book includes not only broad issues but also many questions relating to the fine details that make up Catholic worship. Liturgical Question Box also gives the author of Ceremonies of the Modern Roman Rite the opportunity to explain positions in more detail he took in that book. Because this book is technically accurate and based on experience and pastoral common sense, it is a reliable guide for pastors, seminarians, liturgical committees, servers, etc. - and for perplexed laity who want to know what should be done in celebrating the Liturgy. Its strong spiritual tone and confident approach should appeal to a wider audience and make it a welcome resource for anyone who wants to promote the mystery, splendor and majesty of Catholic worship today.

Book Synopsis T&T Clark Handbook of Sacraments and Sacramentality by : Martha Moore-Keish
Download or read book T&T Clark Handbook of Sacraments and Sacramentality written by Martha Moore-Keish and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2022-12-29 with total page 585 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introducing readers to the contemporary field of sacramental theology, this volume covers the biblical and historical foundations, a survey of the state of the discipline, and a collection of constructive essays representing major themes, practices and approaches to sacraments and sacramentality in the contemporary world. The volume starts with a set of foundational essays that offer broad introduction to the field of sacramental theology from contemporary scholars, analysing a number of historical figures in order to illumine and inform contemporary sacramental theology. The second part of the volume is dedicated to a series of essays on sacramentality, and includes attention to elements of space, time, ritual action, music, and word, all as aspects of what Christians have termed “sacramental” reality. The third set of essays includes attention to each of the seven practices that have most commonly been termed “sacraments” in Christian traditions: baptism; eucharist/Lord's Supper; confirmation; confession, forgiveness and reconciliation; marriage; ordination; and anointing. The final part of this volume features scholars who are working on sacraments in conversation with contemporary academic disciplines: critical race theory, queer theory, comparative theology, and disability studies.
