Peut-on utiliser avec profit pour le champ culturel les outils que la sémiotique greimassienne a élaborés pour des domaines propres, littérature, architecture, peinture etc...? Comment aborder de façon scientifique les pratiques culturelles qui parviennent à l'analyste sous des formes très diverses? Il est proposé une organisation cohérente des pratiques culturelles sous la forme d'une typologie fonctionnelle et une méthode systématique d'analyse de ces pratiques, les mêmes modèles pouvant s'appliquer à des pratiques dont les manifestations sont très différentes. Cette théorie est appliquée au champ particulier de l'écriture de l'histoire. Les modalités de l'enseignement de l'histoire, à l'université, comme dans le secondaire et dans le primaire, participent, en effet, à instaurer une culture républicaine normative dans la France des débuts de la IIIe République. Cette période fondatrice de la nation française est ainsi éclairée de façon originale.

Book excerpt: This study examines the evolution of national and regional, cultural and political identities in that northern region of France which borders Belgium, over the two centuries which followed the French Revolution. During that time the region was transformed by the development of the industrial economy, population shifts, war and occupation, and numerous changes of political regime. Through an analysis of a wide range of issues, including language, regional and national political movements, educational policy, attitudes towards immigrants and the border, the press, trade unions, and the church - as well as the attitude of the French State - the author questions traditional interpretations of the process of national assimilation in France. At the same time he illustrates how the Franco-Belgian border, originally an arbitrary line through a culturally homogeneous region, became not only a significant marker for the identity of the French Flemish, but a real cultural division. Dana Kristofor Lindaman provides the historical context that led to the explosion of geographic interest at the end of the nineteenth century, exploring the ways that the work of the geographers Paul Vidal de la Blache and Élisée Reclus served as a conceptual basis for abstract notions of the nation such as la Patrie. Lindaman then uses Reclus's formulation of the earth as "une organisme terrestre" (terrestrial organism) to read Jules Verne's Voyage au centre de la terre (Journey to the Center of the Earth) as a journey to the center of the individual self. Finally, he traces the geographic narrative of G. Bruno's Tour de la France par deux enfants, in particular the way that Bruno's work incorporates the geographic thought of Vidal de la Blache, to discover the organic ties that bind readers through the shared experience of reading the text.

Book excerpt: By exploring how children and their families became unprecedented objects of governmental policy in the early decades of France's Third Republic, Sylvia Schafer offers a fresh perspective on the self-fashioning of a new governmental order. In the aftermath of the Franco-Prussian War, social reformers claimed that children were increasingly the victims of their parents' immorality. Schafer examines how government officials codified these claims in the period between 1871 and 1914 and made the moral status of the family the focus of new kinds of legislative, juridical, and administrative action. Although the debate on moral danger in the family helped to articulate the young republic's claim to moral authority in the metaphors of parenthood, the definition of "moral endangerment" remained ambiguous. Schafer shows how public authorities reshaped their agenda and varied their remedies as their schemes for protecting morally endangered children broke down under the enduring weight of this ambiguity. Drawing on insights from feminist theory, literary studies, and the work of Michel Foucault, Schafer reveals the cultural complexity of civil justice and social administration in both their formal and everyday incarnations. In demonstrating the centrality of ambivalence as a condition of liberal government and governmental representations, she fundamentally recasts the history of the early Third Republic and, more widely, issues a powerful challenge to conventional views of the modern state and its history. Book excerpt: Rituals are closely linked with culture. This book is a consideration of Christian ritual in our culture. It was originally written particularly with an eye to the ritual developments in The Netherlands, which can be considered as representative for our Western European culture. It has been revised and expanded for the English edition. As in other European countries, in the 1960s Dutch society witnessed a serious crisis in ritual. The situation was paradoxical. While, under the influence of the Second Vatican Council and the Liturgical Movement, in the Catholic churches there was a great creativity with regard to ritual, ritual was gradually disappearing from the society at large, and participation in Christian ritual was rapidly draining away. A religious void arose. However, since then the situation has changed fundamentally. Rituals were rediscovered in the 1990s, indeed to such an extent that one can now speak of 'rituals in abundance'. In this book the author sketches out the directions and sets out signposts for where ritual is going in contemporary culture. He traces the peculiar characteristics of ritual, indicates what shifts have taken place, and tries to further define the identity of various rituals. In doing this, he concentrates on the question of the place of Christian ritual in our culture. How is Christian ritual connected with the many rites in our culture? What new shape is it taking on in our culture? In the midst of the other rites, what is the peculiar identity of Christian ritual? In this book the accent is on the anthropological approach to Christian ritual: it works from the bottom up. The book seeks answers to the questions being asked in the discipline of ritual studies, which particularly since the second half of the 1980s has arisen as an important realm or stage on which different disciplines studying ritual come together.
