During the 1990s, 19 million additional jobs were created in this sector, while growth was stagnant in the goods-producing sector. They show that growth in the services industries fueled the post-1995 expansion in the U.S. productivity and assess the role of information technology in transforming and accelerating services productivity. This book traces the American growth resurgence to its sources within individual industries, documents the critical role of IT, and shows how U.S. nvestment in IT has important parallels in other developed countries.In analyzing the experience in the United States, the authors identify four IT-producing industries, 17 IT-using industries, and 23 non-IT industries and show that the IT-producing and IT-using industries play a disproportionate role in the American growth resurgence. These industries account for only about 30 percent of US GDP but contributed half of the acceleration in economic growth. The study finds that differences in the relative importance of IT-producing industries in other G7 countries have contributed to wide disparities in the impact of IT on economic growth. Productivity, Volume 3 will be of special interest to analysts of the "new economy" and its remarkable persistence through periods of boom and recession.

In particular, we investigate whether entrepreneurship and institutions, either independently or in combination in an ecosystem, represent the “missing link” in explaining cross country differences in productivity. To do this, we introduce a new concept: namely National Entrepreneurial Ecosystem that is based on a methodology that combines institutions and human agency into an interdependent system of complementarities. We argue that entrepreneurship operating in particular institutional contexts, perhaps via the National Entrepreneurial Ecosystem, impacts efficiency which measures how effectively given technology and factors of production are actually used. We explore the empirical relevance of these ideas using data from a representative global survey and institutional sources for 46 counties over the period 2002-2011. We find support for the independent impact of institutions as well as for the role of the ecosystem in less developed economies.
